Building a Arcade with 2 Wireless Controller
« on: July 12, 2013, 08:36:10 am »
Hi everyone,

I am new to this, Im trying to build a Box with 2 individual wirelless controllers. So we are able to play from the Sofa with my nephew  ;)

The easiest way would be to hook up a cable with an keyboard encoder ala "iPAC" or similar, but would really really prefer the Wireless option.

Ive read people hacking PS2 PS3 controllers and most popular XBOX 360 Wireless Controller in order to achieve this.
But I couldnt find anything on hacking a Wireless Keyboard be it Bluetooth or RF.  ???

Would love to hear from your guys experience.
I can get 2 Logitech K360 for really cheap and try it out, because 2 xbox wireless on ebay are about 50-60$ + the usb receiver.

Ive read that usually the problems with keyboards is that you cant press more than 6 buttons at once?
I cant think of a game that requieres that much? (maybe streetfighter or similar?)
Is it even possible to press that much buttons at once? Or is it something else?

Will use it mostly for the Popular Arcade Games ( Ghost n Goblins, Bubble Booble, 1942, Wonderboy, Metal Slug, Star Wars Trilogy) Not very much into fighting games...

the conclusion that I have found around the internet is that the only "workable" option would be to disect a Xbox 360 controller solder the cables and use it with a Usb Receiver...

Is there really no alternativeout there?  (Wireless Keyboard Encoder?) or can somebody tell me why is it that difficult...?

Thanks for your time!

You don't need a keyboard encoder. I use the ps3 controller with my mac wirelessly via bluetooth. You can use specific apps to translate the controls to specific key presses. On the mac, I use joystick mapper available in the mac app store. I'm sure there is a winblows and linux alternative too.

Hi again,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, but Im actually building 2 Arcade sticks from scratch like this one: http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/example2.html

So my question was how to create a wireless stick dissasembling a PS3 or X360 controller or finding a different solution like disassembling and hacking a Bluetooth / RF Keyboard

Here is a Video showing a guy who hacked a XBOX 360 controler into a Arcade stick

I would like to do something similar but using a Wireless Keyboard (which I think would be much cheaper than 2 Xbox controller + usb receiver)
if anyone here in the forum had some experience and willing to share if should go this route or the other i would really appreciate

Thanks in advance!

Regards.

I don't know what you expect for an answer. Do exactly what is explained in the video, but with a bluetooth ps3 controller or bluetooth wireless keyboard. Personally, I'd get a ps3 controller so you can charge via usb cable. You can get official ps3 wireless controllers for $25, used for even less. Stop being a cheap ass.

Keilmillerjr please tell me you are a troll, and not actually that dense.  This is a forum for building real arcade controls.  The op wants a wireless encoder of some sort that can be wired to real arcade controls.

To the op, unfortunately there are no canned solutions that I know of. I you want to minimize soldering, maybe look into a wireless fight stick for the PS3 or 360?

@AGarv I'm not a ---smurfing--- troll. I know what the ---fudgesicle--- he wants.

@pushover Here is a more detailed video on how to do this with a ps3 controller.

The question that needs to be asked here is why would you want to build an arcade cabinet that you could play from the couch?

Hi everyone,

@keilmillerjr: Maybe it sounded that way but Im not trying to be a cheap ass on this, English is not my first language and Im trying my best.  ;)

Just to keep it simple....After searching through google and other Arcade Forums, I came to conclusion that :

1. No Wireless Encoder on the market like iPAC or similar.
2. People uses Real Game controllers (PS3/Xbox) to dissasemble their boards to fit into their arcade sticks in order to make them wireless.

My question is: if there are people hacking Wired Keyboards for their sticks (instead of buying an iPAC which would be the same), How is it that nobody has tried a hack on Wireless Keyboard (Bluetooth/RF)?

Im more interested in the TECHNICAL ASPECTS of that matter rather than the budget. I want to know if someone here has tried it out, so someone tells me "Hey man, youre barking up the wrong tree, forget about hacking a Wirelless Keyboard because..." or "Hey I did it but dont use  xyz Keyboards or other brands..." "Use Bluetooth instead of RF beacause of some limitations....." dont know, something like that

Just need some insider info before I start buying parts.

Greetings and thanks for everyone!.

@yotsuya : Because I dont have the space to build a real size Arcade Maschine in my Apartment, so I build something smaller that I can store somewhere when its not used, so my wife dont kicks both of us out of the House ;)

You're doing great -- never would have guessed if you hadn't mentioned it.

Most of the wired keyboard hacks you see around here were done years ago.

As you mentioned in the OP, one problem with them is the USB limitation on the number of keys you can press at one time -- details here.

Other problems with matrix encoders (used in keyboards) include "ghosting" and "blocking" -- details here.
