12 volt coin mech jpac how do i connect it?
« on: September 05, 2011, 10:08:52 pm »
hey guys

i want to connect my 12 volt coin mech to the jpac. one wire goes to the gameboard powersupply 12volt but that is now disconnected, so is it safe to connect it directly to my pc taking 12 volt from that?

connect to peripheral connect yellow pin only?
http://www.smpspowersupply.com/ATX-connectors.JPG

just asking to make sure, rather safe than sorry.

You need to connect what is called a dry contact to your jpac.  It has no voltages  on it and just completes the circuit between ground and your jpac pin for coin input.   A diagram of what outputs your mech has will help determine what pins to connect.  If you connect the 12 v to a jpac input you will damage the jpac.  It does not matter if the jpac gets 12V from the computer or the arcade supply it will still destroy the input on the jpac.   A jpac senses its inputs by taking 5V to GND.

any step by step on how todo this?
im also abit confused. cause if the coin mech uses 12 volt to power it and it does not get it how will it work?

The coin mech can be connected to 12V and ground but you have to know what contact to connect to your jpac.  As I said before you need the circuit diagram or contact list for your output pins from the coin mech.   No step by step unless you can provide the info for your coin mech.  ???

Sounds like something with an opto type coin switch to me....

Maybe he's talking about the 12V for the reject button light?

Even an opto output has a safe side.   I don't think speculation will help.  What is really needed is a diagram of the output of the coin mech.

Most coin mechs (excepting the simple microswitch type) have open-collector outputs. You can confirm this by measuring the output with it not connected to anything. Because there is no pull-up resistor it is likely to be at a low voltage, below 1 volt. When the coin is inserted it should momentarily drop to zero.
If this is the case its safe to connect to the J-PAC.

If the coin signal is sitting at 12 volts then, as Bob says, you need more info on the mech. It might be OK to connect to the J-PAC as the coin input has a 5 volt zener diode which limits the voltage to 5. But, if the mech is actively pulling the voltage to 12 (very unusual) the zener will not be able to limit the voltage.

The coin mechs we sell have a coin signal which does sit at 12 volts but is not actively driven to this level. It sits at this voltage because there is a high-value pull-up resistor in the mech pulling it up to 12. This is OK to connect to the J-PAC as the zener has no problem limiting the voltage to 5 against the weak pull-up of the resistor.

So how does it get wired?  I had problems.  How do you hook it up to a Ipac?  Do you need a zener diode?

Thanks,
Southpaw

Set the NO (normally open) jumper and connect the coin output to the input of your ipac or other controller.
