WTB: Logic card from a WD Hard drive...
« on: April 29, 2004, 04:07:35 pm »
I messed up bigtime. I shorted out the 12 v to the ground on my HD PS while hooking up a fan inside my PC. It toasted the circuit board on the back of the HD.

I need a damaged (But with a good circuit card section)

Western DIgital "CAVIAR" Hard drive. Mine is 100GB. They can be found in eMachines fmr about a year ago...

Have one laying around? There are a few files I would like to pull off of it.

Thank you.

I don't mean to be the bearer of bad news but I'm pretty sure that you're going to have to find the EXACT model drive made at the same factory with a manufacture date VERY close to your drive for this to even have a CHANCE of working.

Hard drive manufacturers often change the design of drives over time as they manufacture them.   They can change firmware, electronics design, and even the number of platters (which changes the geometry) without changing the basic model number.  Some times, the physical differences can only be detected because the formatted size of the drive is ever so slightly larger or smaller.  That's why the manufacturers always need to know the serial number when you contact tech support.  They can tell how the drive is constructed by the serial number.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel Core i7-4790K @ 4.8GHz

News: I found a "good" caviar 100gb HD. I swapped the logic boards. I was able to save my documents and address book.

I restarted the computer. It found "Errors" on the disk, and repaired them. Now, I cannot boot from that (The original) HD.

I reassembled the "good" 100gb HD, formatted it, and now use it as my primary HD.

My original HD is in an antistatic bag, awaiting the day I can rescue all my MP3s, movies, MAME stuff, etc.

Yes, I know HD manufacturers are a PITA when it comes to changing things. I think if I can find a logic board, I can use the drive as a slave drive, and extract the remaining docs.

There is nothing critical on it now, just things I would like to get back someday...

I'll post a pic of what a logic board looks like after shorting btw the 12v and ground on a computer PS...

Have you check with western digital, you can likely get the drive replaced if it is under warranty still.  You won't be able to save your data going the warranty route but at least you'll have a working drive again.

Yes, I have been roundy-round w/ WD. The drive is NOT under warranty: Neither with WD or eMachines.

I desire to find a used one. I have checked w/ local computer shops, to no avail. I have checked with HD recovery places to see if they sell repair parts. No dice.

Finding this part is the only cheap solution.

Anyone?
