ATI rage Card
« on: October 04, 2008, 02:55:24 am »
At the moment i have a p3 800mhz, 256mb sdram and onboard graphics and sound. Most of my mame games run ok but the 1v1 fighters are really bad and slow. I was wondering if i got a ATI Rage 128 Pro 32mb, would it speed it up to a reasonable level?

Thanks Dylan

I'd say CPU is holding you back more than anything unless your emulator just isn't compatible with your onboard video.

That's not a huge graphics card upgrade, most likely.  Your CPU and RAM are the limiting factors here.

I'm trying to play games like street fighter. but the games that run slow don't work when i have directx turned on in the mame config. I just get an arror that says

Error creating dirextX7 device: 887602eb
Video emulation was not started.

Thats why i think a graphics card might help!

but when directX is turned on  i get a framerate of 5-10fps. which is shocking. :banghead:

Does this help at all?

What version of MAME are you using?
You may have better luck with older versions

Agreed.  This and your CPU are limiting factors.  Video card matters little.  How it's used, OTOH, does matter.

Just use Nebula. It runs all CPS2 games which includes street fighter full speed on my 400mhz Celeron 128mb ram.

I have used Multiple Versions of mame from 0.66 up to .104 with all the same results. the only problem with the cpu is that i have an old mother board so it is hard to get a better p4 cpu. But i think i need a graphics card to fix the directX error. What do you guys think?

Thanks Dylan

Oh I'd say you would have a VERY hard time putting a P4 on your P3 motherboard....

Try these emulators for 2d fighters in this order

Final Burn Evolution
Nebula
Final Burn
Kawaks
NeoRageX

the last two ran 100% on my PII 350 MHZ with 128MB of ram.
