Sony Wega 24" decasing and install into arcade cab questions
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:20:55 pm »
Hey guys I have picked up one of these:

I tested it last night and it works.  I have taken the back plastic off, and have attached aligator clip leads to a flat blade screw driver and the other side to the metal edge of the tv and pushed up under the anode cap, and nothing happened.

Like this:

I popped it out, and made sure to tapp it repeatedly against the metal edge of the monitor just to be sure the flyback was discharged.

It now looks like this:

And i hope it is discharged.  Anyone know if this tv has an automatic discharge as a safety feature or something because it didn't seem to discharge or make a noise or anything when i was trying to discharge it.

Also, as far as mounting it in my cab, I need to know if you guys suggest i remove the tube from the motherboard, mark all the wiring, or just decase it and get 3 people to help carefully bring the components still attached into the cab.

Also can anyone suggest some good mounting brackets to make out of wood? I am kind of unsure how to mount this and have never mounted a crt before....

actually it's the tube and not the flyback that holds the juice kind of like a balloon holds air.
I've gotten shocked after discharging while picking up the tube and touching the anode connection.

to be safe it's a good idea to discharge more than once.

I would try and disconnect the tube from the board.

LOL no joke I just picked up a 24" sony just like this for 30 bucks. I already cut 2 slabs of MDF and routed out the inside. Slipped the TV in and bolted it down. Right now i am making a mount for the PCB. I kept mine kind of simple since I don't have any tools. There are a ton of pictures around here on mounting CRTs. I'm not sure about disconnecting the PCB or not. I didn't want to mess anything up so I kept it all together. Kind of a pain doing it by myself.

lay the cab on it's side and you should be able to get the monitor in without too much fuss.  I had to lay my cab down when I mounted a 27" monitor in my NBA jam cab.  Picking up the cab after adding 85-115 lbs is the kicker.

Hey I saw that you tested it, was this just TV/video console, or did you actually hook it up to a PC?

by tested it i should clarify i didn't actually try the component outs. Ooops! :dunno  I hope this doesn't come back to bite me in the end.  I picked up the tv from a guy who when i arrived it was on and the cable tv was on.  It looked bright but he had no remote for the tv.  Luckily I bought a 37" before this, and it has a sony remote.  I think i can use that remote on this tv. I need to do more research.

Either way today I removed the yoke from the tv and marked off all the wires and removed them as well.  The tube is seperated from the rest of the electronics and marked up so I can get it all back together.

I have the same TV in my cab, had to build a custom frame for it to mount it. The only issue ive been having lately, is that it wont retain geometry settings. I'll go fiddle with them, i hit mute to save them to ram, then restart the tv, all is well, until i unplug the thing...

Hey I saw your build after searching, dude that frame you built was top notch.  I wish I had the ability and resources to build something similar.  This is my first time really working with wood and what-not so I am going slow to make sure I get things right.  I need to figure out what angle to mount the tv at. Also I saw in the links mentioned above people have successfully mounted this 90 lbs monster with small wood and it held strong.

Ill post the pics of my mount setup later tonight. I played around with the xbox360 and PC the xbox I can run component but set to TV not HDTV since its only 480i. I cant get my PC to recognize it.

elkameleon mentioned to me that using older drivers (video card) allowed 480i output better. I'm going to play with some options an see what works best.

I already bought a VGA switch box so I would like to try to utilize that (with a VGA to Composite.component) instead of switching the video every time. although making an extended button for the TV wont be a problem.

Just showing how I mounted the same TV. Basically 2 slabs of 3/4" MDF routed out for the TV slot. Mounted to the cab with L mounts. The PCB board was mounted to another mdf board I glued to the tv mount. Then just hot glued the PCB to that.

I found the following in the last paragraph on this page: http://www.epanorama.net/faq/vga2rgb/interfacing.html

VGA card and no monitor

Sometimes there is need to boot-up a computer without monitor attached. Most computer systems work nicely without monitor, but some system for soem reason might not boot up properly without the monitor. For example some systems with TV outputs still need you to have the monitor attached when you boot up the system, for the TV output to start workign properly.

VGA monitor "emulation" circuit can be built by connecting VGA connector pin 11 to pin 5 with piece of wire. In this way the VGA card gets color monitor ID from this special adapter and you can boot your computer to color monitor mode when there is no real VGA monitor attached. I have had quite good experience in using this circuit, but it is possible that this simple trick does not work with every system.

I thought this might be useful if using s-video output. I'm not even sure if this applies to your setup.

I initially had to use the dual monitor setup to get it working, but after you get the right settings, you can switch your "main" monitor to the tv and disconnect the vga monitor.

I didn't even think about that. Thanks for sharing!

Hey guys thanks for the help I mounted the TV today!

Took tons of measurements.

Turns out I couldn't have picked a better monitor to use because the clearance of the neck board is within 2 centimeters from the back door...

See pics below.

I used the mount from the old tv since after measuring the cabinet, it is not perfectly square.  This made me feel a tad bit uncomfortable because this is a decision that will be the first time I change something on this cabinet that is irreversible.  But after thinking it through I said it was for the best and went with for it.

Grabbed the measurements, checked 3 times, and spaced everything best I could.  I thought about changing the angle that the tv sits, but quickly realized if I tilted the monutor more "vertically" the neckboard would petrude thru the back.  My dad said i could cut a hole in the back door and use a siding piece at homedepot, he'd seen it done before... I was seriously thinking of trying that for a moment.  But then I realized there was probably a reason the monitor was built to sit recessed and tilted somewhat flatter like it does in the final pictures. So i went with it.  It worked for the best...

I cut out the frame to fit the tv, and I had to sand a bit more for a snug fit with a rasp. But it came out great.  To reinforce the weight of the tv my dad suggested to use some angle brackets as reverse washers, in other words we would take a long countersunk bolt, put it down through an angle bracket and through the wood and into the metal edge of the frame of the tube.  Behind that would be a lockwasher and a nut.  2 of these each for each of the four corners.  Since the Sony tv already had 3 holes in the vorner brackets I used the spacing and just went through it with a 3/16 drill bit to give a bit more clearance.  I am very pleased with the results.

I have the same TV in my pole position project. I ran the wire that went to the left speaker to the original speaker up top and it sounds amazing, I almost wish I had the front speaker to do the same with.

If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.
