found program to change snaps easily from 0000.png to filename
« on: October 16, 2008, 07:34:34 pm »
we all know that newer mame versions take snaps and put them in folders with 0000.png inside. you can download snaps but still you will end up having to take your own and if your rom collection is many it can be time consuming renaming all these files and then removing each file and adding to your snap folder etc
Try the following it saved me hours as I have over 5000 roms and needed to take over 500 of my own snaps.

Download FileBoss
where you get this is up to you
take all your folders with 0000.png snaps and put them in a folder

open FileBoss

open folder in left column
goto select / all
down the bottom click on rename
click on advanced formatting
in pattern for names put <folder>.<ext>
put a tick in include subfolders and click ok
click rename all and this will rename all 0000.png files to the same name as the folder is it is in.

make sure you still have all selected and  goto Actions and choose flatten folders
browse for a folder to output your new images with thier right names amd click ok
a window will pop up saying how many folders will be copied
click ok

you now have all renamed snaps which you can copy to your snaps folder

I've wondered for years why Windows hasn't had something like this already in it....although I would use it for other support files; I much prefer titles over snaps.

Cool program!

<begin late night rant/question>   :blah:

So, would this, let's say, help someone who had a large set (i.e. a "goodset") of legally owned roms who had trimmed them down to the ones he owned and (ungoodmerged them) and then downloaded a "no-intro" set of snaps/titles?  Namely, the rom names, hypothetically speaking, would be all Cowering standards ([u*] [!] etc.), while the no-intro sets all have what looks like a header or some sort of other hexidecimal/alphanumeric code for each snap/title...

Now let's say said person wanted to somehow apply each one of the snaps to the appropriate rom... is there anything out there that could combine these two standards? There also seems to be updated .dat files that correspond to the "no-intro" set# which perhaps could be of some use.   It appears upon further examination that said zip files also contain crc32 #'s which just might correspond to heretofore mentioned snap#'s....

So...ummm yeah, will this program help? Or is there some sort of manual .bat workaround for such a person?

Thanks in advance.

P.s. the great and powerful "search" was consulted and it lead me to this thread :D
