Lightgun and trackball
« on: September 28, 2009, 01:03:30 am »
I'm looking to get a lightgun. What is known to be the best one? I never look into trackballs. Does any trackball work which all games? Whats a good one?

Lightguns are up in the air right now.  ultimarc just released a new light gun, but people have only had them for a few days, so it's hard to say how they are working.  as for trackballs, any trackball should work with any trackball game.  i personally like the Ulimarc UTrak because it easily mounts in a 3/4" wood panel., and looks really nice when lit up

Yeah, there's never a good time to ask about lightguns. I'm still trying to figure out the AimTrak and Andy is doing what he can on the software/firmware side of things. Right now, the AimTrak hasn't been tested by the public enough to be recommended, plus it's still evolving. The TopGun has its problems, as does the Act Labs gun. The Wiimote, to my knowledge, isn't much of an option.

I say wait and see what the general concensus is on the AimTrak.

The original Namco GunCon2 controller works fine with WinGun drivers.  However, it's not the easiest thing in the world to set up.  If the AimTrak works the way it sounds like it could, it will be the best way to go.  But, as Ginsu said...it's too early to recommend that option.  If you MUST have something today, get a GunCon2 and the WinGun drivers.  If the AimTrak works well enough, you can always modify that gun to use it when things are mature!

what kind of monitor are you using?  the guncon 2 only works with CRT monitors, not LCDs

Good point.  I forgot that some people are starting to use LCD's instead of CRT based monitors.

i'd wait a little while.  the aimtrak seems very promising, but it just came out, so naturally there are a few bugs with it...the good news is that Andy is on top of it and i have complete faith that he will get them worked out.  I'd just hold on for a little while until things are smoothed out and we can get an accurate description of how they actually work.

the top guns apparently work OK, but you have to stand pretty far from the screen

What is the status on lightgun options for 64-bit OS?

I think AimTrak is the only one that will have true 64-bit drivers.  All other options AFAIK are only 32-bit or compatibility mode.  I don't think Andy has released the 64-bit version on the web site yet (based on comments in the other thread).
