Wich Kb interface to buy!?
« on: June 25, 2003, 01:07:32 pm »
OK! Don't blame or laugh of this 'newbie' thread!  ???

I've been researching for some time and i already found 4 encoders with different functions and prices!  :P

Now, i'm confused enough and this question runs my mind! Wich one to buy!?

There's Keywiz (cheap, functional but no led funtions and the service doesn't seems trustworthy)

There's I-pac (for those who live in !Europe! (overseas tax isn't cheap) and don't want instaled a trackbal in the CP, cheap, easy to mount...)

There's MK64 (This one may be a fatality 'kidding' :) I already saw the features and i think it's one good solution for those light addicts! But if it has no overseas buy option, i can forget it beause i'm Portuguese! :(

And finally, there's Hangstrom electronics wich i've saw many people using it but i don't know it quite well to comment! :)

So experts, any sugestions??

:)

What makes you say that the "service doesn't seem trustworthy"? RandyT's been more than helpful for me personally with my key wiz, FWIW.

I'm confused here as well.  are you saying the ipac is cheap (even after Euro taxes?) or isn't it?  Ultimarc has a separate product that is excellent for interfacing trackballs (and spinners, etc) that you can use in conjunction with the IPAC to have both regular arcade controls and a trackball on the same panel...

All of the options function reasonably well as ways to interface a PC to arcade controls via keyboard encoding.   If you are doing more than a 2 player panel you most likely will want to go with an IPAC/4.

If you are going to be buying an optipac or other stuff (joysticks, etc) from ultimarc anyways at a later date/order then consolidate your shipping and get the ipac.

If the shipping from grooveygamegear for the key wiz isn't prohibitive (or other duties) it too is a fine option.

It helps to have a better idea of your project goals in order to intelligently recommend anything for your project.

Well, i'm thinking in something like this:

- CP similar to X-arcade but bigger
- 4 balltop, 8-way joysticks (if they exist with this config)
-6 pushbuttons for every player (4 players max) + 2 flipper buttons
I know it's gonna be a pain in the a... to make something like this because of the CP width but i'm gonna try to solve it!

-Bezel (i do this)

and about 6 buttons for configs (pause, reset etc.)

Ahhh...

BTW you'd get more opinions if this was moved over to the Main forum (although I understand why you put it in buy/sell/trade its usually used for more literally buying selling and trading stuff rather than answering a general question or product recommendation)

If you are doing a 4player control panel you are most likely best off going with an IPAC/4.

BTW you don't HAVE to so many config buttons... ipac's have whatis called a "shift" functionality.  You can have a designated "shift" button and use it in conjunction with buttons you'll already have (like player 1 through 4 start buttons) example :  pushing shift and player 1 could mean exit ... pushing shift and player 2 could equal pause, etc etc.

(and you can program the ipac to whatever you'd like!)

*shrug* hope that helps and good luck with your project.

I was not turning down any of those encoder companys i was just 'provoking' someone to tell me something about it!  ;D

Hummm, i guess that right now it's tough work! :))

Thks again and good luck with ya projects!
