Another CP question
« on: June 02, 2004, 04:50:23 pm »
I'm going to be building a CP extremely similar to the SS Quad 4.  Ok, it's exactly like it but with the Asteroid buttons closer together (why are they that far away?) and a few other tweaks.

What is the "universal" distance between holes for pushbuttons (1 1/8" Happ)?  Just by eyeballing it I would say 6/8" or 7/8".  But I wanted to know what everyone else uses.

What is everyone's prefered way of mounting joysticks?  I know some route from the top and just laminate over, some route from bottom.  Also what is the actual size of the hole you drill(for Competition joysticks).  Do you drill a 1 1/4" hole and pop it from under, or do you drill out the size of the shaft and explode it and pop the joystick down from the top?

I'm going with the Ultimarc 2 1/4" trackball, the mounting kit is an approx 6" square.  I plan to mount this 4 1/2" from the base.  So the actual bottom of the ball will be approx 6" from the person.  Yay or Nay?

Above that I am mounting the Oscar 3 spinner.  I was thinking of going 3" from the top of trackball mounting kit (So about 4 1/2" follow through space).  Enough clearance?

How should I config the Spinner fire buttons?  Map them to Player 1 SW1 and SW2 (l-ctrl/l-alt) on the left of the spinner and SW1 and SW2 to the right of the spinner?

Thanks for your time, I may have a few more questions in a bit.

As close together as they will go. Most templates you find are based on either original SF2 templates or MK2/3 templates. Both have the buttons spaced out further than they should be for playing games where you gotta be nimble with the buttons. I used http://axelb.free.fr/caj/images/dispo00.jpg for mine, but they are too far apart, I'll be changing that on my new panel.

Most do bottom mounting. From my experiance top mounting does not feel as secure, but that's probably just my perception. It's also alot easier and neater if you bottom mount. I just drilled a 1 1/8" hole for the stick and it cleared fine.
You take the shaft out of the base, mount the base on the bottom, put the shaft and the grommets through the base and attach the flange to the underside of the base.

If you're going to be playing golden tee, just make sure you have a good distance from the ball to the bezel.

See above, if doing golden tee and bowling games, that may not be the best place for the spinner.

doesn't matter

Wow,  those templates have them 1.6" apart.  I was thinking less then half that, so I see what you mean about changing it.  I was thinking the pusbutton bezels should be about 2/8s from eachother.  About the width of a pen.

Also I have a question about the IPAC.  What would be the best way to setup the classics joystick.  It will be an ultimate 4 way as opposed to a competition-8.  Can I just have both the P1 and classics stick going to the same screw terminals?

The same I was wondering about the spinner controls.  Since they are just 2 P1 fire buttons, couldn'r i just wire the 1st and 3rd buttons to the terminal SW1 and wire button 2 and 4 to SW2?

Anybody have an answer for this question?  I was about to do the same thing.  Does it work?  Sorry for bumping another 2 year old topic.

Yest, that's a great way to do it.  That way you don't have to map multiple inputs in MAME.  On my 4-p panel, I have three different joysticks wired to the joystick 1 inputs.

Yep it works.  You can run multiple buttons/joystick directions to the same port on the ipac.
