MAME or Vantage for my setup?
« on: November 10, 2004, 07:56:18 pm »
Hi guys, i'm making my parents a gift (a desktop cabinet with all the games of their youth). Here is my setup.

P120, 24meg ram, 4 gig scsi (might be to loud) and DOS.

Now, I ran across Vantage, and it was the first choice, because it's streamlined, runs on almost anything, and can do vertical easy (This WOULD be a vertical type cabinet)

But I was looking at the games it emulates, and while I can live with this, (and I'm sure they can) I was wondering if a OLD version of mame that would run about as fast as Vantage would emulate more games?

I'll be happy with the vantage setup (and like the idea that it's something different) but if I could cram more classics for it, that would be nice.

in the end, i'm sure all that they will want to play is MsPacman(mom) and Galaga(dad).

.... ever since I was young, my dad and mom have almost MADE me play the classics whilst I was begging to play the Street Fighter 2 machine. So i'm sure they will enjoy it.

I'd go with Vantage unless there's a specific game that you want to play that isn't supported.  Then I'd try MAME .36 or so.

I'm not at the "front-end" stage, so this is a rather NOOB comment to make, but shouldn't front-ends be configurable so you define which Emulator gets activated for a specific game?

What I mean is, for example the front end shows Galaga and Rolling Thunder in the menu. you SHOULD be able to configure Galaga to run off Vantage, and then Rolling Thunder to run off MAME.

So is it not like that? If not, MameWah, get cracking on that now! ;-)

NO MORE!!

Ummm....I think the post is totally related to that........Use Vantage for majority of the games because you want the speed, but if vantage does not support it, go with a version of mame and use a frontend to select the emulator you want to use...and besides, a frontend overall may be better for you parents depending on how comfortable they are with various emulators...

I also vote vantage, don't use Mame with under a 200 mhz computer.

The guy is talking like he has to choose only ONE emulator and that's it, he's locked in to it. I was stated that that is not the case if a Front-end can be configured to use either...
