Steel sheet for CP, thickness question.
« on: August 17, 2008, 05:00:40 pm »
I have a metal CP (Dynamo hinged job) and my current plan is to cut out the top and lay a new piece of metal with new button holes for Seimitsu screw ins and welded on bolts to mount Sanwa sticks . Bondo will be applied to the edges to make it look seemless.

My question is how thick of a metal sheet should I look for? I'd like to be able to cut it with bi-metal hole saws easily as possible yet thick enough to not have much flex (will leave as much as the old metal as possible for stability). I see sheets for sale on websites sold by gauge and by thickness, any suggestions? I'd rather order something online so if you know a good website that'd be great too.

Going to try some 11 gauge to start out with. Still would like to hear suggestions if you have them, thanks.

So 11 is proably too thick in hindsight, I'd say 14 would have been a better choice.

Once upon a time, I had a replacement CP built for my cab, and went with 14ga.  It was plenty thick.
