Ca the I-PAC be connected to a Playstation2??
« on: March 12, 2002, 04:49:14 pm »
Hi All,

I'm getting quite a few potential customers asking whether the I-PAC can connect as a keyboard device to the USB port of a Playstation2.

I have asked Andy Warne and he has advised it can't be done, however I think he may be backing out of this issue for liability reasons (can't say I'd blame him!!)

Logic suggests it should be possible, after all USB does stand for UNIVERSAL Serial Bus, right?

Has anyone tried this yet? If so I'd be keen to know the results.

The Ipac requires that special software be installed on your PC for it to work, so that's a negative... But you can hack PSX pads and get USB converters for them to work on the PC :)

Umm excuse me for beign a jerk but that's the stupidest idea I've ever heard of.  So your taking an object that emulates a keyboard, so you can jimmy rig arcade parts onto a pc.  This device goes to great means to show itself as a keyboard in a windows and even non-windows environment.  So now what you wanna do is take this device, which is soley designed to work on the pc and not only make it work on a ps2 but make the ps2 think it's not a keyboard? (Or make it think it's some goofy proprietary ps2 usb keyboard.)  It's a real simple solution, you take a cheap ps2 controller, smash it with a hammer and solder all the button/stick leads to the circuit board.

Not being mean, just stating the obvious.

No, I don't think it's stupid, it sounds like what his customers want is a controller that works on PSX and the PC with plug and play.

Unfortunately, using the Ipac isnt going to be a solution. Another reason it won't work is because you'd be using a keyboard to play the PS2 games, and there are like, 1, that can be controlled like that.

Also, you have to remember that people who don't frequent this board may know little, or next to nothing about control building, or how this all works. I get emails all the time from people asking questions that to me are ludicrous, but I understand that it's just because they are inexperienced, not because they are stupid. I just try to imagine why someone would ask a particular question.

One really weird question I got was how a guy could take a dreamcast controller and use it to control his 4x4 Truck (A real one, not a toy). I kind of just left that one alone. :P

Well, I don't have the USB version of the IPAC or I'd test it.  I don't even have a usb keyboard.

One would have to try it.  I think it will work.  I don;t know if the keyboard in the linux kit is a special keyboard or not.

Nevermind, it WILL work.

no, it;s the ozstick.  It's a premade arcade stick using ipac.  So he is saying his customers ask if it will work on the ps2 also.

That;s a good point.  The reason PS2 accepts usb mouse and keyb is for games like unreal, redfaction, starcraft (on ps2?).  It would have use, but little since it doesn;t have dual analog.

I plan to build a MAME/Playstation 2 cabinet. I want the Arcade style
controls to be switchable from the PC to the PS2. Will the following
scenario work.

1. Hack the Playstation controlers with Happ arcade controls, and leave the
Original Playstation plugs on them.

2. Connect the PS - PC USB converters to the USB ports on my PC for use
with MAME.

3. Plug the Playstations original plugs into the PS - PC USB converters
when playing MAME games on the PC, or connect them (the original plugs)
directly to the Playstation 2's controller ports for use with PS2 games.

It seems logically correct, but being a newbie I want to get a veterans
opinion before spending all the cash.
