Resolution 640 x 480 = screens flickering
« on: January 11, 2012, 02:24:31 am »
Hi all,

Hoping someone can help.

Under Mala I'm running it at 640 x 480 on a Arcade Screen (15 Khz) using soft 15Khz. At this resolution there is screen flicker (only way I can describe it). I read some where that this is a interlace resolution and will cause this symptom. I changed it to 312 x 240 and the flicker stopped, but I could only see part of the screen, as the image was way to large!!

Games don't seem to do it, just the front end.

Anyone got a fix??

Thanks in advance

Correct on the interlace.  In order to display that high of a resolution, the monitor will go to interlaced mode.  I use GameEx on my front end and there is an option to set the resolution which I have at 640x288.  I would imagine this could be done by changing the Mala layout.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I tried that....no success  :'(

On closer inspection, the games do show some flickering (all though not noticeable behind a dark tinted screen).

If I remember correctly (from ages ago), the developer of soft 15Khz said it couldn't be fixed when I asked about it.

I don't believe soft 15Khz has any display setting options, and the video card (Radeon 9600) can only go down to 640X480

How do you play your games at a lower resolution???

Thanks again for trying

Use catalyst 6.5 for the video card driver and quickres to set low resolutions. Then use this tool to create your ini files: http://www.ultimarc.com/avres.zip.

Sorry I can't give better details, but it's been a couple months since I did it and don't remember exactly how I did it. I do remember that I needed to figure out valid resolutions for my setup and then edit the avres config file to set only those that work.

Hi.

What does Catalyst 6.5 do?

how is that different to the one I'm running?

Have used Avres before, but with no luck.

Cheers..

Funny, just ran into a similar issue but at all resolutions.  My fix was to remove the ATI driver and install again clean.  Probleme solved.  Go figure the luck of that one.
