I recently picked up a Donkey Kong 3 cab from someone moving in the area. It looks as if it was originally a donkey kong converted to DK3.  The monitor as I can tell is a sanyo 20EZ from the pics I've encounter online as well as other resources. The game plays fine with the exception that the brightness on the monitor is ultra dim, to the point where you can just see it if all the lights are off. I've attempted adjusting the brightness as well as the tint controls for the colors to no avail. Couldn't seem to find another post talking about a very dim tube so I'm wondering if a cap kit would work? I've read a little about rejuvenation and if that'd work, should I replace the monitor or something else? I've taken pictures of the screen, note that these pics are taken at a very long exposure (almost 2 seconds) in order to see the screen. The picture was taken with no lights on in the room other than the marquee light, which is overexposed in the second picture. It is very very faint.  Hopefully it is repairable and I can order parts tomorrow.

Thanks ahead of time!

Cap it.  Get a kit that includes ALL caps, including the main filter cap.  They've been going a lot now, and it's recommended that these are replaced too.

Yeah, try a cap kit.  (Rejuvenation as a last resort would likely be the consensus here.)  You said you tried the brightness and tint.  So you mean the "Screen" adjustment on the flyback, right?  If you only tried the brightness and contrast controls then try the Screen adjustment located on the flyback (I think this is what you are referring to, but figured I'd mention it.)

I just had a very dim and slightly washed-out WG K7000 series and a cap kit didn't do much, but then I rejuvenated the tube and got a lot better results from the Red and Green guns but my Blue is still crappy and now, although the entire screen is brighter and better as far as focus goes, it has a yellowish tint because the Blue gun didn't improve.  ARGH!  Lol!

I hadn't realized there was more adjustments on the flyback till I tore apart the board and recapped it. My Flyback is looking a bit crusty/burnt, I'm considering replacing it if the monitor is still dim. Going to have me a smoke test tonight to see if the caps did the trick.

The stuff around the middle is normal, but there is one spot I'm concerned with.  It's hard to make out because it's fuzzy.

Here's more pics. I pulled out the DSLR and used a macro lens.

Good! I was a bit worried. Thanks SirPeale!  I'll post my results tonight when I get the monitor back together!

If you've never tried the "SCREEN" adjustment on the flyback, that is something that really might help you.  And the focus you'll want to tweak, too.  Good luck!

  • I break stuff...then fix it...sometimes
what you'll want to do is turn up the screen...but not too much, you don't want your black to go gray. if it goes gray(grey) and your colors are not sufficiently bright enough yet, you can try and turn up the drive for the colors. failing that, if it still isnt bright enough you can either:

junk it and put another (donor) tube in.

try to rejuvenate the tube.

She works like a champ now, no real adjustments needed just the cap kit and a bit of TLC.
:applaud: Thanks everyone for the advice and help!
