Well, I happened to be searching my local Craigslist yesterday when I came across a broken juke for $100. I came across it first and tonight I now have my project machine! The grills aren't as transparent as they appear. The flash really makes it look like they aren't there. There is also some really neat lighting effects already going on. We'll just have to see where this goes!
Here is my todo list as of right now:
1. Possibly put a 23" monitor where the song selection window is. This would be for music videos, karaoke, and visualizations utilizing Freebox by Barcrest.
2. Get the record selector to work so that when something is selected, it works as well. (I'm fairly certain someone on the boards here has got this to work.)
3. Figure out where to incorporate the touchscreen monitor for song selection.
4. Use my two 12" cerwin vega floor speakers for audio.

A couple more pics.

A couple more.

It looks like you've got another cool project on your hands. You've got plenty of speaker there. What are your plans for the amp?
Very nice find. Have fun with it.
-
Thanks. I will give details on my hardware setup as it goes along. I have some plans.
-
Mccoy, you are in Columbus, right?
I scan the Columbus craigslist daily for an old jukebox to convert. I missed that one though.
Good find!
-
Thanks man! I've been looking forever. Craigslist is now next to woot and slickdeals.net on my daily tabs. It's a perfect fit for the price and I think I can make it look pretty slick.
-
Sweet find! That thing looks like it means business. >:D
Big-ass monitor would look great in there.
-
Thanks Knievel. I wanted to ask you for any tips about general build. Did you like the usb volume control you used, and is there anything you would change if you could go back?
-
I realized that there would not be enough room for the receiver inside, so I have removed the record mechanism and have begun gutting the cabinet. If it makes anyone who cares feel better, whoever had it before me did quite the job on the wiring and I don't think it would've been repairable.
-
Love the Powermate, nice and hefty.
Only thing I would do different is an LCD monitor instead of the CRT, which I have actually done since.
The flat surface is much nicer to look at and use.
Using home audio speakers as you suggested works well. I used a pair of Technics I bought back in high school and they sound great in the cabinet.
-
Excellent. I have a couple 12" Cerwin Vega floor speakers and a Kenwood Receiver I plan on using to power the badboy. I have decided to investigate using an Ledwiz to work the lighting in conjunction with the software. We'll see how that goes.
Thanks for the advice on the volume. I would really love to be able to use the volume on the receiver to avoid the humm noise that is there when nothing is playing. I'll report back as details come in.
-
On my driving cab project I put a volume pot in-line between the CPU (Xbox in my case) and the amp. Like you, I wanted to use the pot from the amp, but it had a 20 pin PCB attached and I didn't want to screw it up by removing it and putting a ribbon cable in-line. There was a very slight hum initially, but it went away when I rerouted the stereo wires (volume pot & speakers) away from all power wires/components.
Good luck with your volume control solution.
-
Thank you Coder. I may be hitting you up for further details. All of my current setup is over at OSU in storage. I need to get over there and get that picked up.

Did the same thing with my cab. Built in volume control on the speakers would have been hell to dismantle, so I leave them turned up all the time. Then I picked up a 15 foot headphones extension wire. Cut it open and wired an audio pot to it. The pot has a really long handle so I was able to attach it just under my marquee sticking through the mdf. Attached a small knob to it and it works and looks great.
-
Nice thing about the Powermate is pushing on the top of it will mute the music. Didn't really think much of it when I bought the thing but it is really useful when the phone rings or something. :)
The functions of the unit are programmable as well, right down to speed of the pulsiing LED underneath it.
Most common cause of a hum in your sytem is a ground loop. If you're using home audio equipment it shouldn't be a problem.
-
Okay. Research continues.
-
Okay, just a couple of updates. 1) Received my LEDWiz from Randy this week.
2) Gutted the jukebox tonight. Kind of made me sick to rip those parts out, but I know the final result will do it justice. It looks as though everything will fit fine. Also, I was able to get the speaker grills off the left and right and it is really exciting to see what can be done in there. I can't wait to get my speakers in there and some rgb's in the lighting areas. I took the light lenses off, there are three on each side, and cleaned them with googone. They came out well and I'm pumped to get the lighting hooked up. All in all, it looks as though this project will be fairly simple. The most difficult thing is going to build the custom housing for the touchscreen.
Tomorrow I may go to Bestbuy and pick up the 2nd monitor for the center. Or I may mow the yard. It's toss up.
-
Damn.... it's a nice looking jukebox, except you need to find a way to squeeze in a few more speakers. ;)
-
Okay, I did get the jukebox completely gutted. Man that took forever! About a million screws to undue and twice that many wires. It was quite the scene. All in all, I'm very happy to say that all it should need is a good cleaning and a little paint here and there. I feel like I smoked a pack of cigarettes though, as the inside has permanent smoke damage.
On another note, I picked up the center monitor. It is a 21.6" Samsung lcd. Here is a link to the product page and a pic of the monitor:

Here are some pics from last nights work:
First, the crazy amount of parts that came out of this sucker:

Here is the area where the monitor is to go. The actual viewing size of the monitor is 18.375" x 11.5"'s. The actual area of the glass is 21.75" x 17".
13.875" is the actual total heighth of the monitor. I can either center it in the 17" area, or I have a couple ideas. Above that is the area where the beta brite is to go. I'll make a piece of plexi to cover that area and cut out what I need from behind.
Below the area where the second monitor is to go, is another glass area appx. 11.125" tall and 22.375" wide. I think it would be a great marquee area, but I could also see a killer light organ there.
Here is the speaker areas gutted. There are three places on each side for lighting. I plan on using Randy's RGB Boards and LEDWiz to power them. There was a flimsy shiny metal backing used for the lighting, but I'm going to look into diamond plating. Shiny!
-
Good thing you caught it before it got cancer. A couple of coats of paint should cover up the smell. Nice monitor.
-
Actually, Formula 409 (or similar) and a scrub brush will clean that up really well.
-
Thanks fellas! I plan on tackling the job tomorrow.
-
You need to put a lilliput screen where you were thinking of putting the betabrite so you can select songs. Simular to what dragnit has done on his first juke. Personally i thought that would be too small but he assures me it's fine.
-
damn lucky find man very nice shape.

Barry, the touchscreen is going on top. It's right at my wife's eye level and out of the reach of small children without a stool. There was a rounded thing on top that had me quite worried about fabricating something, but I found that it screwed right off. So, now that I have a nice flat surface, I just need to decide on the size of the touchscreen.
-
Gave the jukebox a good scrubbing today and dismantled all the glass, metal, etc, that will need to be removed for painting. I received the beta brite today and I'm excited about it. I think I'm going to decase it when mounting. I also think I'm just going to center the 22" monitor in the middle. Now to figure out what to do with that bottom window.......... :dunno
-
Nice find, watching with interest. Your basement is gonna kick butt.
-
Tonight: Brought home my jukebox components from OSU. i.e. speakers, computer, monitors, amp, etc.... So, I'm going to start going over what I've got, what I need, and how to make it all work together with this new setup. The cabinet is painted as well as the speaker grills, and I'm very happy with the results. It seemed to be exactly what the cabinet needed. Tomorrow I plan on picking up some plexi to begin constructing the bezel for the 22" monitor and the area where the betabrite will go. I've got an idea for the glass area below the monitor. I'll just have to see if I can make that happen.
-
I ordered the Griffin Powermate as well as a second LEDWiz and 12 RGB boards from Randy.
-
Okay, last update of the night. I had four 250 watt cerwin vega speakers to use for this project. I used the tweeters, woofers, and sub from two of them and just two of the woofers from the other two. I think it looks pretty solid. I had to predrill all new holes for the speakers. That was a blast. ::) The 12" subs didn't fit completely flush, so I'm going to make an extension ring with a little padding to fix the issue. Also, where the bottom 5" speaker would go, I'm thinking about putting those 6" electric balls there. Also, I was able to salvage the power amp from the speakers, so I just need to make a little housing for it and the speaker situation should be set. Here are the pics:

Here is that plasma ball I was talking about for the bottom speaker holes on the left and right.

-
I can't find a 6" version of the plasma ball anywhere. I can find 7" and 8" through google, but not the 6". :banghead:
-
Okay, I got the bottom area with the 12" subs done today. I also mounted the speaker hookups. Here are some pics for your viewing pleasure. :)
I used a 2" hole saw to drill the holes where the speaker hookups were to go. I used hot glue to seal the hole and hold it in place. Check out the size of the plug that came out! I thought it was gonna be about 1/2" deep. I also drilled a small hole right next to it to bring the wires back up through for the other speakers. I also used hot glue to seal the hole. I figured this would give everything a nice clean look as I can tuck the wires into a sleeve. I then put the 12" subs in. I used 1/4" foam around the outside of the speakers to make up for any gaps between the speakers and the housing. I forgot to take pictures of that, but it was pretty straight forward. I used a marker to outline the speaker, cut it out, and held it in place as I drilled the holes for the speakers.

Looking good sir.

I feel sorry for your neighbors. ;D

After getting the bottom done, I decided to do some more this evening since the newborn wasn't ready to clock out yet. So, I was sitting around checking out BYOAC and nothing new was going on so my mind wondered to the rgb's and LEDWiz I picked up from Randy and how I was going to mount them on the bottom of the jukebox. I thought and thought and nothing was really jumping out at me, because if you know what Randy's RGB setup looks like, and you knew I was dealing with 6 1" holes, it might cause some problems for you too. Anyways, I was just getting ready to cut some wood to hold them and as I picked up the metal yard stick, the idea just jumped out at me. So, without further ado, I introduce what may be the most unique mounting of Randy's RGB boards to date. I cut the yard stick to length, used some 1/4" thick foam and the hot glue gun again and this is the final results. Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to mount the same RGB setups in the 6 2" holes on the sides! :banghead:
Here is the six holes that are at the front top of the bottom speaker area. There used to be just regular bulbs there that did nothing special.
I marked the center of the holes on the yard stick, drilled out the width of the RGB, and here is what resulted.

Tonight I had the wonderful experience of completing the speaker wiring. Now I remember why I don't build these things left and right. I don't mind it so much, but it is tedious. It's all pretty now, and I've moved on to making the 2" plates for the RGB boards for the left and right sides. I cut 2.5" squares out of some 18 gauge metal, and I'm currently drilling the four corner holes in each of the six plates and the center hole for the rgb. They're not pretty, but they'll get the job done. I hope to get the LEDWiz wiring done tomorrow night. That would pretty much leave me with mounting the betabrite and the 22" monitor as the last two big tasks. Making the encasement for the touchscreen will be the biggest chore of all, but I'm not counting that yet so I don't go insane! :banghead:
EDIT: Forgot to mention that I took the speakers for a test drive, and they still kick butt after all these years. The wife was more than a little upset that I was rockin' the casba with the newborn sleeping upstairs. Sheesh.
-
Here are some pics of what I accomplished overnight. The first pic is just a sample of the speaker wire all buttoned up.

Here is one of the six pieces of metal I used to hold the RGB board. I told you it wasn't pretty:

I was able to get the RGB boards working from Randy with his software. Very cool. I also added a couple little bells and whistles. While test driving, I shot a 1/2 minute video showing some of the effects. Enjoy:

Last night, I was able to mount the 22" monitor. I used some thin aluminum to hold the monitor in place. I drilled holes in it to match the pattern on the back. Once I secured the two braces, I bent the aluminum around the contour of the monitor to the edge of the window bracket and used a self tapper in each of the four parts to connect it. I also used 3/32" plexi, marked where the monitor would be, and painted the outside area so that only the screen will be showing. The pics here are of the finished product from the outside, as I decided to secure the betabrite before taking those pics. I was in the zone last night, so the pics to second fiddle. Anyways, here are a couple different views of it and the beta brite. I'll take more pics later when I get the chance. Maybe I'll document how I'll make the plexi that covers the betabrite. :dunno

Thanks for the compliments fellas! Here are a couple pics of the straps that hold the monitor and plexi in place. I got lucky that the metal was so flexible. It made my life sooooo much easier. Oh, and it looked cool by accident.

I cut and painted the plexi for the betabrite area and while I was waiting on it to dry, I cut out rings for the lightning discs. Where they are going, they are about 1/2" short in diameter, so I took 1/4" foam board and with the use of a couple dishes around the house, I cut out the size I needed, and here are pics of that process. I have since painted them black and I'm now waiting for them to dry as well.

Wonderful news! I bought this touchscreen kit for the jukebox. After taking apart the lcd and hooking this up, I'm happy to report that it works great! This was the final piece of the puzzle as far as new tech was concerned. Now to build the housing for it. :banghead:

First update of the evening:
I was able to get the back of the lightning discs painted black so the behind the scenes won't be viewable. Here are a couple pics of that exciting process.
Where the betabrite plexi is to go, I decided to use 1/4" foam stripping to make up the gap between the beta brite and the plexi. Here are some pics of that process, the gluing of the plexi to the juke, and then finally a couple snaps of the whole project. The epoxy ate some of the paint at the top, but I plan on covering it with some decals.

In the video, there is a lighted square. Did you get that from Randy as well and/or is it also controlled with the LED wiz too?
Very cool indeed. Major bling.

I watch this thread knowing it's going to be cool no matter what you do with it. Gotta say though, that video makes me think that you will eventually have at least one house guest convulsing on the floor from some sort of nervous breakdown with that crazy light show! Can't wait to see your finish work on this one.

I bought that at Spencersgifts. I thought they would be a temporary fix for the bottom window, but once I got them in there and the tinted window did there thing, I'm very happy with the appearance.

Final update of the night. Here are some pics of the lightning discs finished and installed, with and without power. Also, I used those two squares and I was awful worried that they would stick out like a sore thumb. I used 1/4" foam board, which is a miracle worker for many applications, cut out the size I needed for the bottom window, mounted the boxes, sealed them with hot glue, and installed them with again, hot glue. With the tinted glass, I'm very happy with the results. I have been trying to get two separate companies to make me something special for that area, but they won't get back with me. :timebomb: Anyways, I'm completely content with what is there.

Thanks fellas! I've been test driving it for 24 hours now with Freebox and no problems as far as computer lock ups or software issues. I'm still trying to figure out the betabrite situation. I need to look into uninstalling the comm port and reinstalling it and see what happens. Stupid old ELO software. There's no uninstall options at all on it. I did delete the comm1 driver that elo had in the system32 folder, but still no dice.

MCcoy,
Very Very Nice! Great Job!
Where did you get the plasma squares?

another master piece  this juke is going to kick --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- :notworthy:

McCoy,
Can you give us a list of specs? Also did you use crossovers on the speakers?
The video doesn't show the ledwiz and your lights verywell!

just saw this thread. you officially suck dude. reason being...i showed my wife and told her that i would like to build one and she looked at me like i just told her that buying clothes at the GAP gives you cancer. :dunno
ah well, i at least get to watch you build this awesome juke.

If I show my wife this, I would totally get the go-ahead. Unfortunately, I have nowhere near the budget that McCoy has, so it won't happen. My budget Juke will have to suffice.

Poker was the golden egg for me. I had a good run last year that paid for all the toys. I didn't get rich, but I did get to make my last couple dream projects.
-
Man that thing ROCKS!!! I'm in the process of making one now. I did have one question. How do you plan on mounting the touch screen? On the video, it looks like it's just sitting there on the top. It was dark and kinda hard to see.
Keep up the great work!!

Thanks! I will be building a custom housing for the lcd. I've started my student teaching, so my time has been quite limited.

Finally, another update. I need to get a powerstrip ordered, but that's for another reply. Anyways, I haven't done much lately because of the touchscreen. I bought that 19" touchscreen add on for my lcd. It worked flawlessly decased, but once I put the case back on, it pinched the touchscreen and caused it to not work properly. Realizing that I would have find a different solution, I went outside and beat my head on a tree. I just came back in! :banghead:
Seriously, I had only planned on making a simple box to hold the monitor and when I went out to the garage to start cutting and routing, I found the original curved top to the jukebox. I had unbolted it as I thought it would be too difficult to integrate the touchscreen to it. I kept looking at it, and an idea just hit me. I figured if I could make a jig to hold it in place, I could route out the top. Well, here is the results. I still need to make the case for the monitor, but I'm quite excited that the routing came out so well. It should have a very nice finished look to it and may actually fool people into thinking that was how it came. (Yeah........right!)
Here is the jig I created out of some excess mdf. I brad nailed it together and clamped it to my table saw once I started routing:

I used my new drill press ( :woot ) to make the two access holes for the cables:

Looks great! I'm looking forward to see how the case for the monitor looks when it's finished. Are you going to keep it simple like a box frame or make a fancy looking photo type frame?
Keep up the great work.

I'm not quite sure yet. Just like that plastic piece, the environment typically takes over. I go out to the garage with one idea, and once I get out there, it all hits the fan. I'm going to try and get the front done tonight. I imagine that it will be plain though. :-[
-
Hooray! I woke up motivated today. :applaud: I was able to get the front and back of the touchscreen monitor housing built. I made it out of 1/2" birch.
Here is the front and back ready to be sliced up:
I marked on the inside of the front the bottom lip and then I drew the visible part of the touchscreen on the wood:
Here is the front after I used a jigsaw to rough cut the opening and after I used a flush trim bit to clean it up. I also sanded the inside edges with 220 sand paper:
I used this 1/2" rabbit bit to counter sink the monitor into the front piece. I just kind of lucked out that the monitor was 1/2" long on each edge:

Here is the front after the rabbiting:
Next, I used a dado set on the table saw to cut a 5/16" channel around the top and the sides of the front and back to make the box as seamless as possible. Here are some pics of the setup and the final cut:

Hopefully I can get the box completed tomorrow!

Man you have all the tools and the skills, this is looking totally awsome dude.
-
Thanks! I squared out the corners where the monitor goes today. I would like to get the sides done tonight if possible.

Just reviewed the whole thread. Great effects on your juke. It is too bad we cannot hear the quality of the audio because it has to rock. Looking forward to the finish in awe.

MAN! how did i miss this thread. very nice indeed!. your light show has got me thinking as im currently remodeling my JB. hmmm.
-anyways xtreme awsome build, theres just one word for this JB,....swasome!. (sweet n awsome) :applaud:

Minor update. As I like to think to myself,"One small step for the rest of BYOAC, one giant leap for mccoy178." :dunno Anyways, I finished putting the putty on the touchscreen housing tonight. (Last night I broke the touchscreen overlay in half. I'm still crying inside.) On other news, I gutted the juke again to finish construction holes and wire everything properly. In doing so, I decided to finish a small task that was driving me crazy. The power button on the 22" monitor was always pressed in since it was smushed against the front glass. So, here is a little pictorial on how I fixed that.
Here was the initial problem. The button was constantly pushed in by the plexi:
Here's what I saw with the back removed. It looked promising:
I looked at the back and tried to figure out what to do:
I ended up flipping the power button over, cutting off the edge so it would fit and drilling a new hole. I decided to just flip it because it had a ground on it that touched the lcd directly, and I didn't want to mess with that:
I decided that asthetics weren't important in this application, so I just drilled out a hole big enough for my finger:
And here is what it looks like reinstalled to the face of the jukebox:

Well, I got the better of myself this past week. I had planned on making the enclosure for the touchscreen a wooden box. I spent probably 10 hours on that from the start of it. Well, I was showing the project to a buddy and he pointed out that it didn't look right with the rest of the jukebox. That started my motivation for something different. Then, as an omen, I was working on a handrail and I knocked the box off of its shelf as the putty on it was drying. As I glued the three chunks back together, I decided I wasn't happy with it. So, I went to the plastic store in Columbus where I have bought my other plastic in the past, and picked out some scraps. To keep a long story long, I did not document the making of the outside edge and the inside cutting of the monitor, so to make up for that, I made a full tutorial on how I countersunk the grill in the back piece and a couple pics of how I countersunk the monitor on the front piece.
I would like to start off with saying; if you have the funds, pick up a 1hp hand router, it is a great tool. I wish I woulda had this for my previous projects, as it has made my life much easier. It has the strength to get the job done, but not too much to rip it out of my hands. I also used a plunge router on this project:
I first sized up the vent. It was a speaker grill from a dynamo cabinet I had awhile back:
I squared up the grill and traced it onto the paper. I next drew up what to cut out, route out, and where to drill the holes. I free handed the holes with the hand router:
Here is a pic of the walnut I used for a guide board. I used a couple 3" clamps that worked great:
Here is the hole cut out:
Here is the edge countersunk:
Here are some pics of the finished product. I was surprised to find out the plexi was actually frosted on one side. Kind of a neat bonus for the back:

For the front, I used 1/2" frosted plexi for the front. I don't have many pics for the construction of this, I do have the following:
Here is a pic of the 1/2" rabbiting tool I used to cut out the countersink. Before I did that, I put a 1/4" roundover on the front side. Can't wait to polish that up! :banghead:
Here are some random pics of the front with the monitor sitting in it. Yes, everything is in the kitchen still. :dizzy: :

Well, this is easily the longest reply I've ever made. I'm open to ideas on how to light this thing. Actually, I would appreciate ideas.
-
Wow, that looks great. 1/2" and 3/4" plexi is fun to work with for sure.
Is that bezel frosted? What type of effect are you looking for? We use to etch logos and images on plexi and light it up with a strip of neon. To control the light we would tape of the neon tube leaving just a strip of it exposed shining a thin, wide beam across the surface which would light up the etched area.
-
Very cool. Where are you guys getting the thick frosted/colored plexi?
-
Mountain, I don't know what effect I'm looking for yet. My brain hasn't gotten that far.
javeryh, I picked up that material at a plastics specialty store in their scraps section. On the paper in big letters it said, "Tony, STOP! Wrong side!" and had a nice 3/8" rabbit all the way around it. I just had to use a flush trim bit to get that off and it was good as new.
-
You could get some cool lighting effects with some LEDs in the bottom of that plexi. Maybe use the RGB LEDs and LEDWiz from GroovyGameGear.
-
Very cool. Never thought of making a bezel out of plexi, and I've never seen the frosted stuff before.
That would be great for door inserts on kitchen cabinets, etc.
As for lighting it, maybe some LED strips from behind?
If you light from the bottom the area above the monitor won't get lit.
-
Okay, I've decided to use aluminum diamond plating behind the speakers. One side is done and a full pictorial should be out tonight or tomorrow night at the latest.
-
Well, no pictorial tonight, but here are some pics. I really wasn't impressed with the old stuff that was in there. It did clean up nice, but it was flimsy and you can see how it wavered. Here are a few different looks with both the old and the new installed and some closeups of the new. So, what do you guys think?

-
HEAVY! Big improvement.
I suggest you run some EL wire or something similar around the inside of those enclosures.
Maybe attach it to the back of the grilles so you don't see the wire, just a nice blue glow on the diamond plate.
-
I will most certainly look into the possibilities!
-
the diamond plate adds a lot of class. GOOD JOB! Very impressive.
Heck now I want to do one, but my wife would divorce me if I don't finish my arcade cab first.
-
As Knievel mentioned, light from LED's on the bottom probably will not make it all the way around the top rounds of the bezel. If the top were flat, and the corners radius are large, it would work better. You can always wire up 5 to 10 LED's and tape them against the bottom to see. If that doesn't work you might consider projecting light from the back. Perhaps a 2 inch shelf along the back, with a row of LED's projecting up.
In the speaker pockets, you could also use LED rope or even Christmas tree (or Halloween) lights stapled against the front surface, pointing in.
Looks cool.
-
NIVO gave me the idea of having musical notes etched in the back and lighting those with some rgb's. I don't know if that is possible, so I was thinking about making three musical notes on either side of the touchscreen, placing them inside and using Randy's rgb's and hooking them up to the Ledwiz's. I'm also considering making the sides of the touchscreen enclosure out of diamond plating to tie it in with the rest of the juke. In light of Allroys update to his thread, I'm also investigating the idea of making the musical notes rotate in place inside the enclosure. Suggestions?
-
Okay, so here is the pictorial on how I cut the diamond plating. It took 3 hours from start to finish, and an additional hour putting everything back together. (I took my time on that part). Here are my tools: Marker, double sided tape, painters tape, a jigsaw, a grinder, a pair of shop glasses, and a drill press. I used metal blades in the jigsaw. Here are a few pics of the tools:
Okay, so first thing I did was draw on the old material the outline of the speakers and light organs. This was to ensure I didn't cut outside my boundaries. I then used the old material as a template for the aluminum:
Here is what the speaker housing looked like blank:
Here is the aluminum sheet. I picked this up at Lowe's, but if you can find any metal company around, I would go there. I could've bought a 4'x12' sheet for what I paid for this 2'x4' at Lowe's. :banghead:
I used painters tape on the front, as it was suggested to keep the burrs down. I'll tell you what it was really handy for, was that it kept the aluminum off the blade so I was able to use one blade for that whole side. When I cut the first side, I went through 6 because of aluminum melting and gumming up the blades. :banghead:
So once I had it traced, I cut out the outside edge of the piece. I then used the grinder to fine tune the edges so it fit perfect. After that, I drilled pilot holes on the inside so I could get the jigsaw in there:
Here is the completely cut piece. That painters tape was a miracle worker for me. Saved a ton of stress I went through with the first piece:
Here are some final pics from a couple different setups. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have on this. I've built a few machines, and this stuff was very new and I had to google and ask Knievel for some advice before I decided to do it:

Jigsaw eh? Damn, I didn't know that would work. Everytime I've cut metal with a jigsaw, it wasn't very good results.
Nice work.
-
Aweeeeesome build this 8) Ive managed to miss it so far up to now some how ??? Wish I had seen the work along the way but ive just had a good long read of the thread and your doing some awesome work! Keep it up! :D
-
Thanks fellas. I thought the amateur pictorial would be good for us weekend hobbyist, (or 5am Tuesday night hobbyist), because I as well didn't think a jigsaw would remotely work as well as it did. Now that I do, it opens many doors for using metal on various projects.
-
Awesome job!!! Can't wait to see the finished result. :applaud:
-
metal rules(yep im biased) :applaud:

Yup, I built some 1/8" diamond plate skid plates for my 4-wheeler a few years ago with a jig saw (and aluminum rivets)
Worked well. Great job!
Go Bucks!!

Tonight I made the bottom plating for the subwoofer area. I'm either getting much better at my work, or I was extremely lucky to get all four holes perfect with just measurements. I do believe a large amount of luck is involved. I typically have a hole an inch off any other time I try something like this. Anyways, here are some pics:

The diamond plate has added a whole new level of bling to the project. Seeing it behind the speaker grill just screams "professional job".
-
Yeah, I have to concur - excellent looking job. :applaud:
-
Looking awsome dude... Hopefully i can start on mine next week, however it will not be anywhere near the level of your beast.
-
...I'm either getting much better at my work, or I was extremely lucky to get all four holes perfect with just measurements. I do believe a large amount of luck is involved. I typically have a hole an inch off any other time I try something like this.
It might have something to do with the amount of time and money you have invested. I tend to pay more attention and measure 3 times when there is a lot on the line.
When cutting aluminum, the trick is to find a good speed. Too slow and you do more rubbing than cutting, melting the chips. Too fast and you break the blade. There is definitely a sweet spot.
Glad to hear you've got a new media to work with. Very classy.

Okay, so I've been working on something neat for the front of the jukebox and kind of put the touchscreen box on the backburner since I couldn't make my mind up. Well, I got an idea while doing the diamond plating for the speakers that I wanted to use on the box. I just didn't know how I could make it look right. So, I thought about it for a few days and I decided to just do it. I used a metal break to cut the aluminum and another metal tool to bend it into a half circle. From there I just busted out the router again and went to town. Without further ado, I present another small step in the production of the jukebox.
I think this will really help tie the plexi in with the rest of the project, as it was sticking out, and not in a good way in my opinion.

Thanks for the great documentation of the project. I'm sure you are inspiring many to take on a jukebox project (myself being one of them). I kept sending links to Melissa last night showing her your progress and she thinks it is very cool as well. That bezel you have made is very innovative, to say the least. This jukebox is one for the ages and will be hard to top.
Anyway, keep up the push. Seems like there is light at the end of the tunnel now.
I know Sam, the Tuesday night hobbiest has got to be smiling. :notworthy:

You can find Luminglas plates which are 6" and have the same lightning effect.
Here is a picture of one...
-
unbelievable! :o
Awesome work dude.

Tonight I took the template piece, (the original front that I had broken), and began the testing phase of lighting and gluing. Here are some pics of the real box sitting loose in its home and then the template with how I did it and just a single led shining from the back. I plan on using a completely different method to light it, but this at least gave me an idea of how it was going to look.

Thought I would also mention that the front face is glazed, causing the blurryness in the pics above. In person, the notes are crystal clear.
-
With most of the Plexiglas painted, you have more LED mounting options. How bright is in daylight?
Looks nice.
-
It's nice in the daylight. My plan is to take more of the 1/2" frosted, cut 2"x2" squares, paint all sides but the front black, mount an rgb to the bottom, and use those to light each individual note. The rgb's will be hooked into the LEDWiz's to work in conjunction with the other rgb's on the juke. When everything is off, the entire box should look black.
-
Well, I'm still working out some details on the lighting things, so I decided to focus some attention on the final cabinet parts. I ordered a plate and connections for the karaoke microphones and the exterior usb and firewire ports. I ordered it from http://www.datapro.net/ (http://www.datapro.net/). I plan on putting this plate inside the coindrop area. I didn't know what I was going to do with that area, but I think it will be neat to have the microphones in there also. I'm going to now research a "protected" power button to mount right above it. I love this thing. ;D

Long overdue update.
1. I painted the front face of the monitor housing. I was going to paint it on the inside, but I couldn't figure out how to get everything mounted without using the inside of the front. I used painters tape, measured everything out, and cut the notes out with an exacto knife. I was pretty happy with everything. I also chose metallic silver over the black. Chicks dig it.

After a couple days, I finally figured out how I could mount the monitor. The acrylic adhesive is ridiculously strong as I guess it melts the two pieces together. So, since I couldn't thread anything into the plexi, I used cam bolts, similar to what is in your typical cheap furniture, and it worked out great. I made a little jig on my drill press and just went to town. I also made the standoffs for the back.

Today, I received the plate for the usb hookups and the microphones. The plate was missing one of the 1/4" holes, so while I await the replacement, I used the one they sent to get it installed. Here is a pretty self explanatory pictorial.

I was able to get the sides adhered to the front and drilled the holes in the back of the monitor box. Here's just a couple random pics.

The diamond plate really ties the upper monitor to the bottom section. Very nice.
-
That's looking awsome dude... I should be able to get some more work done on mine tonight. Some parts arrived for me at work today.
-
That's one hell of a bezel you made. Great job!
-
Oh man. I just finished getting the musical notes wired up. It really tied the whole thing together. I need to diffuse the light a little and spread it out about another half inch, then it will be perfect. It looks cool as is, but with a little diffusion, it won't be so bright and it will have a very uniform covering of the notes. Man I love it! :applaud:
-
I don't have pics of the lighting in action yet, but I do have pics of the construction of the led housings. Enjoy!
Here is a divider/support that went between the musical notes. I painted them black and drilled them out get them ready for the cam locks.

I also made the 1/4" plexi that actually holds the led's next. I also drilled out for the bolts and counter sunk them.

Here it is with the led's hot glued into place.

Well, while I wait for video footage of the new lighting in action, I have decided to make the new Betabrite area. Here are some pics of the almost completed section. I have yet to hear back about an 1 1/2" trackball for the right side, so the paper stays on until I get that. Otherwise, enjoy the candy:
Here is the front and back:

I also countersunk the Griffin Powermate volume control about 5/16". I love the look and it came out real clean:

Here's a pic just showing that it doesn't go all the way through. Once I get the thing apart, I plan on running the wire through the back. I need to PM whammoed and find out how he did it.
Now to the betabrite section. It is just sitting loose for now, so it may be a little off in the pics. I cut out the center first, put a 1/4" round over on the face, then I put a 1/4" rabbit on the back for the smoked plexi. This betabrite is one of the $100 ones from Netcat.

Although I'll probably not end up using the led due to painting, it did look cool with the lights off:

So why are you adding a trackball to it?
-
Because I need to access the second monitor from time to time and I hate lifting up the front to get to a mouse. I figured once freebox is running, it will be useless anyways, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
-
looks really good so far, can't wait to see the lights in action
nice work
-
Okay, here are a couple of prelimanary vids of the new lighting. I'm still trying to find a diffuser to make them perfect, but to the naked eye, they look pretty solid. I can't find a camera that can capture the light properly in the dark.

I just keep a wirless keyboard an mouse handy for mine, however you always like to go the extra mile or 10.
-
To be honest, I have no issues with that idea, but I was thinking about long term, and I just don't want to mess with lifting the lid or batteries down the road. But I do agree with you about what a pain it is.
-
You really need to upgrade that skin dude, i suggest either the Black and Blus skin or the Black and Red. The videos look pretty sweet though.
-
Will do. I just finished routing out the touchpad area. I'm going to try and figure out how to mount everything later this evening.
-
Look forward to some updates on monday then :D
-
Hopefully I'll have them up tonight! All the routing is done, I just need to paint the plexi and then figure out how I'm going to mount it.
