I have to agree that Robotron on anything other than a couple of nice Wico's is the SUCK.  Even short shaft Wico's are decent,  but the 4" is the bee's knees...

I'm implying that it's real likely the general usage of these words is not vernacular, but actual. As in, people can't spell. But it's worse than that - they actually don't really know what the word is, because they mostly learned english growing up on IM and text chat.

Of course, there are 'converts' - people who are old enough to know better but have been swept up in such cultural distortions.

So, no, now they'll be upset.   <shakes hair in the light, adorning breeze>

I guess I'll ad to the topic...um, some: I bought two repros for this kind of circumstance, but haven't gotten round to hooking 'em up. Guess I should move that up some....

Did you mean to incorrectly spell the word "add" in a post lamenting that other people can't spell?

Typos are not mis-spellings. One is an error in physical execution or mentation, or simple negligence. Mis-spellings of the kind I intimated are due to naivete/ignorance (though don't mistake that I'm implying 'stupidity').

No. Technically, I'm correct. Yours is a colloquial use that has been absorbed into common use, and of course even dictionaries are subject to cultural amendment.

You mean using the word AD as in ADVERTISEMENT instead of the word ADD as in ADDITION wasn't done due to naivete/ignorance on your part?

I find that misspellings are much less irritating as the reader than when people misuse AD/ADD, TO/TOO,  THERE/THEIR/THEY'RE, etc...

All three are descended from Old English "yeh sohk", which translates to "your shaft is too short".

I constantly subconciously substitute words that are phonetically similar. I've been typing my thoughts for way too many years now, the fingers act before the brain. It's quite annoying and as a result people probably think I'm a dumbass with bad grammar.

@RayB, I am a "dumbass with bad grammar" as well, but I seem to be decent when it comes to good grammar. I even know how to use colons and tightly pressed semi-colons. And some may say I am very proficient in the use of such "objects of grammar"...

Your belief might be founded. I didn't think ya would, no.  kee kee kee kee

Incidentally, the following would've been more cogent:  you'll have to elaborate on that within this circumstance to enlighten me.

A thesaurus is nice to have around idn'it? Or google if you're like me.

In junior high, I got both a dictionary and thesaurus for christmas. It was implicit to me that both were necessary in writing endeavours and such.

I used the thesaurus in looking for a word that I felt might be appropriate for the circustance, or more appropriate than the one I'd already had in mind. Which of course then I'd go and look it up in the dictionary to make sure it was precisely what I wanted.

In more recent times, I've used thesauruses to find a word I've had in mind that I haven't been able to remember. That is, I've looked at words I've thought are similar as pathways to that word. Then, if I've found it, I've gone to the dictionary to check on it.

Of course, since '02, I haven't used a physical set of texts.

  • "christmas" should be "Christmas"
  • "endeavours" should be "endeavors" unless you were attempting British English
  • "circustance" should be "circumstance" I believe

I purposefully don't use capitals on such things as holidays, to intimate a lack of importance in them to me - and perhaps in general.

Such things as 'endeavours' are an intention of british flavour. Though without the brogue. Grok than one.

That last one is past its due.

Are we still having fun?

It's spelled "Venn diagram" although with your aversion to capital letters I suppose you might spell it "venn diagram."
