Quick question about Cocktail games...

Hey all,
  Well I know this is a sorta dumb question, but because of a future project I was going to ask how does a cocktail cabinet deal with the players being on opposite sides of the monitor?  Does it flip upside-down when it's the next players turn? or does it stay upside to player 2 all the time?
   The project I was thinkin about doing is my Senior Project for Bothell High School (next year), and making a cocktail mame cabinet.  Damn it would rule cause instead of having to explain something like how atomic bombs work or somethin, I could write my essays on video games, the reasons for their makings, who is responsible, what kind of cabinets there are out there, etc.  Plus all those guys that live in WA could come down when we have the big Senior Fair thing when we show off what we've done, and check out my cab.

It flips upside down when its the next players turn. But in some games like Dig Dug, In order for them to run in cocktail mode there is a dip-switch setting that goes from upright to cocktail. Keep in mind its abit tough to build a cocktail mame cabinet due to space constraints.

yeah, I was thinkin of using Dhansen's method, and making the cocktal cabinet itself larger than the ones I've seen.  Large enough that you can sit in a normal chair and play.  Thanx for the info though, now it makes sense how that works with two players.  I was also thinking of taking the kinda cheap technique of this one guy.... forgot his name though... but he made one that he started with 2 snes controller joysticks, but changed em to this kailler setup with a hacked blue raider pro, and he had the 2 controls in the front of the cocktail, instead of on each side, so it wasn't like a true cocktail or anything, it was just damn cool.

I beg to differ on that one.  Although I did have to completely disassemble a PC to make it fit in my homemade cocktail cabinet, I was able to keep the monitor in its case.

Let's just say it's more challenging to build a cocktail cabinet. I have less than one-quarter of an inch wiggle room with my monitor installed in my cocktail cab.

Awesome, thanx for the site link.  Yeah, I'm thinkin that's what I might do for my cocktail project, cause if I do the traditional way, fighting games would kind of be impossible, and the cabinet would only be used for very old school games... hmmm.. decisions, decisions, well I'll see how my current mame machine turns out, then I'll decide, I still got like 6 monthes of planning ^_^

You might want to consider a side by side design.  Check out this link http://www.hwcn.org/~ac399/joustct.htm to a restored JOUST cocktail.  I can't think of any MAME cab examples.  You would probably want larger control panels to accomodate enough buttons for fighting games.

Wow, I didn't know there were side by side cocktail cabinets made.  MAMEGtx's home made cab is a simular concept.
