*J_K_M_A_N WINS* NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em 2008
« on: September 02, 2008, 08:56:16 am »
Time for the 4th Annual BYOAC NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em!

New this year:  a prize!  I wanted to give something out that is fun but not big enough to make the game triple in size.  This year the winner will receive one (1) sealed copy of Outlaw Volleyball Red Hot and one (1) sealed copy of Outlaw Golf 9 More Holes of X-Mas.  These are fully playable Xbox "demos" that were sold only at Blockbuster for a short time a few years ago.

<placeholder for a pic>

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post.

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

Poked through last year's thread and found this... holy crap that strategy could have actually won the game last year if you used the Patriots (if it were allowed).  Who would have ever thought that possible?

That's how this game works, tommy.  Eventually, most people are out, and the ones that are left begin to make different choices.  We have a full 17 weeks to play and the playoffs if need be but rarely does one of these games go much beyond the halfway point.  Even if everyone picks the Colts every week, the Colts aren't going 18-0.

BTW, this week and the next week are the hardest to pick.  Some team will undoubtedly come out hot the first week and knock off somebody's safe pick.  Then the next week somebody will pick that hot team which will lay an egg in week 2.

Too bad Tommy isn't here to pick the Giants in week 1.  Those were fun losses in week 1 & 2.  ;D

People have until an hour before the second monday night game, technically, though really you have until an hour before the game you are picking begins.

Good Lord - my alliegience to my home team paid off.

That was the sole reason for picking the Falcons - as I said last year, I'm a loyal (if not often stupid) sports fan....but god, today was fun.

I bought in to Mike Smith's sound bites this week, as well as Matt Ryan's, and you know what? They, along with Michael Turner and the rest of the boys, did not let me down.

Atlanta 34, Detroit 21.  I know they won't win every game, but if this is any indication (today), we will soon be saying "Who was that sucky quarterback(edit) and team we had a few years ago?"

Poor Charger fans, I saw the end of that game. You could have heard a pin fall on carpet when he caught that TD.

I have been debating whether I want to participate this year or not. I figure it can't hurt to throw a bit of season opener support behind my team though.

Funny, I was thinking the same thing this morning (that I ought to participate, not that the Packers are my team) AND will go with the same pick:

can we change our pick before the game we chose starts, so long as we meet the dead line for the next game?  Im sorta iffy on this giants pick, I wanna see what ESPN says :)

I think someone made a second contest for those who got eliminated early last year.  Kinda like a toilet bowl tournament.

As usual, week 1 was the hardest week.  Now the hard part is figuring out if teams like the Eagles are really that good or if teams like St. Louis are really that bad.  Last year the 49ers started strong and fizzled fast.  What can the Patriots do without Brady?  Why did the re-tooled Jets need a last minute interception to beat 1-15 Miami?

A few opening day observations:

1.)  NEVER count on Cincinnati to either win or lose
2.)  When it comes to the chargers, see observation #1.
3.)  Tommy is still an idiot.

I did, not that it helped.  I actually switched off the Pats thinking Brady might not play... and switched to the Colts.  Sadly I was 2-3 on that compound prediction.

We can run a second one after this one is over if people want.  I have like 4 copies of each of those games.

markvp speaks truth here. I made the foolish leap of faith based on the rookie QB factor of the Ravens, completely ignoring the fact that the Bengals have spent more time in the spotlight for shenanigans than anything else. Happily my Steelers more than made up for my horrible pick by playing a complete game in only 3 quarters. Gonna be another fun season.

Slim pick'ns this week.

I gotta wait and see if anyone gets hurts in to today's game.

I was very tempted to save New England for this week.  Luckily my pride refused to let me get kicked out in week one.

Yes, and rumors of MCL partial tear as well.  The usual pattern is that he's out for 2008 and spends 2009 playing weirdly.  If he ever gets back to his level of play from most of his career it probably won't be until at least halfway through 2009.

Nah... even if Young goes further off the deep end they still have Kerry Collins.  He's better than Simms.

EDIT:  interesting... Wikipedia says he signed with the Titans but the NFL does not list it in the transactions log.  Can we say agent trying to make the Patriots make a move?

Wonder why the transactions log is so unreliable this year.

Just got this in an info service email:

Quote
Vince Young - QB, Tennessee Titans

Updating a previous report, ESPN.com reports that the MRI on Tennessee Titans QB Vince Young's left
knee revealed a sprained medial collateral ligament. The team is not giving him a timetable to
return, but quarterbacks can return in two to four weeks. Minnesota Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson
returned from a MCL tear in two weeks earlier this year.

Kerry Collins will step into the starting role, which means Tennessee receivers
can reclaim at least some measure of fantasy relevancy. The Titans also signed Chris Simms as
insurance. Young has battled a variety of injuries during his brief NFL career, playing through
several, so his time frame for return could certainly fall on the short end of the two- to four-week
spectrum. However, it sounds as if Young has some issues beyond the knee to deal with as well.

It's probably not as much about Brady as it is Belichek and his arrogance.  Not only to cheat, but to get caught and use the standard 9 year old's answer of "I didn't know it was against the rules".  Then the fact that they would run up the scores last year, being an ass to everyone after games were over, the b.s. of the injury report etc.  How ironic is it that it was the first time in 50+ weeks or whatever that Brady wasn't on the injury report and he got hurt?

Did anyone see the Broncos Chargers game? Cutler fumbles the ball with 1 minute to go, but because the ref blows the whistle and calls the ball dead, the fumble somehow gets overlooked and forgotten about. This is the dumbest rule ever, "I blew my whistle, so no matter what happens, my whistle is right" stupid. So. to make a long story short, the Broncos end up winning the game when they never should have had the ball and in effect, ruined and corrupts the NFL and both teams records. The ref even all but admitted he made a mistake. Fine, you made a mistake, but that does not mean you continue on and let the mistake go and have the wrong team win the game.  :dizzy:

I saw the end of the game, and agree that the ref screwed up. Unfortunately, he was correct in ruling that no matter what, when the whistle blows the play is dead. Anything after the whistle is non-reviewable. It is the same as if the ball rolled out of bounds. In the era of review, the ref should have known to NOT blow his whistle on a questionable play just to be on the safe side.

Having said that, Mike Shanahan gets major respect from me for going for 2. You can't lay down and forfeit because of a blown call - You have to play them as they fall. Giving SD a chance to still win by going for 2 shows his integrity.

I wonder if Hemi has ever played football.  The whistle rule is for safety reasons.  The whistle blows everyone stops playing.  If you had some guys still playing and some guys letting up you would see guys getting carted off strapped to boards a lot more often.

I don't think I was talking about having guys "still play" I think that goes without saying and is pretty obvious. The players need to follow the ref and his whistle, but the ref does not need to follow his own bad call when he could just rule it a fumble. The play was whistled dead, but the play really still went on and took it's natural coarse as if it was live (as most plays do when a potential turnover is involved). The chargers picked up the fumble and went out of bounds. You can't let the game end on a mistake and have the NFL lose face and have all those hours of gameplay mean nothing and be wasted when you can fix it right there.

You also can't change the rules on the fly because you feel like it.  That is the rule - it was a bad call but life goes on.  It wasn't as bad as the first mistake they made when they failed to activate the replay booth and couldn't overturn a turnover that clearly wasn't a fumble.  If people are going to complain about the rules at least complain about the one they failed to get right.

You're right, the other was worse but this last one just seemed worse because it was at the end of the game.

The only thing I'm after is for the game to turn out how it was supposed to turn out and there should be nothing that ever gets in the way of that.

Nuts!  I’m out in the second week!

There wasn't any money on this one so over the weekend when I decided to change my pick to the nyg I forgot(didn't think to) change it here.

Good luck all.

The officials are a part of the game and, being human, they make mistakes.  Just like players and coaches, officials have judgement calls on every play and sometimes make mistakes.

I will say the same thing here that I tell my stepson when he bitches about a call.  When the outcome of a game comes down to one call from an official, the players have to look first at what they did before blaming the officials.  Sure, the blown call was bad, but if SD had played ANY defense yesterday, they still could have won.  Giving up 39 points isnt going to win MANY games at all.  Rivers picks didn't help either.

The replay screwup earlier doesn't help at all, but to blame the loss on the refs does the entire team a dis-service.  We need to teach personal responsibility instead of how to blame others.

I thoroughly agree.  Bad calls from refs tend to even themselves out over time.  This week, the Chargers get hosed... another week they will benefit from their opponent getting hosed.  Outcomes are determined by players, not officials.

For the most part, yes. In my experience, a bad plate umpire in baseball can completely control a game. It is despicable, but the youth leagues in my hometown were HORRIBLE with this. The coaches were always the umps of other teams games. For the most part they did right by everyone. There were 2 or 3 that simply took the game way too seriously and blatantly cheated.

You get an ump with a magical changing strike zone and you can without a doubt blame a loss on him. This is one of the reasons I didn't feel too sorry for the ump that had the catcher step out of the way on him.

Well I won't be surprised if there is at least an inquiry after those two monumental flubs.

That is beside the point though. SD still didn't deserve to win if they can't stop a desperation attempt at a TD AND allow a passing 2pt conversion.

Meh.  If pro sports has proven anything to us it is that it does not inquire into itself.  And the second call doesn't need to be investigated - it was just a blown call.  There was nothing Hochuli could do to fix it.  That's not as bad as the Bucs-Falcons game where the Bucs committed two bad fouls on one turnover play, the ref assigned one of them to the Falcons instead and made them offsetting for a replay of the down... at least that guy reversed himself when someone pointed out that he had it totally wrong.   ;D

It's ridiculous to say they shouldn't win if the other team got the ball for free and they couldn't stop them. Utterly ludicrous. They should not have the ball and already would have won. That's the game, ball control, and when you give the other team a free shot, how can you say they need to defend the field extra times.

Have you ever heard of a thing called "a come back"? By your rule, if they are leading at the start, then the game is over. That's silly, you can't judge any part of the game based on other times in the game. We are talking about what happened at that point in time and the ref lost the game for the Chargers. Plain and simple. On that day, the NFL, the teams and the fans wasted their day, their time and their money because a stupid rule about a whistle blowing means it can never be corrected.

The result of a game is the sum of all things that happened during the game.  Stop a touchdown in the second quarter and they won't have those points in the 4th quarter.  You sound like you've never played a sport before, bro.

I really do not need to have, or have not played a sport to know that when you give the other team the ball an extra time, that it's going to drastically reduce the odds of the other team winning the game especially at the end of the game. Now, as far as I'm concerned, the chargers recovered a fumble and DID their job but it was taken away by no fault of their own.

How can you defend a bad call and not see the wrong team won the game?

This is not going anywhere as far as a debate goes. I will never agree in what you say and you obviously will never agree in what I'm saying, and that's fine. Think about this, have a full game play itself out, find the winner, then call the teams back on the field and give one of the teams a free shot to score. Same difference.

You are right, the Chargers should have won on that play.

Whining about it does not change things. Shanahan acknowledged the blown call and responded by calling a runnning play from 10 yards out on 3rd down. He then called an easily defensible pass play on 4th down. And to give the Chargers one more chance at winning, he called a passing 2pt conversion. He gave them three bona-fide chances at correcting the error. They didn't. Thus, they did not deserve to win the game.

No game is won or lost on one event.  Ever.  A game is 60 minutes of events and depends on two teams and some officials, all of whom are fallable and make mistakes.

Fixt.

If everything turned out as it was "supposed to", it would just be a simple exercise of crunching numbers and we wouldn't even bother to watch.

And you think this would be less harmful to the integrity of the league than a blown call?!? That would be a disaster! At the least Shanahan would be banned from the league. Any player who followed him would be suspended and fined. The NFL would be a mess and a laughing stock.

No arguing here, only a friendly debate about how the refs let the Broncos win the game. But, don't let that hold you back, you can still leave the thread and feel secure in knowing you will not be missed.  ;D

I don't mean actually walk off the field, but have his team down the ball and leave. I think he would have gotten more respect from everyone if he did that, not that it was his fault he ended up with the ball, but he was the only one at that point who could have fixed it.

I agree that it would have been neat to see a kneel, and would have been a great display of sportsmanship. On the flip side, it can also be interpreted as an insult to 'hand the game to a competitor'.

Lets present this hypothetical situation:
You win the million dollar lottery, but another person claims they did too. They have the receipt and a digital photo of them holding the ticket, but they lost their winning ticket. Technically they won too, but due to a technicality you are the sole winner. Would you then voluntarily hand over half of your winnings?

You can try, but if Ed Hochuli blows his whistle, you're going to have to get up and brush your teeth a second time.

If it was as cut-and-dry as this case was with the NFL, I would. Also keep in mind the situations are not the same, in that the team who had wrong done to them was not their fault, where as the guy lost his ticket on his own.

I'd like to point out that the NFL officials are the most regulated officials of any American pro sport.  Each play and each call is reviewed after each and every game.  Every official is graded and deals with the errors.  The NFL supports the officials to the extent that they expect perfection, reward those who grade consistently the highest throughout the season with playoff/Super Bowl assignments, and spends a lot of time making sure that any errors that are made don't happen again.

On a side note, I'd put NHL officials number two with the NBA and MBL somewhere below my toilet ring.

I see the replay issue being totally different than Guns' call.  He made an error, fessed up and went right back to his job.  The replay error wasn't his, he couldn't control it, and is under the assignment of another person/area.

Don't mean to cause a firestorm in this thread.  Perhaps I am only posting as getting knocked out in the first round sucks!   ;D   I just wanna belong!

Well lets make it a bit more relevant then. His ticket was 'stolen', and now you are expected to hand over the whole amount.

I'm not blaming the ref for making a mistake, that's ok and I think he is normally a fine ref, I'm pissed that his hands are tied because he blew his whistle. This rule needs to be changed/altered in some way.

Why the whole thing? What happened to my ticket and the fact that we both won? You may not believe me, but if we were both there and he had proof (in numbers that someone can verify) I would share it.

Well unfortunately, you can't call the game a draw. One person gets the W, one gets the L. So yes, you have to give all the money to him to 'right the wrong' - even though you still won the game (lottery).

So how would you change it in a way that's fair to both teams, still protects the quarterback, and doesn't allow for "accidental" tampering by a ref?  There's the rub.

The real controversy is going to come when SD misses out on a wild card spot by tiebreaker due to this loss.  Now it's not just a game that's "ruined", but an entire postseason.

Maybe if you came up with a better hypothetical situation so I can answer better, but as it is, you somehow put me in a situation where I can share and make it right. My answer is not flawed, it's the question.  :)

If you make dead ball plays review-able, it opens up a HUGE can of worms, as has already been stated here. At that point, the refs whistle becomes meaningless. Players will truck on, blindside players, annihilate quarterbacks and kickers, etc.

Noone is arguing that this situation doesn't suck (except for Denver fans). It most definitely sucks. Ideally, SD would have shut down the candy plays that Shanahan thrown them, and made things right. They didn't.

No good, that doesn't protect the quarterback.  He now needs to dive for any ball that may or may not have his arm in a throwing motion, because if it's reviewed and ruled a fumble, then that's a lost posession.  Also, the refs will have to wait for the ball to go dead before blowing the whistle, because that will affect how the other player go after a downed ball.  For example, if the whistle wasn't blown (i.e. the appropriate call), then maybe the scramble for the ball turns out differently because player X doesn't stop when he hears the whistle.

It's tough, but having teams who lost the game end up winning the game and teams who won, lose,  is not the answer. This is a major flaw that compromises the game. This sort of thing cannot happen again.

Oh it can, and it most definitely will. It's the nature of the game. It's why we take the time to watch the game. The NFL is not a life or death matter. It is ENTERTAINMENT. On the entertainment scale, that game was HUGE. People will be talking about it all season. In the grand scheme of things, it is no big deal.

There are blown calls in every game, in every sport.  Sometimes those calls cost teams the game.  It happens.  Life will go on.  The game is no more compromised than it was in the days before instant replay.

Again I ask, how would you alter the rules to make it "fair"?  It's no use complaining about something if you don't at least have an inkling of how to make it better.

If no one feeds the trolls, we're just going to keep eating your goats.

The ref needs to have some way out of his bad call in some rare situations.

I understand that guys heard the whistle blow and didn't go after the ball, but if we can be honest, the Chargers were the only ones there and would have came up with the ball 99 times out of 100. I think we are better off assuming that much and making it so than just leaving a totally screwed play stand.

Just read on espn that the league will consider debating a rule change based on this play in the off-season. Much like the 'down by contact' rule. I think it is a bad call on their part to debate a rule on 'inadvertent whistles' for reasons already stated here. Its a freak play, and the whistle should stay the way it is. The only thing the league needs to do is make sure refs understand to hold off blowing their whistle on plays like that. Let the situation play itself out and then make a ruling.

The refs are already supposed to hold their whistle until they're absolutely sure.  That is the rule.  Hochuli just effed up.  He's human.

As a former player I Can tell you right now that if they start putting grey areas into when player should stop they will err on the side of not stopping.  We're trained from the earliest levels to play 100% until the whistle.  Situations where some guys are letting up and others are still going full speed are very dangerous.  You'll end up with a ton of hits like when Warren Sapp put Chad Clifton out for a year.

I agree that when the ref blows the whistle that they should stop playing, but how many times do you see when the whistle blew in almost any case where the ball could have been turned over that the players closest to the ball always grab the ball just in case to make sure. That does not mean you have to go ahead and destroy a guy and get a hard hit in, but get the ball in the event it might want to be reviewed.

As soon as it becomes possible it won't be one guy picking up the ball.  It will be one guy picking up the ball and getting his head knocked off by four others.  What you're saying isn't possible.  The only reason that guy gets away with it now is because everyone knows it doesn't matter.

Yeah, but you also have to get the game right, because of this rule:

Quote
You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.

We can leave this up to a vote of the remaining contestants, though.  If they say it's cool I'm fine with that.  It's everybody's game, not mine.   :)

I did.  If that's not enough slack I don't know what will be.

ok fair is fair, I cant pick a game with New York Giants, St Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals, OR Miami Dolphins this week.

Chicago Over Tampa Bay

I like that solution.  Works for me.  Not being able to pick against Miami or St Louis is pretty harsh.   :laugh2:

That isn't such a bad pick. Washington closed out that game last week incredibly strong. They definitely have it in them to win that game if they play well.

This is a tough week - a lot of mediocre teams playing each other.  Many of the underdogs are at home which makes it even tougher to pick against them.

Oh, my "Malenko pick of the week" would have to be the Dallas Mavericks over the LA Dodgers.   ;D

I was screwed, up by 7 with like a min to go and they lose in OT

I should have stuck with my original idea of picking who ever MarkRVP picked (kidding!)
I was gonna switch when I heard Hester wasn't playing, but I had the bills in the work game so I split em thinking I'd be alive in at least 1 pool, and I am, just not this one, LOL

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
EDIT: I'd also like to thank everyone for their good sportsmanship in letting me keep going from last week.

It is boring that way. That is why I picked the Dolphins to beat the pats last year when I was one of the last ones in. This year I have had much more fun, and am appearing much more football savvy than I really am!  ;)

We should make it more fun. You have to pick 4 games, and you have to be right in 3 of them.

Technically I won since I was the only person with balls making picks!  ;D

It's all in fun! Good luck guys.

Week 6: Redskins over Rams

And I got picked on for my pick last week.  ::)

I am trying to decide if I want to just end it and pick the Rams....I don't think I can. I am too competitive.  >:D

Not by me.  Shoot, every single one of my picks has been this weak this year.

Wanna change it up to make it interesting?  We each pick two games this week, must pick both correctly.  If we advance, then we pick three games next week, and so on until one of us misses a game.  We would still have to hold to the "no picking a team in two consecutive weeks" rule until it becomes impossible.  I'm up for it if you are.

Well, that sounds fun but I think I will just pick the Rams over the Redskins. I think the Rams are due. Besides, I don't think Chad wants to do MORE work. :)

This way, it will end this week. And you will be the first 2 time winner. (Maybe ;))

It's not a big deal to keep track, 2 guys picking 4 games is still easier than 8 guys picking 1.

So, I won the first time because I was the only person to submit a pick that week, and if I win this time it'll be because sharidan inspired JKMAN to pick the most unlikely upset.  Well, those will make two satisfying, fulfilling victories...   :-\

You're right. That is not fair to you. I would like to change my pick to:

Giants over the Browns

We will fight to the death like men! (With boring easy picks until someone gets upset. :) )

Avoiding the obvious Pittsburgh over Cincinnati (seeing where the "obvious" pick got me last week).  Let's go with.

Miami over Baltimore

Which is how I got my first win.  I had a habit of making my picks on Monday or Tuesday, and the thread would drop down, sometimes off the first page by Friday.  Eventually my opponents forgot to make picks and I won by default.

Thank you! We both picked good teams last week and it didn't do any good. The Queens almost came back but our coach sucks and they will never be a good team so I was fairly safe.

I can't believe I went from being out in the first week to winning the whole thing. Thanks for running it Chad. It was fun. (Shoulda stuck with your first pick in week one. :P )

It's only week 8 coming up.  We probably have enough time for another one if people want to do it.
