Single slot coin door setup.
« on: November 17, 2021, 09:08:28 am »
Im in the process of setting up my front end and hardware on a cab Im building.I bought a single slot coin door, based solely on saving a bit of cash. Now Im setting up my controls and am wanting to clear up a couple of things before I work my way thru my game list.

Firstly, when setting up MAME controls,I set my 1player and 2 player start buttons in the general input settings.
This is good for 2 player alternate games.
Then for coin 1 i insert a coin,is it necessary to do this for coin 2 also? Or is the coin 1 slot good for both players.

Secondly, when setting up games which allow 2 players simultaneously:
When I tab into MAME,and select controls for each individual machine,is just disabling the player 2 start button enough?

Im pretty sure Im doing it correct, just want to make sure.

Depends on the game. MOST classic games, the coin slots are interchangeable. The credit is just applied to an overall number. So, just a single coin clot is fine and you don't need to wire or fake a second coin slot.

SOME games expect the slot differently. For example, the 4 player Konami games would have you pick which player you were by coining up with a specific slot. (you might be able to control this in dip switching settings though if memory serves).

I can't think of any single player or alternating play games that require a setup like that though.

Thanks for the pointers mate.

I know Im on the right track, but just wanted to find out about this part a bit better.

Ive already noticed a slight difference in one  games method. Its either 1945 or 19xx if you insert 2 credits then press 2 players, your only playing as player 2,the player 1 button also has to be pressed for both sides to play. Not relevant to my build i know, but got me wondering if there were any unknowns Im unaware of in other games i should look out for.

The good news is that some of the 2P versions of 4P games like The Simpsons (simpsons2p) allow you to pool credits.

The not-so-good news is that 2P Gauntlet (gauntlet2p) still assigns credits according to the coin slot so you'll either need to map both P1 and P2 coin to the one coin slot or use a shifted function for P2 Coin.

just to add / reiterate.

Many games have a universal credit setup even if they detect multiple coin mechs it's usually for book keeping.

some of the 4p games as mentioned have independent coinmechs however I think "most" will have dip or service menu settings for single coinmech option.

nothing worse than having a 2 player game.. only 1 coin mech and it goes down and then no one can play the game till the tech repairs it.

My advise is wire it to coin 1 (input) most games will be happy with this.

any game that gives you issue, check dip settings, check service menu options for coin settings

the few games you might come a cross with a problem,  i'd recommend just setting to free play or (in mame) set the input (for that game) for coin1 & 2 as the same input, not ideal but honestly I think the number of situations you'll run into issues is extremely small.

Im going to use a single in one of my projects as well, it gets the effect and nearly half the cost of a double.
