MaLa Hardware, Where?- LCD Display
« on: April 16, 2009, 12:04:36 pm »
Hi,

I'd like to know how to use a 2x24 lcd display in Mala. How could I buy a MaLa Hardware? Can I mod a LedWiz? Where can I get the chip IO-Warrior-40p?

Best regards

I tried to find info on this, too, but to no avail. The MaLa hardware seems like such an elegant solution to my lighting problems.

MaLa hardware is not avaliable at the moment. If enough demand is shown I could see if the manufacturer was interested in main more

Alaternatives:

LED:

1) Use a PacDrive for native MaLa support

2) Use a LedWiz

Loadman,

How can I make it?

Should I buy the Kit IO-Warrior-24 or just the chip?
Does it work only with the kit-IO-Warrior-24 or I also need a LedWiz?

Thank you

Loadman,

How can I buid it?

It works only with the kit-IO-Warrior-24 or also needs LedWiz?

Thank you

If you buy a LedWiz then you only need to buy the replacement Chip to make it work.
Note: You Need a IO warrior 40 chip to fit into a Ledwiz (Not a 24)

If you buy the Kit the building is much more complex as you need extra components to make it work. But hey, I did it so It's can not be that hard.

Well,

I was speaking to  Groovygamegear support and this is what they have said:

"Sorry, but I'm afraid we are out of stock on the large chip boards. Those chips have been made obsolete by the manufacturer, so we moved everything to the new style."

Loadman, How have you made the board, with the kit codemercs or with the ledwiz?

Do you have any other idea for putting at the display?

Yes,

I need to do some testing to see if I can get mala to work with a cheaper IOW24 chip , but I think I can help you.

Give me a few days to test

The IOW40 Chip is great  as it does LCD and LED and there are so many other cost effective LED options now it is not work it.

The IOW24 may be ideal  ;)

OK I just confirmed that the IO-Warrior24 can drive your LCD display with MaLa (with a minor code change I just made to MaLa).. See attached pic

Some Simple Options:
1) You buy the IO-Warrior24 starter kit and http://www.codemercs.com/index.php?id=79&L=1
2) I sell you my IO-Warrior24 starter kit (happy to test it with your LCD if you want to post that to me first)

Ideally if there was enough interest I could produce some custom boards at a reduced cost than buying a complete test kit just to drive a LCD.  ;)  As the  chips themselves just cost €11,75, and you only need a few more components to make it drive a LCD.

Loadman, I have to send to you the display to Australia from Spain, and I think it is going to cost more than the display (it cost 9 euros), so I have thought that a good option could be if you sold me your IO-Warrior-24 kit. If it would possible, how much would everything  be? What would the kit include (cables, etc)?

I also have other questions, what is the code you are going to modify?  Mala or IO-Warior-24? And the modification for Mala Code is for everybody or just for my Mala version?

I suppose I could sell it to you for 30Euro with cables, you will need to 'solder' a socket onto your LCD display yourself OK? It includes the board, USB cable, ribbon cable and a 16 pin socket to solder to the LCD display.

Send the money to me via the Donation Button to Loadman on the donation page at malafe.net. That is the bottom donation button.  ;)

The code is 'extra' code to support the IO-Warrior 24, is for everybody.

Loadman, I've found a bug when I run Mame Emulator with MaLa. The characters at the LCD display don't work properly. When I try to scroll the time at miliseconds box, the speed is always the same... ??? :o This only happens with Mame. In main menu MaLa it's OK

Is it a bug?

thanks

Yep,

The scroll speed when mame is running is hard to control.
