MAME menu popping up in games

I've been trying to figure this issue out, but I can't seem to find the solution. Its mainly on my side scroller beat-ups (Simpsons, TMNT, TMNT Turtles in Time, X-Men, etc), after a while, the MAME menu tab pops up. I've programmed the menu to the tab key, and disabled everything else. The issue is still occurring though. Any ideas?

Sounds like a ghosting problem. What are you using for your encoder?
