Scrolling LED display/Marquee
« on: August 10, 2004, 01:15:17 pm »
I am exploring ideas for a custom MAME/Emulator cabinet.

One idea is to install a scrolling LED text display (Pinball table or shop window  type display, not sure of the correct terminology) either instead of the Marquee, or as well as the Marquee depending on available sizes and cost.

How anyone else tried this.

I would like to control the text it displays from the PC, and maybe kick of scripts when launching a program to change the text.

I vaguely recall reading an article a few months ago about this in one of the UK monthly computer magazines but can't remember which one

If anyone has any info on the display units, software to control it,  or any ideas which would help, I would be keen to hear

Thanks

Are you talking about one of the red dotted scrolling displays?

I want one of those in my car so I can more effectively flip people off.

what would be really cool is if you could get an LCD screen the size of your marquee and have it display at full screen the marquee of the current game you are playing.

Thats what I had in mind, although would be interested in any other ideas. The Beta Brite displays mentioned in one reply would be good. I'll see if available in UK.

That's only the beginning.  You could have it delay a few seconds, and then launch into a high scores list, or button directions, or gameplaying hints.

You could use a Lite Bright but you would have to be really fast with the switching...lol
