mounting a 15" VGA in a Battlezone unit
« on: June 16, 2002, 10:51:37 am »
Hi there.

I bought a Battlezone unit for my dad a while ago and not long after I did, the monitor went bad.  After much searching, I found another monitor but it went bad too.

Given MAME's faithful emulation of such a simple game and the much higher reliability of PC components (including monitors), we have decided to gut the Battlezone unit of all of it's ancient components in favor of a MAME box and a VGA monitor.

My first question is, does anybody think the monitor will act weird if the picture is aiming straight up toward the sky?  This was one of the Battlezone units that has the periscope, so a mirror is used to redirect the horizontally mounted monitor into th periscope.  The FAQ on the www.arcadecontrols.com web site talks about potential problems (video distortions) when turning a monitor on its side, but there is no mention of monitors on their back.  I suppose there aren't too many people doing this.

Second, it's my intention to buy a regular VGA monitor and strip away all the plastics and stuff so I can get to the metal frame within the monitor.  Does anybody foresee any mechanical difficulties in doing this?  If so, what is an alternative suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Let me clarify this paragraph:

What I meant was; once I get to the metal frame, I need to create some kind of a bracket that allows the monitor to be suspended from the sides of the cabinet wall as the original was.  The original monitor used an "L" bracket on the left and right sides of the tube that were used to hang the monitor from the sides.

Thanks again.
