The Q*Beret - Multi-Q*Bert Tully Caberet
« on: October 02, 2016, 04:37:08 pm »

A few years ago, I built a Tully - style cabaret jukebox for my buddy Jawhn. Flash Forward to this summer, when I got the cabinet back in a trade. Since I already had already wall - mounted jukebox, I decided to use this cab along with a 14" arcade monitor and one of the many PCBs I had to make a dedicated mini. I had a few choices, but in the end I went with the one game I've always wanted  - Q*bert. I have a Jrok JAMMA Mylstar PCB that has all flavors of Q*Bert on it, but it was in need of all cab to call home. This cab would be perfect for that!

So here is the evolution...

Here's what I started with...

Took out the internals. You can see the monitor waiting patiently in the background...

On the Juke,  the speakers were on the control panel. That wouldn't do for the game, so I took an idea I saw on the Battlezone cabaret and put the speaker below the coin door. I used a Midway 6x9 grille for the speaker, worked great....

From the other side. How clean!

Monitor tested with the board. I had to recap it and change out some extra caps, but it was syncing with the board...

Wiring and PCB setup. I've gotten good at avoiding rat's nests when it comes to wiring. Molex harnesses FTW.

Monitor mounted. I used a combo of MDF and aluminum angle pieces...

Artwork fitted. You can see my new marquee. I'm going to sandwich it between pieces of bronze and clear plexi..

Got a knocker. The PCB supports it, so if I'm going to do it, I got to be real...

Here's the knocker in action!

Bezel cut, drilled, and fitted...

Monitor shroud installed. Looks factory now...

Coin door refinished and installed. Put in to place. Ladies and gents, The Q*Beret!

LT would have really loved it.  It's almost time to expand the game room!

A moment of silence for my homie Louis Tully.

...

My plan is to move the Megatouch out and put the Q*Beret there. Of course, my wife thinks it's going to my work to join the Super Pac cocktail. It is for a few weeks, but it will be back.... oh yes, it will be back.

Anyone in the Phoenix area who wants a Megatouch XL running the Titanium 2 Hard Drive, let me know....

BTW, the shape and size is great for a vertical single player game. It would NOT make sense to try and make it a two-player game cab. Trust me on this one.

I've never even seen a Megatouch, but I hear about them all the time.  What is it, a trivia bar machine or something?

Yes, one of the old ones you see on the corner of the bar. Got a lot of fun touch screen games, a lot of card ones, some skill games, Photo Hunt things, even some adult themed ones if you turn those on.

Thanks, brother!

To be honest, I used an old joystick I had lying around that probably came to me from a project I did a restoration on. I went with it because it looked most like an original Q*Bert joystick. It's an 8-way, but it works well. I installed it at 45 degrees (although the Jrok board allows you to use system settings to "rotate" a standard joystick install if need be). Since it's only playing Q*Bert and it's variants, I decided to do the install the right way.

Great work as usual Yots. And looking good in your Arcade.

Q*bert looks really good as a cabaret. Really happy to see you do a Q*bert.

Q*bert is such a great game and a blast to play when you get good at it. Enjoy it!

Yeah, designing it that way was a no brainer. It got a little hairy with space since a 45 degree rotated joystick takes up more space, but it all worked out ok in the end.

I got lucky, I pulled it from a gutted, rain-soaked Missile Command cocktail. I've been saving it for something, and it worked perfectly. One of my original plans was to make it a MAME based Star Trek SOS Cabaret, so I have a 15 inch PC CRT that I could throw into it as well. But ultimately, I decided upon going with the original arcade monitor. This Cabaret also almost became a dedicated Arkanoid, but my boards would not sync up with the monitor. So I'm glad I went with my original plan.

Heh. I wish I had a sexy awesome story on how I digitized an existing one I had myself, but truth be told, someone on KLOV created a copy of one and uploaded it, so all I did was download it. I was going to use it as a template, but I just printed it out on a 24" x 24" sheet of poster paper. I did use Photoshop to paint it black for the print since it's just the outlinr. Nice thing is that the poster paper is thicker and sturdier than regular paper. And it fit the monitor perfectly.

That's pretty slick.

Yeah, initially I was just going to print it out, cut it out, and trace it on the piece of black construction paper, but somewhere along the line, I got smart. :-)

You want photos of me painting the heads of the screws black, too?

Give me pics of painted screw heads mother scratcher!

Us n00bs need a good guide on that. >:D
I'll get on that as soon as I'm done with my Raspberry Pi tutorial.

Very nice. I had been following the other thread where you posted bits and pieces but hadn't realised you'd finished it.

Loving cabarets at the moment. I keep looking around the house thinking "Hmmm. I could definitely squeeze one in there...!". Q-Bert or Frogger would be my choices.

A slippery road I tells ya.  ;D

Try one, markc74! Easy to build, fun to design, and still looks arcade-y!

Love the build! I really like the Tully cabarets and Q Bert is great. How are you liking the jrok board? I wish I had more room to do a Q Bert bartop.

I love the Jrok board. Jrok himself will be at the repair party in November, BTW!

Seriously? Arcade celebrity in Phoenix! I want to get either a Taito or the Berserk board, but I haven't decided which one.
