I think I killed My power supply, need input on replacement.

It shouldn't surprise me that this old stern cab, circa 1981, would have a power supply with a weak heart, so If I cant figure out why it isn't working or any fuses are blown, can someone recommend a good arcade power supply replacement on the cheap?

This is a Jamma cab that I'm converting to a Mame cab. The power supply will basically be running the monitor only, but I may want to be able to convert it back to a plain Jane Jamma cab someday, so I'll need enough power to run everything.

Have you cracked the power supply open to see if anything is obvious?

Replacements you can get pretty much anywhere.  Happ, Bob Roberts, Betson.  Standard Peter Chou power supply.  Usually run about $30 on sale.  You can find them cheaper if you look.

I'm new to actual arcade machines and this was an old stern cliff hanger at one point.  There are several fuses but at first glance, they all seem OK.

If you will only be keeping the monitor, you don't need a DC power supply.  You'll need one for your PC if you have one for MAME, but just use a PC supply for that.

Take a good look at the wiring. The power supply doesn't power the monitor! AC goes in from wall, goes through switches, fuses, and eventually an isolation transformer, then finally to the monitor. Check the fuses.

Never heard of Cliff Hanger before. So it's a Stern Laser Game eh......any side-art left ?

I bet there are people at the KLOV forum interested in a cab like that, although it may be _really_ hard to restore a rare game like that.

The laser disk and player are long gone.  So is the rom board.  No marquee.  The CPO is destroyed with wood glue.  The side art may be under two coats of paint, dunno.  The only think original in it is the Power supply and I think That is now fried.  I guess the monitor is still OK.

Reread RayB's post -- the power supply converts AC power to DC for the PCB (and maybe coin door lights), it does NOT power the monitor (although the power for the monitor may connect to the AC mains at the power supply).

If your monitor is not powering up (and did before you replaced the AC cord), then you have another issue to deal with before you consider the power supply. Your power supply may indeed be bad, but based on your description I am not comfortable with that conclusion yet. You mention fans ... which fans -- internal to the power supply or are they cabinet fans ?

Take inmind I'm a total noob here, but here is what I did.  I started tracing The main power coming in.  This cab is neat because they placed AC outlets in it for the laser disk player in two locations, so I can check if power is getting to those locations.

The main power is getting to the cabinet fans and to both outlets (when I turn the switch), as well as the marquee light.  Those wires all direct.  Then the wires go into teh nest of mounted hardware.  I dont know if they are all power supplies or inverters, hell, I dont even know exactly what an inverter is.  All I know is, the red wires that come out the other side, which go to the monitor are not getting juice.  I have to verify this with a volt meter still though.

OMG, do they make a tool to pull fuses.  The things are like impossible to remove.  Need to get my multimeter back from my brother in law first.

And yes, they actually do make a tool for pulling fuses ..... but I've never needed one.

What power supply was the JAMMA setup wired to ?
I only ask since you have said it had Klax in it and want to clarify what they did to install it.

But as mentioned before, your monitor has nothing to do with the "power supply".
Check anything AC. And anything AC going into or out of a transformer.

I'm almost certain that all teh power stuff is from teh original stern cliff hanger cab.  Very ancient looking.

I would restore it back to cliff hanger if you have the laser disc / player.. they usually are very sought after cabs not many of these left and sell for ALOT of money. I know a member on KLOV who owns one, ive seen it in person.. It would be a shame to mame it.

The only thing original on it is the cab itself and the power supply.  Everything else was converted jamma stuff.  I don't have the laser disk or player.

There is a cool printed sheet that was stapled to the back side of the electronics door which has dip settings and what not.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to pay serious money just for the cab.  But I could be wrong.
