Has anyone been able to get the doo doo doo doo sound out of their DK Mario as he runs up the ramp?

That was one of my favorite sounds from back in the day.  I'm assuming it's the rom and not the emulator?  Maybe that sound was never able to get ported over?  A friend of mine had the sit down arcade when we were growing up...

I don't recall any sounds missing the last time I played it.  Earlier versions of MAME used samples for some of the sounds, so if you're using an older version, you might be missing that particular sample.  Other than that, I have no idea why any sounds would be missing.

I've been using versions of mame32.  Everytime I try to use the latest version of mame it never works on my computer?

update roms?  I thought roms were just roms...sort of a one time thing.

I'm not supposed to ask but are there sites out there with updated roms on them?

Like DK 1.0 and DK 1.1 etc?

Oh, come on!  If you know you're not supposed to ask, then why are doing it and breaking Rule #5?

Some roms are updated periodically, so that could very well be your DK problem.

Tip:

Your version of MAME needs matching versions of roms.
So a leper walks into a bar and as he gets his beer, a finger falls off. The bartender who is serving him turns and pukes all over the place. The leper, feeling bad, says, "Was it my finger falling off?" The bartender turns to him and says, "No, it's the guy dipping chips into your back."

So to find out you find the version of mame you would go to properties right?

Then you would go to properties on the rom...and then check to see if the versions match?

Donkey Kong in the current versions that have the sound properly emulated have the correct Jumpman walking sound.

Okay, I'll admit that I probably need more fiber in my diet...but you admitted that you know you're not supposed to ask, and yet you asked anyway.  I guess that's just a pet peeve of mine, so sorry.  I don't think it makes me a "wiseguy," and I'm sorry I started offering advice in the first place.  Peace, indeed.

Donkey Kong stopped using samples in MAME .116, I believe. 

I don't know whether you can use "properties" to check the MAME version, but I know for sure that you can check it by entering "mame -h" from the command line.   I'm not sure how you figure out what version of the roms you might have.

Skyblast , I had the same problem...You need to see what version MAME you have...I had ver. 114 and at the time I was trying to figure out MAME ( STILL AM!)... I went to mameworld.net and located another webpage called Twisty samples ( look for it)...He/She has old versions and newer version Mame samples...find the one called dkong and copy it over to your samples folder located in your mame folder...it should work....

I found this out because the samples were renamed...

Older version of MAME = used samples for sound...if the samples are missing from the samples sub-folder in the MAME folder,  you're not going to hear sounds with MAME .116 and before I do believe it was. 

Newer version of MAME = Sounds properly emulated by MAME - No samples necessary.


Your options are - Get the samples and leave MAME alone or get a new version of MAME and don't worry about the samples.  If you're a newb I'd recommend just getting the samples since MAME seems to be functioning fine for you aside from the DK sounds.

Plus, the 'accurate' sound emulation is a little tubby in the bass. Maybe it is accurate, but it's not necessarily preferred.

Yeah, I hate how muffled it sounds. I sometimes make the mistake of showing Donkey Kong to people first thing when I fire up my cab and the sound leaves them less than impressed.
