Space Invaders Artwork background not displaying?

When I launch space invaders throu MameUI32 or Mala, the Space Invaders background is not showing up.  I have artwork turned on and it works fine in all the rest of my games.  It runs and looks like the first 3 screen shots on this page, just a black background:

I would like for it to look like the last screen shot on that page, with planet and stars in the background.

When I look at the invaders.zip file, there is a background but it is rotated, presumably for vertical monitors.  Is there a way to make the background work for horizontal monitors?

Check the artwork meets the right criteria for other MAME art ie. correctly named, correct colour depth, pixel size and resolution.

Isn't the background on SI a printed, or projected image, and not an image file?

Make sure the "overlay" option is turned on. it's different from artwork.
