I was wondering if anyone out there can help me get the dimensions of a KI or KI2 side panel. For my next cab, i'm looking to use a KI OR KI2 cab shape/dimensions as my starting point. I'm basically looking for all the dimensions of the side panel. Including Monitor area height, marquee area height, etc. I'm also looking for measurements(in degrees) of the the various angles(monitor area, transition to marquee, etc. Any and all info on the side panel is what i'm looking for. Thanx in advance to anyone that can help.

Sonic has a thread in My Projects titled My Cabinet. He has a KI cabinet. maybe you could go over there and ask him.

Aside from being a KI cabinet, it's a fairly standard Midway cabinet. It's used for games like the Mortal Kombat series, Area 51, and other Midway games. Even if you can't find a KI locally you can surely find one of those others.

Games like NBA Jam and Blitz also use the same cabinet, but the control panel is oversized to accomodate 4 players so you may not get the measurements you want. And there are 2 basic variations of the cabinet. The KI games use the full-frontal variation with a coin door large enough for a bill acceptor or 4 coin slots whereas the MK series used a tapered front that could only accomodate 2 coin slots.

I actually have a KI2 machine of my own, but the thing is with my brother and he lives like 10 hours from me. (sorry)

If you do get the dimensions, make sure you post them not only on personal site, but here as well. We could use more cabinets specs, and the Midway cabs may be the best ever created. (Don't forget internal dimensions such as monitor mounting brackets, either.)

I got a KI2 cab, and could give you some dimensions on it if you'd like. I'll deliver them in metres though, as we scandinavians do not calculate in foot nor inch.

I'll do some measuring when I get home from work if you're still interested

Found this cab here, it's a mortal combat cab, but it's exactly the same as mine... I dunno if there's any dimensions listed in this pdf, but take a look at it. If this does not help you I will go to work @

hey sonic, I'm pretty much doing the same thing (trying to recreate the KI cab from scratch) and i want the shape and everything to be just like yours. I looked through the pdf and theres no dimensions =(. If you could get the dimensions from yours it would be awesome, and also if you could tell me the placement of the parts on the control panel, like how far the joystick is from the edge or from the buttons and such. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you

About the control panel... take a look at my thread called "My Project" in Project announcements section... somewhere down in the thread I posted a layout for a control-panel inlay... now, this graphic has been scaled a bit down in order not to make it to big for this forum, but it shows how the buttons and the joystick sits... if you want I can upload the .eps file to my webserver so you can grab it... if you open this eps file in illustrator you will be able to read the accurate cordinates and sizes of the holes for the buttons and the joysticks, as it's made in a 1 to 1 size of the original control panel.

Tell me if you're interested, and I'll post a link here to the eps file.

Did some measurements here after work, couldn't find my tool to get the degrees though, but here's what I got for you untill now... hope you'll find it usefull... sorry for the lousy graphic, it was made in a pretty hurry!!!

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks those cabinets are the ultimate. Plenty of room for controls and they just look cool! This will be great to finally have the dimensions so I can build one as well. Thanks Sonic!

The KI/MK/MKII/MKIII cabinets are all based off that great Midway cabinet design. I love it. I loosely based my cabinet designs off of it.

Here a pic from KLOV that might help someone trying to build this thing... Doesn't look that complicated.. (BTW, I've never built a cab before)

P.S...If you look closely you'll notice that this Mk3 cab was once a KI. you can tell by the 6 button layout and the nintendo sticker on the side..

Sonic,

Any chance of getting horizontal and vertical measurements instead of the parallel ones. Can work out the angles if we know the other two measurements. Also is the 71cm supposed to be from the back of the cab to the back of the panel?

I'm glad you posted what you did as I'll probably be having my cab like this.

Based *entirely* off of SONIC's dimensions, I sketched up what it would look like and filled in some missing dimensions and angles. I don't understand the 71cm dimension in SONIC's sketch, it is shown longer than the 99cm dimension along the bottom of the cab, so I ignored the 71cm one. Anyway, perhaps these sketches will help, but I can't verify that they are correct because I don't have one of these cabs. The first pic shows that I matched SONIC's dims, and the second pic is the rest of the dims. Dims are in mm / [inches] format. If anyone is interested in my AutoCAD file, it is at http://www.oscarcontrols.com/tmp/KillerInstinct.zip. (Note I drew the cab full scale in millimeters, so you have to scale it by .03937 for inches.)

. Does the panel for the speakers look less horizontal in the cad drawing than the actual pic from klov? Or is it just me.

Wonder if Sonic could check some of Oscar's dimensions

Yeah, I agree that what I drew doesn't seem to match the KLOV photo. I suspect that it has something to do with the angle of the control panel. The one in the photo has a slant to it, and Sonic's sketch shows it horizontal. I added an 8deg slant while keeping the edge dimensions, and it seems to look closer to the klov photo now.

Awesome work Oscar, i was trying to figure those angles out myself, but math was never my strong point.

Well if you look closely you'll notice that the control panel is just mounted over the cabinet in the front, anyways (since the control panel is modular and comes in different sizes). It bolts down from the inside in case you're trying to move a larger machine through a doorway.

It would be inaccurate to try to make just one measurement from the side. What you really need to know is the size of the cabinet with the control panel removed and then a seperate measurement of the control panel.

As much as I love these cabs, it would be a shame to see an inadequate recreation. For those on this board that have one, please take the time and get real measurements of this cabinet. Again, it would also be helpful to know the internal measurements as well because there are monitor mounting brackets and control panel mounts that aren't accounted for just by looking at the outside.

I don't mean to be a whiner, but why would anyone build something that looks like a Midway machine when they can just build a real Midway machine?

You are whining, you should be happy that someone took the time to document this and post it here. If you asked nicely for the specific dimensions you want without putting people down you might get them.

Some people want a Midway looking cabinet but aren't necessarily going for a reproduction due to other constraints, like door way size or customizeing it to be optimum for their own height.

If all one wanted was an exact midway cab its usually cheaper and its definately easier to just go buy one.

lol Here's another pic that might help. I took the original and applied a perspective effect in Paintshop until the corners lookedsquare and then I erased everything but the side.. It's not perfect but its the closest thing to a side view I could come up with.. At least we can get the angles off of it if nothing else.

I just found some 3d models that Howard Casto did of these cabs and the site has downloadable 3ds files. Someone should ask Howard if it would be ok to use his models to get the dimensions from. I don't know if he measured the dimensions off a cab or just used side pictures to approximate but either way he did a great job and it would be a great help for building a cab. 1st of all.. my drawing was a bit incorrect... ofcourse the 71 cm are from the end of the cab to the beginning of the control panel, should be obvious to the waken reader

My bad though, but now it's cleared up I assume

2nd... still haven't found any tools to measure the actual degrees... and won't be able to in the next five weeks, am on the schoolbench for the next 5 weeks, about 150 kilometres from home
