Cabinet Button Question
« on: May 15, 2010, 01:05:37 pm »
Are there any games out there that use more than 6 buttons?  I'm sure there are, but I'm working on my CP and I'm trying to decide how to place all my buttons.  I have 19 buttons to work with.  Right now, I'm planning 6 player buttons, coin, and start for each player = 16 buttons so far.  Then and Esc, Pause, and a Shift for Admin buttons.
Back to the original question, what games use more than those 6 buttons?  This is kind of a cost vs. reward type decision.

No arcade games really use more than 6 buttons. If you're playing console games then you might be happy to have an extra button but generally games that require more than 6 buttons to play dont suit arcade controls.

A lot of people but a seventh button down and to the left of the 6 buttons (assuming a street fighter layout) so that they can have the 4 bottom buttons for NEO-GEO games. Also mortal kombat 3 and 4 had the 'run' button in this position. So if you have spare buttons, enough space and dont mind a little extra button configuring in MAME you might consider using a 7 button layout.

how do you tell mame that the 7th button is NEOGEO's 1st button?  and still keep all the others in a 6 button configuration??

If I could figure this out then I would put in a 7th button!

Also how do you use GameEx's CPViewer to fix it so thatit tells you the panel configs for NeoGeo Games.

Apart from changing the config for each game manually im not sure. You could use a different emulator for your neo-geo games, like FinalBurn Alpha, and map the controls in that to use the 4 buttons. I use this emulator as it runs neo-geo and cps2 games better than MAME on my verry old pc :). I also use the front-end AtomicFE which allows you to have games from different emulators in one screen, and so i can still have all my arcade games in the one screen. If there is no way to change all your neo-geo configurations in mame in one go you might consider that option :)

If using windows, go to start, run, type "command" without the quotes, hit enter.

In the "dos" window that pops up, go to your mame directory and type "mame -cc" without the quotes.  That creates your mame.ini file.
