dirts 2 in one project
« on: March 09, 2004, 01:48:54 am »
ok, here is my idea. take a pole position cab and a rotj cab and mame them both with one computer. all you purist dont worry all the origial guts are still in both cabs i didn't cut anything out just in case someone down the road wants to restore them. i've got the pole position working and all i am waiting for is the new monitor chassis to get here for the rotj. the only drawback is you can only play one at a time but thats ok until build i another computer. i plan on building a freestanding pedistal that will fit in between the two cabs with a joystick and all the buttons needed for navigation in mamewah. that was the easiest solution i could think of for this project. in fact i might make the box sit on the side part of the rotj cab right where the computer is sitting in the pictures and mount the jot sticking out at you. that way the two cabs can sit right next to each other.

pole position: i bought this on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3274361178&category=13716&rd=1
i got a mouse hack and encoder pcb form oscar controls for the steering wheel and added a microswitch to the pedal assembly for the gas pedal and just wired up the shifter the way it was so you have to shift down then back up to shift gears.it sucks but at least it works. i pulled a 19" wg monitor from the closet-o-arcade parts and put it in and hooked it all up to an ipac and arcadevga. and its done.

rotj: i also bought this one on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3270570638&category=13716&rd=1
this one had a monitor but the chassis is bad so i ordered one from quarter arcade.  the joystick just happend to be a wico leaf so that goes in the closet-o-arcade parts for another project down the road. next i just pulled out the star wars yoke that i have had for about 6 months. i hacked it with a sidewinder about 2 months ago so all i had to do was bolt it in. i am happy i just found a marquee for it today and when i pulled the old bezel art off the bezel the rotj artwork was still there and in good shape.i will probably have the side art on sunday.

i'll keep you all posted as they come along. here are some new pictures.

Seems like it would be much cheaper and easier to buy a cheap PC on ebay for the second cab rather than building a pedastal between them with all the needed connections to make them both work off the same PC. It's an interesting idea though.

well the reason for the pedistal is because neither of the games use a joystick and there is no way to navigate in mamewah and i really dont want to use a keyboard all the time. it really didn't have to do with the one computer idea. and yes i do want to build another computer for the other cab and it looks like i am going to have to because andy from ultimarc just let me know that the arcadevga card will not run 2 arcade monitors in windows, only in dos. so it is either build another computer or try to find a cheap 19" vga monitor. and as far as building a pedistal goes i have a bunch of left over peices of melamine from my golden tee cabinet build so thats no problem to cut one out real quick.

dirt,
you are a "mouse hack" with a microswitch for a weener. i think you should quit playing with video games and get you dune buggy running, fix up your hot rod and get to work on your tractor.

love stevo.

p.s. are we gonna have a party for begley when he gets back??

Ah, that makes sense. I guess I didn't pick up on that the first time. I use a wireless presentation pointer for navigation in mine. Works very well and I got it on ebay for about $10. Something like that might work well for you.

OT:

But where did you find the Star Wars Yoke?

i got it on ebay about 6 months ago. it was missing the triggers and outside peices of the handles. i got the nos handles from usedelectronics and the triggers from someone on rgvac(or maybe it was the other way around, sorry my memory sucks). i then hacked it with a sidewinder and it has been sitting in the closet-o-arcade parts ever since.
