SLIKSTIK & OSCAR.......
« on: May 15, 2003, 03:40:33 am »
I have read several of the latest threads involving the spinners from OSCAR & SLIKSTIK and although im sure i will get flamed to hell and back for saying this i feel its time to vent a little of what i have seen and how i feel about it.

First off i seen people getting really crappy with christian because he makes posts promoting  his slikstik products and makes comparisons to oscars.......SO WHAT????
I feel there is absolutly nothing wrong with  christian promoting what he feels is "The best" spinner out there.
I felt christians pain and frustration after reading everyone OOOO'ing and AHHHH'ing over oscars spinners.
To be quite frank i see more advertising from OSCAR on here then petty much ANYONE else out there.  Does he get flamed? No!

I am the proud owner of a slikstik classic and can't say enough good things about the product.    The slikstik TORNADO Spinner really does kick ass and mine in all honesty has spun for 6 minutes and 3 seconds!!!     That was one of the koolest and most impressive things to me when i first  got it.        ;)

Now, i have nothing against oscar ,because i dont even know him other then what i have read on the message baords, but  just because there isnt any literal product slamming on oscars part, i get tired of seeing  the  "oscar is better" threads, because i tend to follow  christians thinking and believe that that spinner should spin FREE AND FAST!   If i want to slow it down, then i can do so myself.      The weight of the tornado spinner feels heavy enough to me!

So, i guess what my point is here is that people need to lay off slamming on christian just because he states what is factual in his oppinion.  Oscar is just as guilty of promoting his stuff on here too.    How do i know if i would like oscars  better then slikstiks?    I am VERY content with the tornado spinner and it suits all my wants and needs exceedingly well and i couldn't be happier with slikstik and their support!

Christian, do me a favor and rise to the challenge and make  DOT spinner!!!   You know you GOTTA!!!!!   Just because you CAN! :) hehehe

LONG LIVE SLIKSTIK!  :)
Rock on christian!  YOU DA' MAN! heheh

I'm not going to flame you, and I really do not think anyone else should either...however, I do feel compeled to reply because in my opinion you have misinterpreted a few things.

1) I have not read anything slamming christian for promoting his product, I think everyone or at least most would beleive the he makes a quality product...if he didn't people would not buy it.

2) what I have seen is people slamming christian for his attitude towards oscar...something I have never seen displayed on oscars part. christian has on more than one occasion has displayed barely veiled animosity towards his competitor, and those that like someone elses product better, while oscar on the other hand seems to genuinely want to help everyone no matter what their preference is.

3)as for advertising goes...isn't this a good place to do that...after all this community probably drums up most if not all the business for either one...why not announce your new products here? oscar recently advertised his dot...christian recently announced his colored tornado nobs...we have two very different if not similar goals...oscar want a more authentic feeling spinner, christian is going for a more feespinning improvement over the original...who is right? who is better? isn't that going to be up to each and every person when they go to buy a spinner?

you enjoy your purchase, and that is good...I'm glad you got what you wanted, I bought mine from oscar, and likewise I am happy as well. don't you think it would be absurd for my to think I'm happier than you just because........

bottom line no matter who buys what, both individuals have made landmarks in this hobby, and are given their dues though patronage...

It's seriously tacky to go into your competitors thread and promote your own product. Thats his biggest offence in my opinion.

I find myself basing my purchases on the person behind the product more than the product even! Funny, but I am. Luckily I don't have to worry about Oscar's product though either.

Nothing against Christain but he just seems to give off this slick Used Car Salesman vibe that makes me run in the opposite direction.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

Besides cabinet plan vendors, I think pretty much think every vendor that makes Mame specific products is putting out great stuff.

The more business the both of these guys (and Andy, and anyone else I forgot), the better. More business means they can expand their product lines and offer more products. The real arcade industry might be dying but the home control industry is just taking off. Imagine where these guys might be in a few years.

Also. I am glad that their spinners seem to have real differences, that makes for more choices for everyone. If they both sold identical spinners there would be no point and they would quickly put each other out of business via a price war.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I think this is a very good point -- they both have different spinner designs, each with different strengths and weaknesses. I think there's enough room in the "MAME ecosphere" to support two spinner vendors.

Hopefully things will be a bit more civil around here...no need for a "blood feud"

If you go back and read the thread I think you will see that there is definitely not an anti-Christian vibe.  In fact, much of that thread was dedicated to discussing whether or not Oscar's spinner would be compatible with Christian's new knob.  There is clearly support for products.  It was his particular antics in that thread that drew so much fire.  And they deserved the fire.  His posts were inappropriate.

First off: why is every groovytuesday subject screaming all caps?  Who does he think he is snack?

second:  People like Oscar because he consistently gives back to community with helpful articles, insight, newbie handholding, technical info, and bringing great MAME/arcade control centric products to market (which granted slik stik does as well).

I don't get as much of that warm fuzzy feeling or as much use out of slik stik christian's posts... I don't see his posts contain much content besides  promoting a new product/etc or answer a slik stick related query/comment (which is fine and good to have)

I bet part of the backlash SSC gets is just the old DIY versus BIY holy war (do it yourself vs Buy it yourself)

now I've got to go read the thread in question that's causing all the fuss=P

I think both have great products; I think the only real issue was Christian doing the "Mine is better than yours" right in Oscar's announcement thread.  If he wanted to do a head-to-head comparison or promote his own products, it would have been more polite to start a new thread.

Ah, I just read the last bunch of posts of that one thread....
FWIW, I certainly hope I didn't spark the little controversy over in the 'DOT first impressions' thread (if that is indeed what this thread is about) simply because I just wanted to know about the free spinning quality of the new spinner.  It's a valid question to an important trait (smooth free spin or stop after a few seconds?) of any type of spinner.  If I hadn't asked I'm sure someone would have.  I mentioned the other brand merely to illustrate what I was talking about.  My intention was not to start a tornado vs DOT debate.... :P

Look GROOVEY, it's actually very simple.  People don't care about self-promotion around here.  But Christian's posts definitely had a note of "getting in OSCAR's face".  To promote your product is cool.  To put down someone elses product, as a competitor, in their own thread is not so cool (IMHO).

Someone described it as "lack of tact".  I agree with that.  No biggie, just kind of tacky.

Oh, and BTW, OSCAR *does* give back to this community as much, or probably more, than anyone.  So, yeah, people stick up for OSCAR.  I think he's earned the loyalty.  That shouldn't be threatening to anyone.  There's plenty of love to go around. :)

"Besides cabinet plan vendors"

I decided to mention (because it is sort of on topic) CyberPunk sells plans (MAMEroom) , and he is a good guy! I don't really think plans should cost money, and they can be found for free. People like the convienience; they have other options. He gives a lot back to the community. He does make a lot of money on it (guessing by how much he gives away). He even put up another message board (and hosted mine for me ;D)
