Drool
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:12:03 am »

So, a friend i hadn't seen in ages calls me on Saturday. He's been doing lighting etc at a museum. At the moment they are hosting the Brisbane Queer Film Festival. He scored some freebies and wanted to know if i wanted to see some lesbian movies with him...

I was about 10 minutes late to both movies, because both times he called at the last minute. First movie was Argentinian, and i spent about 2/3 of the time being perplexed because i think i missed some key elements at the start. Some hot scenes though

But this is a review of the second movie. Called Drool. It's a comedy set in Tulsa, Oklahoma. About a working class housewife who falls in love with another woman, her new neighbour, a travelling cosmetics salesperson. The wife is abused and belittled by her oafish husband. They have a teenage daughter and a younger son. No one is happy to start with, except the travelling salesperson, who infects everyone (except the husband, a racist) with her Joie de vivre. The story flows well, and it seems to channel a bit of 'Better Off Dead', what with the animated notebook sketches of the daughter that pepper the movie. There are some real 'laugh out loud' moments. This isn't a particularly smutty movie, and I am pretty sure it will show on SBS tv in Australia one day. A quality 'feel good' flick. Watch out for it on cable, video store or what have you as i think it's a failry limited release in the cinemas.

4/5 (probably a bit higher had i seen it from the start. I've never claimed my reviews were objective  ;) )
