A mixture of questions to finish my CP and cab
« on: July 26, 2009, 01:43:47 pm »
So, I'm almost finished... my CP has all the electronics installed and I'm ready to wire.  Just a few questions that don't all relate (sorry):

1.  For my NovaGems, they all need 5V that I'll be supplying via USB (the documentation says the LEDWiz can support up to 24 buttons using USB power) - will it be sufficient to use 22gauge wire with the terminal strip and daisy-chain the power connections (see picture)?  The 22gauge wire just seems really thin and whispy - wondering if I should go with a thicker gauge.

2.  I have the NovaMatrix Marquee light which requires a 5V power source and a Happ 3" lighted trackball that requires 12V.  A stripped Molex can provide both 5V and 12V (depending on wire color) but can I use a single Molex plug to provide power to both marquee light and trackball or should I use 2 different molex plugs?

3.  I can't seem to find anything to attach the trackball grounding pair (two green wires) to - I'm assuming this is to dissipate static electricity but I don't have any real good option - would soldering a wire to it and then daisychaining that wire into the grounding daisychain for the pushbuttons work?  Overkill?

Thanks, all!  This has been a real learning experience for me and I really can't believe I'm almost done!!

Jim

I can help with 2 and 3.  You can use a single molex and just pull whatever power you need.  I just used a splitter to make managing the wires easier (and I had a spare).

Just ditch the trackball ground wire.  It is not needed.  I have ran it in my cab for over 3 years and no problems with trackball grounding.

22ga wire will be fine, the currents they'll be handling is very low..
really the only thing you have to ask your self is this wire to thin to work with.. IE: break on your while working on the panel, conductivity it's fine.
Anyone got change for a dollar?
PLEASE HELP NEED Fastmame .70 and .9* releases

I have the NovaMatrix Marquee light which requires a 5V power source and a Happ 3" lighted trackball that requires 12V.

The NovaMatrix requires 12V, not 5V. You can certainly use one molex though; if you purchased the wire harness with the NovaMatrix, it just splits out 5V and 12V lines from a single molex.

For the grounding wire on the track ball, I ran a wire to one of the screws that mounts the power supply to the computer case. I attached it using a ring terminal and also used a M/F spade terminal inline so I could move the computer without looking for a screwdriver. The cage of the power supply will always be grounded.
