[US-MA] WTB: ISA NICs
« on: January 02, 2009, 11:23:43 am »

I'm looking for an SMC brand ISA NIC.  Old as the hills, I know, but it also seems to be the one known card that works with Pin2k.  There are enough PC parts hoarders around here that maybe someone has one in a shoebox somewhere...   ;D

How many and do you have a pic?  I'm looking for which IC is on it to verify I have the correct one you need.  I may have some, we've started to throw them away though.

The specific model I've seen mentioned is the SMC8416T.  I'm not sure what the chip IDs would be.  I would be willing to give a shot to any SMC card, though, as odds are there are at least a couple more similar revs that will work.

From your link, it looks like the big IC has SMC label on it.  I'm pretty sure all ours use a chip made by Digital which was used on a lot of ethernet cards.  I looked in the recycle bin no SMC, so I'll have to check on Monday.

Found a couple cards, but they are SMC8216c.

Hrm... wonder if that's close enough that they would use the same drivers.  It's possible, I guess, but the 8216c has coax too... how much do you want for them?  Worth a shot I guess if for no reason other than to rule them out.

Pin 2k are linkable?

I just got rid of a bunch of ISA NICs too.  If I'd known, I'd have hung on to them.

I just got rid of a bunch of ISA NICs too.  If I'd known, I'd have hung on to them.

They are but the networking is very narrow and from what I've seen known to work on only one obscure ISA NIC.  Trying similar rev SMC NICs is a total shot in the dark on my part.

Check out this online tournament site.

I can't get to marvin3m from here to paste the explanation but the gist is that the networking was added at the last second for the '99 pinball expo... so to get it working for that week the developer got it working for the specific NICs he had on hand.  Then Williams closed the pin division a week after that so no more work was done on it.

NuCore should remedy that problem.

Let me see what I can do.  Do you need more then 1 or is 1 enough?

1 is enough for the test, but if it works, you'll be able to sell the rest to other pin2k owners.  So keep them on hand until I get a result.
