Having an issue with the bottom corner of the display after installing it into cab.its a 21 inch dell crt pc vga monitor.I included some pics,but basically,the bottom right corner doesnt display the colors properly.a degauss will sometimes fix it temporarily.it went through alot of vibration while installing,and worked perfectly before that.any ideas how to fix this?

Looks like a degaussing issue. Try moving it to another part of the room or rotating it 90 or 180 degrees and see if it goes away. Sometimes you just have an orientation or spot in the game room where a monitor doesn't like it. Are you hitting it with a good degaussing wand?

I only tried the built in degauss feature the monitor has,I dont have a wand to try,yet anyways.Ill try moving the cab,maybe the monitor doesnt like hanging like that,weird.Im thinkin all the vibration from screwing it in while installing messed something up.

It's not the vibration, it's the magnetic fields. Keep monitors and magnets away from each other.

The speakers are shielded so i dont think thats the issue.can magnets cause permanent damage to the monitor? Now that i think about it,while i had it on the bench to decase it,it was beside my magnet dish tray,and that thing has strong magnets on it.

Ding ding ding!!!

It will probably fade away on its own after having it powered on and off for quite some time.

Just run it as normal, and it should eventually fade away on its own.

worst case scenario is the monitor frame itself has become magnetized. try and see if a magnetic metal paperclip will stick to the metal in that corner. if it does, it's become magnetized and you'll have to demagnetize it. This usually involves taking another magnet and using the opposite magnetic field to destroy the one stored in the metal.

Lol sarver ,did I win a prize? Lilshawn ,I believe you are right,metal is not only attracted to that corner,its attractrd all the way around it.do I have to demagnetize it,or will it discharge by itrself over time as stated by sarver.

it probably won't by itself. the frame tends to hold it like a dirty shirt. usually it's because the degauss coil has been attached too close to the frame causing it to build up a magnetic charge over time.

you have 2 options, the magnet one i mentioned before...or...

it's a pain in the ass.... but, if you are feeling brave, you can remove the frame from the tube (it just has one bolt in each corner.) and heat the entire frame with a propane torch or over a fire. It doesn't have to be red hot or anything. but heating the metal and allowing it to cool will scramble the molecules of the metal enough to remove the magnetic field stored in it. You don't want to go so crazy hot that you change the metal after it cools so it ends up being brittle.

if you do this, make sure you locate the degauss coil away from the frame and keep it on the tube. nylon tie wraps work wonders for this.

i ended up having to heat a K7400 frame that had become magnetized. the monitor could be manually degaussed, but the degauss coil on the tube would screw it back up again the next time it was powered on.

ALWAYS handle a CRT with care.
the shadow mask can be distorted by physical impact .

the result may be a "discolored" area that can be extremely difficult to nullify .
pending severity, carefully placed magnets can compensate. use low gauss type.

avoid placing on dag coating as degaussing will nullify effect.

once had a TV come in for service with a nice rainbow in the pic.
owner had managed the dislodge the shadow mask.
could hear it banging around as the set was moved

Yep, sounds like magnetized frame to me too.

That said, if you're going to get a degaussing wand, I would recommend this degaussing COIL from Fry's Electronics. It works really well, and may actually be able to resolve your issue. Even if it doesn't, this is a great thing to have in your toolkit.

Just make sure if you're degaussing a monitor in a cabinet that's next to other cabinets, only have the cabinet you are degaussing powered on, leave the others off. Otherwise you'll end up screwing up the other monitors in the process!
