Partial Updates?
« on: November 21, 2011, 01:12:30 pm »
In MAME when you press F11 and the speed is displayed, what are the partial updates telling you? Most of the games ruperfectly well at full speed and they display as something like 224 partial updates, but some ames show 100% and a lower amount of partial updates and they are choppy. Is there a setting to fix this? I know there are a few it is doing this with, but the only one I can think of right now is Double Dragon III. I am using MAMEUI64 version .144.

It has to do with frameskipping.  A "partial update" is exactly what it sounds like -- any time only part of the frame is updated.  The games you mention having fewer partial updates appear to run slowly because Mame is rendering more frames in their entirety.  Play around with your frameskipping settings.

the only one I can think of right now is Double Dragon III.

The best solution here is to simply never play that game.  Ever.

Haha... Yeah it is a pretty horrible game. I don't understand why the graphics are worse on double dragon 3 than on the original.

DDIII was in the period of 'cartoonimation' graphics and teenager's voices for men characters.....that apparently the teens of the day identified with.

Oh, wait. They do the same thing now in Justice League. I just rub the "SPAAAAACE GHOOOOOOOSST" lamp to banish all that glelth away.
