LEDs in a RFM?
« on: July 11, 2009, 09:28:19 am »
Has anyone had an experience with replacing the bulbs with LEDs? If so are you happy with the results? What companies specialize in kits for pins?

Thanks

You can but the diagnostics will report them all as failed.

BC's Pinball (www.bcspinball.com) sells LED kits for RFM.

*Supposedly* they won't appear as burnt out in the diagnostics, but IDK. :dunno

This is the best place to order LEDs.

BC's LEDs are fantastic. I've used several different brands of them, and BC's are the brightest. With that said, you do pay a premium for the BC's LEDs. Places like www.cointaker.com are quite a bit cheaper, but their LEDs don't pop quite as well.

BCS pinball is just reselling Super Brite LEDs that you can buy yourself, FWIW.

Yeah, this is true. A lot of people are just looking for a plug and play kit solution, however. Plus, it's probably worth the extra cost for most people to get the LED encased in the frosted bulb or the flasher bulb.

Well look at that.

I'll be placing some fairly large order to replace my backbox bulbs. LEDs look A LOT better in backboxes than incandescent bulbs do and they're safer for the translites and backglasses. I'm also going to replace all my flashers with LEDs. Those look great.

EDIT: Actually I don't think he's reselling those bulbs, because there's no profit in it unless he's getting a very nice price cut from them. Considering the volume he does, he's probably just using the same supplier and not reselling anything.

BCS provides terrible customer service, I have had a lot of problems dealing with them in the past.

Cointaker is a personal friend of mine, when I shop there, I shop at his house. Lives 15 mins away from me.  ;)

Still all and all, Pinball Life's LEDs are the brightest in my opinion. I buy my insert lights from him and all my frosteds from Cointaker.

I will never buy from BCS again.

At one point, BCS was quite a bit higher than Super Brite.  IIRC, BCS was pumping RGP full of crap about their custom engineered product, blah blah blah, and I put up a post asking "why is this other place so much cheaper?".  Instantly chopped their profit margin, as they lowered their prices and blamed some website mistake.

Anyway, I've got 3 LEDs in my World Cup Soccer pop bumpers.  They're kinda neat.  I've got a handful of remaining LEDs I'll never use... if someone here wants to kick me a few bucks I'd love to get rid of them.  Probably not worth messing with, though.

What ones do you have? I'd probably buy frosted LEDs for backboxes. I need to do about 4 games, so I'm looking to buy them up where I can find them right now. Also, considering your asking price I may want other types for inserts.

Would they sell to you again?   ;)

Just razzing you, I was never impressed by their german engineers specially designed these LEDs just for pinball routine, especially when it was an off the shelf part.

Nope... Principal.
