JPac SHIFT Issue
« on: September 04, 2014, 05:35:21 pm »
Hello folks... long time no post.

I am having (and have been having) an issue with my MAME cab with JPAC where my SHIFT options stop working after a load up and a few games...

They will work after each load up,  so it's NOT a physical connection issue.... but sometime during gameplay the SHIFT stops working preventing me from SHIFT commanding me out of MAME (P1 + P2 START)... I have to lift the CP and escape manually.  P1 and P2 show up independently but I can not get P1 + P2 SHIFT option to work... unless I reboot and we're back to square one.

Any ideas?

Hey!  I intermittently have had the exact same issue.  Windows XP on your cab PC?  It seemed to happen with certain games like Ibara.  As part of troubleshooting I turned off sticky and repeat keys and their notifications and it seemed to vanish, but since I made the changes RL got busy and haven't had time to thoroughly test.  Hope this helps.

I've had this issue with every single JPAC I've ever owned.

I ended up rewiring Player 1 start to another input on the JPAC and using combinations of inputs in MAME to do the admin functions.  That solution always works.

Thanks Jim Jelly.  If it does this again after further testing, I'll take your advice.

I use MAMEWAH... I have an extra button that I currently use for PAUSE... but it's in a spot right north of the trackball and gets bumped from time to time.  I much prefer to use the P1 START + P2 START option if at all possible but this happens EVERY time I use the MAME cabinet if I play more than a game or two...

It's getting old...

This would be caused by a switch becoming stuck closed. Usual suspects are the coin door switch or cabinet service switch, "door open" switch etc.

You heard the man... take those buttons apart and clean the petrified cola out of them.

This would be caused by a switch becoming stuck closed. Usual suspects are the coin door switch or cabinet service switch, "door open" switch etc.

This is what I was told before... however, a reboot fixes the issue for a while until it happens again... then a reboot fixes the issue again?   It seems to me that if it was a stuck button,  it would be consistent.  It would also seem to me that most stuck buttons can be seen when writing a text file... but none are showing up (but again, not a fool-proof test)...

I've double...triple...quadruple checked my buttons and they are all fine.  I don't have a coin door switch... no service switch... etc... plus,  like I said,  it works fine every reboot for a certain number of games/button pushes...  Am I wrong to assume that if it was a stuck button the issue would present itself immediately upon boot up?

EDIT: Can anyone suggest a program for checking all button inputs?

A good test program is the keyboard test from www.passmark.com which has a 30 day trial.

If you can drop me an email I can suggest other checks and if necessary we can replace the board.
