I thought the latest versions of Mala had this fixed, but I still can't seem to get my console previews working.  I updated my mala version off the webiste last week and I have the xvid codec that's linked on the wiki freshly installed.  Do I need a diff codec for the divx movies?  I thought I read somewhere to make sure divx is uninstalled before installing the xvid codec, which I did.

I have my previews directly over my snaps, and here is what I am seeing.  Some of the videos work, and consistently.  Then for some, the snap will flash very briefly and then that area of the screen will go black (the color of my background) and you will be able to hear the audio from the movie but not see anything.  The problem games also slow my scrolling dramatically.  All videos play fine in media player.

Any thoughts on this???

Thanks!

off hand... if mala uses directshow codecs like virtually every other fe out there then the culplrit is the codecs installed on your system.  Hearing music but not seeing video is the very definition of the wrong codec being used.  You can test this by downloading a straight avi file (no divx or anything) and trying it in mala... if it works then it's the codecs.

    • Arcade, mame, retro... and the gp2x.

Try installing / re-installing the xvid codecs:

http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html

I've had the divx w/o xvid before and they all seem to play the movies at emumovies.com just fine in MALA.

Glad to see that I am not the only one with this problem. Even though I use mamewah I like to try mala as a possible alternate. My solution to this problem was to convert the console videos to xvid. This increased their playability to 98%. Still not perfect but much better.

Thanks for all the ideas.  I think I'll mess around with these codecs a bit more before I try and convert them to xvid, that sounds like a lot of work.  I'd really appreciate it if someone knows which one I'll need for these console Divx previews.  Sometimes I feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark when it comes to codecs...

I'm having exactly the same problem.  Works fine for MAME and Nintendo 64.  Others it is intermittent.  On Atari 2600 most have the same issue - black screen and sound for about 10 seconds, then the video kicks in.  However, some on some of the Atari 2600's it works fine.  Still setting up other emulators, but Geneis seems to have the black screen as well.

I believe I have the latest codec installed.  I will try the advice above and reinstall and see if that works.

search for & download the "k-lite" codec pack for winXP, if that is what you are using.  Install this and it will include the codecs you need.

Hi All,
I have tried every single codec pack out there with different computers and it is always the same result, sound but delayed or no video. Converting to xvid was the only option that produced any real results. Mamewah plays all the videos fine, so the problem has to be with the way that Mala handles the video. This is just my rookie point of view.

Have you guys tried installing/reinstalling the latest version of Media Player. There are a few windows media codecs that as far as I know are still only available by installing Media Player 11. This probably isn't related to your problem, but this is Windows were dealing with and you're just as likely to fix problems with it with voodoo chants as your are with troubleshooting.

I'm happy to report that this worked.  Thanks for the info.  All videos now load immediately in Mala.

Still struggling with this.  Can one of you K-lite guys post a link to the actual site you downloaded yours from.  I noticed there are like a thousand of them and the one that I thought was the 'official' site wants you to join some bs and pay for the dload.  Also, did you change any of the default settings or do anything else to get it to work other than uninstalling all other codecs?  Sorry to be so high maintenance...

Google this for download locations:

"k-lite" codec pack xp

I think that version 3.4.5 is the latest as I'm posting.

Crap, that's the one I've been trying.  I even found the 'mega' version and it still didn't work.   I saw it suggested elsewhere to update directX and that didn't seem to do anything either.

 :hissy:

I guess I'll search for a batch converter...

As I recall, as you install k-lite there are a bunch of different codecs for you to choose from.  Make sure you go through the list and tick any that look like DivX, and whatever else you think you want.  Best I can suggest anyway ....  :dunno

Just an update on this if anyone else is having this same problem...  The bad news is I never did get the divx previews to work, no matter which codec I tried.  Not sure how or why.  The good news is I found a really nice batch converter with a free 15 day trial.  With a little bit of perseverance, that turned out to be enough time to get the whole emu movies set converted to xvid.  They now work like a charm with Mala but are a little more than twice the file size which luckily didn't matter for me but make sure you have enough space before trying this.  Here is the program I used:

I've always been a fan of FFDshow, very clean install and uninstall and will allow playback of most any mpeg4 stuff with no settings tweeking.

I updated the video part of the FAQ and a few sections on the Mala config page under Other Emu config.  I've used that wiki a ton so it is nice to be able to give a little back!

Did you try an older version? ffdshow-20051129.exe seems to be the one that works best in GameEx.

Uninstall MS Mediaplayer. Instal only Xvid codec and Vlc player. Run all your emumovies trough Prism Video Converter. Set the Prism converter on  XVID codec 4 and avi. This makes your Emumovies work straight away with no load time. I dont know what the emumovie guy has done to the format of his movies but theres something not right.
