I'm From Tassie.
and from what I've seen, or more specifically HAVEN'T seen, I think I may be the first Tasmanian to build a mame Cab (though technically mine's in mid-build at the moment) - at the very least if someone else HAS beaten me to it, they haven't got it online, not that I've been able to find.... so untill it's proven otherwise, I'm claiming the bragging rights  ;D

Good stuff Bluntman,

I haven't seen any other South Aussies on this site but looking at the poll someone else ticked SA, when I deal with someone in the arcade industry and they ask me what I want that for and I tell them about my Mame cabinet I usually get told they have a friend who has one, so there must be plenty of South Aussies out there.

G'day Happy Dude,

Yes you are right A.C.T. and Northen Territory arn't states I did use the word "State" in my subject line but in my message I was very careful to use the word "part". Anyway good to see another Aussie on this forum. Just wondering Happy_Dude have you made any controls or perhaps a cabinet if so let us know and if you can show us some pics. I have to get some pics of my cabinet on here but it's just a cheap conversion till I can make my dream cabinet.

Hey

Another South Aussie here (Go the Power)

I'm currently building my first cab, I went with a cocktail due to the the smaller size.  Actually just ordered the controls yesterday from Ozstick, so can't wait to get that prototype cp working to test out mame as it should be played!

You port supporters would have to be happy they're on top of the ladder and have a very easy game this week.  Should be a big percentage boost as you belt the Bulldogs.

Freo on the other hand - have a feeling they'll get beaten by Collingwood which is not what I want  >:(

NSW here.  AFL sux......just kidding.

[rant mode]
No offence and I have nothing against the guy, he is in fact quite helpful and everyones entitled to make a living.  However, why would you buy stuff from OZ Stick when you can get them from the US or UK including shipping cheaper?

For the price he charges for a J-Pac for example I can almost get 2 directly from Ultimarc including air mail to Australia, which takes less than a week usually.  A mate and I just bought a whole lot of stuff from Ultimarc and including shipping it came in around A$600.  The same gear from OZ-Stick not including shipping would have cost just under A$800 (not taking into account the sticks I'm getting from Ultimarc are T-Sticks not J-Sticks).

Let's say you're converting a Jamma cab for MAME and you want a 2 player CP with 6 buttons each plus player 1 & 2 start buttons using a J-Pac, Arcade VGA card and J-Sticks.

OZ Stick  A$             Ultimarc  US$
$432.70                   $226.60

Not including shipping from OZ Stick (but including shipping from Ultimarc) the Aussie $ would have to be at 52c for it to be worthwhile getting from OZ Stick.  At present its between 75c and 80c so the cost of getting the same parts from the UK is around A$310, saving you over A$120.

I'm just wondering what thought process is being used is all.  I mean a couple of weeks ago a J-Pac sold on eBay here in Austrlia for over $100 when you can get one shipped from Andy for less than that and know that it is brand new (less if you get ps2 rather than usb).

And it'd pretty safe to say both of these are the same stick:

balltop J-Stick from Ultimarc

balltop stick from OZ-Stick

With the Aussie dollars doing so well now, Ozstick isn't as competitive as it was a while back. I think when I ordered my Ipac4 from Ultimarc it worked out slightly cheaper than if I bought it from Ozstick, I'm sure Ultimarc would be much cheaper now.

Anway, it's good to see so many Aussies on this site.

Agreed, OZ Stick probably just need to have a look at their pricing with the new exchange rates.

Hi All!

Some people might recognise my username wrx2hot4u from ebay
I agree microwrx, Ozstick is very hepfull but way to over priced. Andy from Ultimarc would have to be 1 of the most helpfull guys I have dealt with since starting my Mame hobbie. Currently I have 2 machines, 4 player challenger machine and a 6 slot Neo Geo Machine.

This is a very helpfull website by the way RetroBorg, I see your all so a member of arcade-80s.

NSW to be exact.

As to Ozstick yes I bought from Andy direct after comparing prices though I will restate the exchange rate is a LOT better now so OzStick needs to review his pricing stat.

I noticed you were logged in to the arcade-80s forum site when I was last on, it's not a bad site for Aussies who own real Arcade machines, I own a Leisure & Allied Galaxian Cocktail Table, my wife has lost interest in it since I have my 4 player MAME cabinet and with space at a premium I reluctantly have to sell it. I thought I might put a Galaga PCB board in it as they get much higher bids on EBay or perhaps one of those 3 in 1 boards that have Galaga included.

Anyway, for any Aussies interested in this site here is the ink: http://www.arcade-80s.com/forum/index.php?

When I bought my stuff for the cab the aussie dollar wasn't doing too well at all compared with the US but as OzStick didn't actually have the joysticks and such that I wanted to use - I went overseas.  If I had've waited a year then I would have saved a heap of money with today's exchange rate.  I'm sure OzStick is looking at his prices but if he bought those overseas parts in bulk when the dollar wasn't great you can't really expect him to drop his price and take a loss.  There are plenty of people out there that will pay a higher price as it's much easier to deal local.

Ultimarc - Order and pay by credit card online and delivery to my door in around a week (I have had 1 order from Andy within 4 days).

OZ Stick - Order online, pay by direct deposit or COD, delivery to my door in 2-5 days.

Depends what your idea of easier is.

I think cdbrown is probably right that OzStik might of bought a lot of stock when the Aussie dollar wasn't doing so well.

The fact is we will always be the poorer cousins over here in Australia when it comes to arcade type stuff, look how cheap arcade cabinets, PCB's, monitors etc are on Ebay in the US to what they go for here in Australia on Ebay.

Part of the reason why stuff is cheaper in the US than here is Leisure & Allied held the main licenses for a lot of our classic games here is Australia but they only imported the PCB's and electronics from Japan and made up their own cabinets here in Australia. Unfortunately they made these cabinets out of chipboard compared to plywood that they used in the US, which means a lot of our cabinets didn't survive over time and also the artwork on our cabinets were different to that used on US cabinets for some games. I have to admit though that the Leisure & Allied cocktail cabinets are a superior design to that I have seen used in the US.

I agree, our cocktail machines are a much better design than the US ones.  I have seen several UK tables that are the same as ours though so I wonder if LAI took their design from a table offered over there.

I have a great 4 player cab I recently bought at auction with a working PCB for $250 which was made by Galaxy.  It's all plywood and built absolutely brilliantly, I love it.  Just ordered more gear from Ultimarc to convert it to MAME (J-Pac, I still want to use it for real PCB's).

I've also got an old LAI Space Invaders cab which I got at the same auction.  One of those old B&W reflection ones.  It works but the cab is one of the particle board ones and is falling apart, literally.  The side art was ripped off years ago by the looks so I'm just gonna scrap it.  It's a shame but it really is bad, every time I move it a trail of particle board chips is left behind.

I wish cabs were easy to come by...I decided to make mine from scratch, starting with a control panel, then moving up to a stand etc...Importing parts is definately the only way to go.

Sure cabs are harder to come by in australia with LAI having a virtual monopoly. My LAI made cab is plywood luckily and damn heavy. It's got 2 wheels and 2 handles and I still needed help to move it in LOL!

In Sydney you can buy cabs starting from http://www.ableamusements.com.au/ and the working cabs with games start at $250.00 from memory. Luckily I bought my working cab at auction for $75.00 though =) Pity it's only once a year.

Checked out your control panel stand Zzap, nicely done, I guess it's very similar to mine, mine is the front part to a Gottlieb showcase cabinet with just a little shelf I tacked on the back with a 21 inch pc monitor sitting on it, unfortunately no trackball like yours. I don't seem use the 4 players very often and I guess when I think about it, don't use 2 players all that often either, I guess I'm not really into the fighting games that much. Really wish I had a trackball for Centipede and Missile Command, I guess I'll have to wait till I can afford to build my dream cab.

I see your selling your arcade collection: http://www.arcade-80s.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=131 what's going on, don't tell me your growing up, getting responsible and doing the right thing for the family! ;)

You got to have priorities, surely playing arcade games are more important than your wife having a baby. ;D

I will give you $50 for TMNT. :P

LOL, very funny retroborg! $50? I'll take it! and while your there how about I bend over and take it from behind LOL just kidding  ;)
Im not selling everything exactly, im keeping my Neo Geo 6 slot machine, maybe but i haven't decided on the 26" Cab yet.I spent 4 hours last night re wiring and soldering.
Reason: My trade is telecommunications, I cant stand how
dodgy theses arcade places wire up there machines. If anyone knows what im taking about ive platted all cabling and tied down everything. You tip my machine upside down and shake and you wouldn't hear a sound :) thats if you could lift about 110kgs. For someone who doesn't do arcade machines all day and how neat i do it Im worried about the what smarts the qualified guys have hahahaha.

Any comments on that??? Im sure there would be??? It could be said im a little to picky when it comes to cabling. Owell im a Pro what can i say lol and Modest too!

Whats the deal with people selling J-Pac's and other Ultimarc products on ebay?
It just go's to show some people will do anything to make a quick buck! In my opinion people that buy stuff from Ultimarc for cheap and then re sell it for an over inflated amount are just d*cks!

The whole principle behind Mame is "FREE" or "Hobbie" not "Lets rip off people who dont know much about a hobbie there just getting into"!!!. And then the seller acutually hyper links to www.ultimarc.com??? Thats almost as good as this guy who was selling plans for MAME cabs on ebay then hyperlink to another persons site. People will say to me "But if people are stupid enough thats there prob", well that not the point nor the pricipal of it!

Im now think of putting J-Pacs on ebay for "COST PRICE" just to prove a point. Then people might realise what there really worth, or if people email me I will advise them of the cheapest and most cost affective alternative. I dont care if this post comes under fire I have a right to my opinion and I want everyone to be able to enjoy old school gaming with worrying about getting ripped off. I know my self as Im sure a lot of people do how bad it feels when you buy something and then later get told youve been ripped off.

Did you ever stop and think that if the seller included the original sites URL, that it might be legit sale with no intent to make quick cash?

If the buyer is stupid enough to pay more than they would if they purchased a new one from the site, well then good luck to the seller.  Laziness has cost the buyer.  Nothing new here.  Do you should around for the best price on computer assessories, or do you buy the RRP harvey norman price?  Or make them price match for that matter.

I've know of JAMMA harnesses that sell for $30 on a local site, which wen't for $60+ dollars on ebay auctions.

What to make of this?  Well, the site should set them self up as a ebay trader, it is seems to be a better tool to allow people to find and buy your product, be it at the buy-it-now price of $30 or not.  Sellers choice I guess.

That might be fine for something else but MAME is a hobby, not a commercial business.  It, like this web site, is all about helping people out in an effort to share in the experiences we once had as kids and keep the old games alive.

Now people like Andy Warne and Randy T have gone to alot of trouble to develop products to make doing all this much easier for us and I believe as comercial entities they are quite entitled to make a buck off it.  Neither do I have an issue with someone who sells a J-PAC or the like on eBay because they bought 1 too many or don't need it anymore.

However, this person has obviously bought a whole load of stuff from Andy and is selling them, one at a time, for profit...blatantly in my opinion.  And as far as I'm concerned that is just not in the spirit of this hobby.  If they were not out to make a quick buck then they'd stick a buy it now price on the auctions that was $5 or maybe $10 over what it cost them to get them here but that isn't the case is it.  I wonder if they are also burning copies of Andy's CD to go with them as well or selling them with no documentation at all (you get one CD from Andy regardless how many items you buy).

Just because there are stupid people out there doesn't mean it isn't wrong to prey on them (regardless of the legality).

And anyone with half a brain knows the difference between buying from somewhere like Harvey Norman and an online computer place is convenience.  I can go down to my local Harvey Norman, pay for something and take it home.  I pay more because they are there, I can physically go in and check stuff out and take it home after making my decision.  With online places I save the money at the price of less convenience and having to wait (although sometimes not very long).  The online store has less overheads so can afford to sell cheaper.

If you could buy a J-PAC in Harvey Norman then buying at that price is fine.  But this person offers no such benefit, in fact little benefit at all as regardless who you buy off you still have to wait.

You are entitled to your opinion just as we are entitled to ours! :)

Yes, MAME is about preserving old games before the original hardware dies out of existence, but  not officially about allowing you to share memories past.  If that was the case, the roms would be free for you use.  Consider it more as an "no one really cares but it is still technically illegal" nicety of MAME.

If you are true arcade hobbyist, well then I am sure you own some old PCBs? or maybe not... they are still available at reasonable prices if you look hard enough.... thats if you really interested to that degree...  Maybe you already are, and good if so... because I am... I own a several boards... one which cost me a lot of do$h at the time.   But I don't regret it, as its still not emulated... and may never be due to heavy protection...

Oh and sorry, but when I did I mention online store in my original post?  I can pick up a local computer trader magazine, walk in to a local store and pick up a product upto a 1/4 of the price cheaper than a big retail store.  Okay, they'll probably give me a hard time if I need/want to return/replace it, but hey, for that amount of money I'll take the risk.  Or alternatively, like I have before, walk in to OfficeWorks, show them the adverts of the competiting store up the road, and whammo, after a phone call to check that shop has it in stock, that printer was mine for the same, heavily discounted price.

And back to the main argument just to end, again.... what can you do about .... nothing...  so why waste time caring about what stupid people buy things at stupid prices.  Sad thing is, you probably care more than Andy etc.  I sure he is doing quite well... and good luck to him if he is.

In theory, you can look at it in a way that Andy (and others) are pocketing good money with good products that easily enhance the MAME experience.  So do they donate to MAME dev or ROM dumping teams with a percentage of there product earings?  They have created there success from a "non-commercial" hobby that is MAME, running a very commerical business.

Hope they do, that is if they are doing well from it all....  but thats there choice either way and I'm fine with that.

Anyway, lets just leave it at that.... I see your point...  I was just kind of expressing the reality of it.... and they fact that overall, its probably so insignificant that we should be enjoying games on MAME rather than worring about it.   I'm sure Andys not loosing sleep over it....  but I am.... as it late.... as I write this.... time for bed.

Play nice... ;D

Yep, I've got a couple of game boards.  I want to make sure I can play Gyruss forever (so I have 3 of those, a fully working genuine Konami, a fully working bootleg and a working bootleg with sprite issues).  I have a couple of others as well.

Point taken about the computer stores.  You didn't mention online stores at all, my mistake.  The principal is still the same though - big store with big rent versus small store with smaller rent.  But I get your point.

Not only do I live in Adelaide too (in fact, just looking at the control panel thread in regards to Magill Road, I work just around the corner from the Maid and Magpie) but I am also a Power supporter as well.   ;D

Melbourne, Victoria here.

I've been lurking on these boards for a while; slowly getting enough info to confidently start construction on my first MAME cab. It's good to see so many Australians here.

Recently started to get into arcade hardware collecting as well. I've been on the lookout for an empty Lowboy style cabinet, still tossing up the pro's and cons of just building one that I know will be decent quality.

G'day Ryan,

Bad luck about the Crows, perhaps Craigy can save them.

Looking at the Ultimarc web site they sell their balltops in red, blue, black and light green, which means yellow is your only problem, perhaps you might have to put up with a black balltop in your yellow panel until they come out in yellow. Perhaps contact Andy Warne at Ultimarc and find out if he's able to do anything for you, or find out if he plans to sellow yellow balltops in the future.

Or perhaps just go with all black joysticks like in this picture.

Good luck.

Welcome to BYOAC, Evil Incarnate.

Retro

Thank you for the warm welcome.
Well the software we use at work is paid software i.e is isn't the kind of stuff you can use at home as a general rule. The jukes I work on are made by a place in NZ then shiped over here, and they make the software "in house".
To give you an idea here is their website. http://www.4ajukebox.com/
The software has a few things which are a pain like the keys are not remapable, but it also has a few really nice fetures like twin display (1screen juke other screen for music videos) and it is controlled with ease. Normal function only requires 4 butons.

Sorry for the long winded answer but because the software is made "in house" it sorta doesnt have a proper name to just give for it lol.

Looking at building a lowboy due to space restrictions in my townhouse.
Currently going through the 'which joystick to get' dilemma. But I think I have finally settled for the J-Stick. Either from Ozstick or Ultimarc.

I think we should let the Indonesian judicial system take it's path and wait for the verdict to be handed down before we start getting angry.

What im worried about is the judges.

The main judge(the 1 you see mostly) doesn't seem to care.

There system is based on the Innocent till proven guilty yet he said (and this was said it's not some something i heard) that she hasn't proven she's innocent yet.

That comment just contradicts the whole way the system is ment to work.

He has done 500 drug cases and hasn't aquitted 1 but the details on them arn't known so im not basing my beliefe on that but he just seems to wanna make the aussie pay.

He doesn't seem to be a fair and honest judge with the coments he has said.

Hey fellow Australians, is it just me, or does fellow BYOACer rchadd's avatar sport a striking similarity to our supreme leader and Prime Minister, the honourable John Howard?

Sorry for bumping this thread - but it seemed like the easiest way to ping the South Aussies.

Did anyone from Adelaide go to the Evans & Clarke auction today involving the arcade machines? I know quite a few lots didn't sell, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in going in for the internals of a machine if I just wanted the cab (as sinful as that is of course)? I know they are open to direct offers on some between $100 - $200, but figured I'd find out if anyone else was interested.

There is at least one thing wrong with practically all of them, whether it is broken monitors, missing coin-mechs, connectors or controls, no power up or freezing after a certain screen. The skill testers actually looked completely junked.

As I said, I missed the actual auction, but apparently it only took five minutes because everyone passed on the auctioneers starting minimums of at least $150 for many of the machines. Speaking to them afterwards, I think they might be more willing to consider lower bids in an effort to at least gid rid of some of them. My understanding is that more of the custom machines were taken then the basic uprights, which is good for me personally, since that is what I am interested in.

Arcade machines start at item 1000.

Does an Aussie living overseas count?

I'm from Sydney, NSW originally, but now I'm living in Toronto, Canada.

It's still in the Commonwealth :)

Hi Chuck,
I'm from Brisbane. Don't get out much though...

Any of you guys swim the great barrier reef or chase nude women around Nullarbor?  That's what I'd do if I was in Austria.

I've done plenty of the first two but haven't been to the Nullarbor.
