Keyboard LED lights, all 3?
« on: March 20, 2004, 11:08:58 am »
I got my IPAC and Optipac from Ultimarc yesterday and for that extra adde bling factor I also got their 3-LED light harness for the keyboard LED indicators.

Can anyone tell me of a game that uses all 3 LED's?  Ms. Pacman is a good example of one that lights up 2 lights, but I have yet to find a game that lights up the Scroll Lock LED.

Mainly, I want to know if I really need to drill a hole in my future panel for an LED that will seldom if ever be lit.

Thanks!
Dave

I believe only the first two get used for credits, but the third lights up for games like "Spy Hunter" for the 'van' light and 'Out Run' for the brake, but I could be wrong about that.  Off for testing!

Well, Out Run uses the caps lock light, and I couldn't get Spy Hunter to do anything.

I know Ajax uses all three, but I could never figure out what the Scroll Lock one meant.  I was planning to leave it off, but if it turns out I need it for the Van Light in SpyHunter, I'll be bummed.

Did some more digging -

SpyHunter definitely does not use the LED's however, newer builds flash the Van light onscreen under the bezel artwork.

Ajax flashes the scroll lock LED when you collect a power-up, but the power-up also flashes in the game on-screen, so it's not really important.

If you do a search in the MAME source code for files containing "set_led_status", you will come up with about 70 drivers which flash the LED's, but I couldn't go any further than this.

I spent some hours doing my own "research" and found that none of the games I play on a regular basis use the scroll-lock LED on the keyboard, so I believe I will non-destructively remove it from my IPAC LED harness so I can put it back at some point.

To power my coin-door lights, I am using the +12V wire from a power connector off my PC power supply.  What I think I will do is connect the +5V wire to this spare LED and mount it right next to my power button on the panel.
