People Finder
« on: June 06, 2003, 04:03:39 pm »
I noticed the people finder link at the top of this page for the first time today.  It seems like a great idea.  Let everyone know where you are and what you are all about.  The fact that Michigan is the most populated state (according to the finder) is great ;)  I didn't realize that Oscar Controls was based just a county over.

At any rate, I also noticed that there are very few members, and it seems to be not so updated.  I was just wondering if there would be any interest if a similar project were to take off.  I am a seasoned web programmer and would be willing to put together a set of scripts to handle it.  Users could sign up and add themselves to the proper state/county/country/etc.  They would also be able to update any information (maybe some stuff on cabs).  I don't know, this could go anywhere.

I'm just taking a survey of interest before I put in any time on decided what to do.

Let me know what ya'll think!

I actually was going to do the same thing... but never got around to it...

I wanted to have it tie in to the message board so that people could just  use the existing "location" field...  but, I got more than sidetracked =P

I for one, would think it was wicked cool... please go for it!

If the people here at BYOAC are willing to allow me to check out how the YaBB SE database (text or mySQL) is set up, I'd be happy to tie it in with the forums.  That sounds like a great idea.  The location field probably isn't entirely enough (since people put in whatever they want), but using the same user database would work out well.

I used to be a part of the team over at YaBB "back in the day" but haven't touched YaBB SE.  I'm not entirely sure who to contact about something like this since I'm still a semi-newbie.

Well what I was gonna do is setup my own yapbbse the same revision as this to see the user table(s) structure and work off that... I was hoping to create some sort of "plugin" that would be able to write to that field in a format that I could later parse to search/display that data.

Then I could give the "plugin" and give it to pj, have him change the username/password for the database to match the config (or pull it in from yapbbse automagically)  and we'd just need to let people to know to go to a certain special page to update their location field (and maybe ask that saint/pj lock that field as read only from the regular user profile page ... or something)

That was my thought process, but I never got passed asking which version of yapbbse they were currently using and bothering to install it on my server for research/testing.

*shrug*  That was just my hack-ish approach...

Yeah, the parsing is an option, but people still have the ability to go in and change their Location via the YaBB profile.  I don't like trusting anything to the users as they'll normally go ahead and screw it up.

Is PJ who I should talk to about?  Like I said, being a newbie, I don't know the administration or even who owns the site.

Thanks for the help Rampy!

I seem to have made a mistake in assuming that the current project is without updates.  I emailed Ron (the owner of the site) and he said that the site is still kept updated.  I just assumed it was outdated because I saw a link to Oscar Controls that I didn't recognize (instead of his domain).

I wouldn't want to "intrude on his territory."  I may talk to him about maybe "joining forces," but even if it is a manual process, he's still got it under control.

Thanks for your suggestions all!

How about adding a people finder to include Australia and other countries?

MemberMap 2.7 for SP 1 and SP 1.1

This mod adds a map-function to YaBB for members to "pin" their location on a map.

Features:

Everybody can (guests only if allowed by Admin):
-view location of members on the main-map
-click on a members pin to view the members profile
-click on a name in the name list in main-map to make the members pin flash
-view members map in members "View Profile"

Members and Adnim can:
-select map, type location, select State/Region* and Country
-point and click on a map to place a pin where they live
-edit their location at any time from "View Profile"
-remove pin from map

Admin can:
-admin can make location required on registration from Admin-Center

-allow/disallow state/region selection
-sort the main-map name list by country or name
-view hide index-headers in name list
-allow/disallow gender-colored pins from Admin-Center
-If gender-color disallowed, admin can choose red, green or blue pin color
-set view/hide location in posts as flag, text or both from Admin-Center

*if enabled by Admin.

Included in the zip file:

-MemberMap.pl
-MemberMap.mod
-country.txt (204 countries)
-continent.txt (6 continents + USA, Canada and Middle America)
-state.txt (120 states/regions/territories in USA, Canada, Australia, Germany, Austria and Switzerland)
-9 maps in .gif format
-204 flags in .gif format

-YaMS 4.02 MemberMap-column add-on
-Mod for compatibility with Member Search by dOCda_S
-readme.txt
-map_howtodo.txt

New Maps:

If you want to add new Maps they must be 550x430 pixels .gif format and should have a meaningfull name (use lowercase and underline for spaces ex.: new_zealand.gif). Upload your new map to your Images folder, and go to "Admin-center - Member Controls - Setup Member Map" and add the name of the Map without the .gif extention (use uppercase and underline for spaces ex.: New_Zealand).
In order to make room for the pins there must be at least 4 pixel "no mans land" at the left and 10 pixel at the top of the map.

####

If necessary, i'd be willing to setup/work on a "staging" version with either dummy data / byoac mysql dump /copy of your yabbse files (less database names/pwd's of course)  and apply this mod...

What do you think?

No. Nothing on that site will work here. That is for YaBB, We run YaBB SE. Only the name is kinda the same. All code is 100% different.

I just want to chime in and say that I am all for a BYOAC Finder that is more automated and contains more info.  (I took a little offense at the remark that my BYOAC Finder site was not updated, nothing major.)

I am all for anything that will improve or aid the byoac community.

If someone wants to tie it in with the current user registration info, maybe a checkbox that would give you the option to be listed on the page...that would be great.
Oh, the memories of living on pizza subs and Dr Pepper...

Aha.  So the thread wasn't deleted.  I clicked on the link in my email and got a thread not found page and thought that it had been deleted for some reason ;)  Sorry for not monitoring it.

At any rate, if you're ok with it Mr Arcade, I'd like to work with you to produce this dynamic solution for all countries.  I understand that you may not program, but it was your idea to begin with and I think you should have input in it.

planetjay, if I were to write a program that could be integrated with the YaBB, would you be interested in integrating.  I understand that YaBB and YaBB SE are entirely different programs, but integrating with YaBB SE is no more difficult.  I could write the script in PHP or Perl, depending on your preference, and would be willing to work closely with you to ensure that it is something that you would want.  I also have webspace where I could setup YaBB SE (if yours was modified, I'd request that you let me know which mods or in what ways) and test the integration there to ensure that it was secure and working completely.

If anyone else is interested in helping or suggesting, please feel free to reply here or let me know via PM, email, or instant messenger (of any sort).  I will now resubscribe to this thread now that I have found it again ;)

yeah, shouldn't be hard if people fill out their profile.
