7 buttons layout
« on: April 19, 2004, 07:28:01 am »
Hi,

I'm starting some prototyping with a 7 button layout (figther panel)

and I would like to know wich layout is prefered.

the buttons will look something like this

         O O O
        O O O
      O

which disposition to choose ?
         4 5 6                  1 2 3
        2 3 4        or       4 5 6
       1                       1

I'm on the planning stage

First layout is what I used (makes Neo Geo set up easier).  You will probably need to redo most of the fighters anyway if you want them to be in the arcade layout formats.

If you use the first layout, won't you have problems with the repeated "4" button in the Capcom fighters?

Your right,  It was very early when I posted so I have no idea what i was even thinking.

Mine config is:

   4 5 6
   1 2 3
7

*shrug* my bad.

I use:

  5 6 7
  2 3 4
1

This works well for games with only 1 or 2 buttons (atleast for me).

And then for fighters I manually change it to

  4 5 6
  1 2 3
7

(7 is not used for most fighters)

Use JFront as a frontend...

and then you can have both quick and easy... Just setup a config for all 2 player 6 button games (streetfighter games) and one for 2 player 4 button games... and you have them both working well in minutes.

OK i was confused, and made a bad copy past.
I'm still hesitating between
   4 5 6                   5 6 7
   1 2 3          and    2 3 4
7                          1

I guess the best is to wire everithing, try one setupt, switch the wiring and try the new one, and decide after tat.
as for the momment there's just a prototype, I can try everiyhing

thank's for feedback
I'm on the planning stage

Use JFront as a frontend...

hummm the frontend I will use, is homebrew and
1) I did'nt plan to include such config options.
just sort/select games and start them just using joy and buttons.
2) they will be NO button (mapped on tab) on the cab for such configuration access.
as admin controls I will just have coin1, coin2 and escape. coin buttons will be relocated to the coin acceptor
when I'll put one inside the cab.

abyway thank's for the idea, maybee version n (n really big) will include such possibilties)

I'm on the planning stage

btw, the config in jfront isn't done at runtime but config.

if about 5 minutes... I can configure EVERY game with specific parameters..

IE, configure all 8ways one way... all dual8ways another.  All 8ways with 6 buttons another..

Its nice because I configure SF setup once, MK games once, and have about 2 others I end up doing.

I've gone with

1234
456

in a slightly curved layout.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

What you really need to ask yourself is what type of games to you play more? Cater the assignment of buttons to whichever is easiest.

Isn't there a util that auto finds all neo geo games and can set the buttnos they way you want for neo geo, and do the same for capcom, so it doesn;t matter the layout. If one isn't in existence I would make one if anyone would use it.

I am in the process of trying to decide how many buttons to put on my cocktail cab (on wide side where 2 players will play side by side) - it will have 3 bottons on the short ends!

jamma cabs usually have 3 but i all see many standup cabs that have 4, 6 and 7

which games need 6 or 7 buttons?

i need to figure out if it is really worth the CP "real estate" - especially when i want to try and squeeze a trackball on there as well.

Actually, setting up the MAME ini files is arguably better, and it does basically what you just described.  However, there are some restrictions.  Scroll down to Tiger-Heli's post in the link I just gave.

sure they are not the figthers...

my favorite are puzzloop, volfield, pang, etc... 4 way 1 button.
