Old Stinky Cab Smell....
« on: July 07, 2003, 11:55:13 am »
I have a Gorf Cab that is in good shape.  I cleaned it all up but it still has an "old" cab smell.   How do you get rid of the smell?  Any Ideas?

It's probably mildewed to the core (if that's the smell you are talking about and not just "old wood" or cigarette smoke.)  I'd start with some disinfectant (the more pleasant smelling the better).  And then maybe a good "airing out" if that's possible.

Other than that, the only thing I could suggest is fresh coat of sealer to trap the odor inside.  Of course then it would smell like fresh paint :).

Take as many electronics out of it as you can and give it a succession of complete interior lysol baths.  Then, if it's sunny in the summertime where you are, leave it open in the sun for a few days.  If that doesn't kill the smell, try a mesh bag of cedar chips.

Golly, I feel like Martha Stweart.  Anybody got any good stock tips?

After the above - just put some of those arm & hammer odor 'breathe throughs' that are so handy for those smelly science experiments in the fridge....("I know the ham is half-green, but we can't kill it now- it's almost sentient!")

Thanks Guys I will try all of the above except for paint.  I already painted the outside.  The inside is where it stinks though! DOH!

Isn't an open box of baking soda placed inside good for absorbing odors too?

I got some 'Neutradol' in the supermarket (small tub, odour eating gel inside), opened it and left it inside the cabinet. Worked a treat.
