Playing videos in Virtual Jukebox
« on: July 01, 2003, 11:52:37 am »
Does anyone here use dual monitors in their juke that is running Virtual Jukebox?  I'm considering using 2 LCD monitors in my next project in order to display a video on one monitor while a song is playing.  My collection of over 500 videos is constantly growing and a dual monitor juke would be an awesome showcase.

So, anyone using dual monitors w/ Virtual Jukebox to display videos while songs are playing?  I'm interested in hearing how the performance is and any issues to be aware of.

Thanks,

Rick

I'm using 2 monitors on my project (construction phase).  I've seen no performance issues so far in testing.  My main complaint is that most video's that I have downloaded are of poor quality.  And in my experience so far, 99%of the time the second monitor is lifeless with the VJ badge on it (mainly because I have a bunch of mp3's and only a few ..10.. or so videos).  You can do song lyrics on the second monitor but there is no way I'm taking the time to download lyrics for my 3000+ songs.

So I'm going with 2 crt monitors.  But unless you have a bunch of high quality videos or want to download lyrics till you can't see straight... I wouldn't spend the money on 2 lcd screens.

I wish VJ would show a large screen shot of the albumn currently playing on the second screen.  That would make it lively.  The second screen is a little "static" in the current incarnation.

Sounds like you're right about using CRT over LCD monitors.  But my issue would be minimizing depth and weight if I go for a wall mounted juke.  Is your project floor or wall?

Currently I have about 400+ videos in my collection.  Some are obivously better quality than others, but mostly they are quality rips or captures.  I have a LOT of VH1 Classics videos,  so those are perfect for this project.

I was staring at my Rowe-AMI last night and really examining the insides.  I realized that I could easily remove the CD playlist/cover mechanism and would have room for two monitors inside.  Not certain if CRT monitors would fit, but two LCDs certainly would.  Modifying that jukebox would be ideal since it's a killer sound system and has the spinning, lit CDs on display in the cab, etc.  But my logic for selling it and building the wall mount was mainly to regain that floor space.  I'm going to be getting a pool table, and would like maximum clearance all around it.  I'll have to really measure and see if the juke on the floor would be in the way at all, etc.

If you have a highspeed net connection, you'll want to start downloading videos from Usenet.   Look for alt.binaries.music.videos for starters.  Then just do some batch leeching and get your video collection going.    :)

My project is a retrofit of a Rowe 84 (I think that was the model number.. I could be wrong).  It is alot like PlanetJay's.  It does take up a bunch of floor space :).  I am putting in 2 17" monitors in mine.  It is really tight but it will fit.  I'm not sure how I am going to power the speakers yet.  my initial idea was to put my stereo amp in it and just power external speakers.  Now I'm leaning toward a self contained unit..
