Well, repainting it was a long process for me...
It had been repainted before so I decided to start by disassembling it stripping it. I used some of that spray on paint remover found at auto stores. I think it was called Tal-Strip. That stuff works really well, just let it sit awhile. A little time with a steel brush got the tough areas.
I primed it all with flat black sandable primer. I originally planned to paint it all with that but I couldn't get a uniform finish.
I used some automotive semi-gloss on the raised bezels and return flappers. This turned out surprisingly well (I usually don't have much luck getting semi-gloss or gloss black to look good at all). I decided to leave well enough alone and leave the parts as they were.
Since the flat black didn't work out on the large parts, I tried flat black sandable primer a few times with no luck on consistency.
Finally, I tried some wrinkle paint from the auto store. It wasn't rustoleum but I'm sure that brand is probably even better. It took me several tries to get it to turn out. Then I reassembled it and added the locks and it literally looks like new. Only thing that shows any wear at all is the red plastics, if you look very closely.
Here's what I found with the wrinkle paint, after a half dozen coats that didn't work:
Paint the part very heavily. I mean REALLY heavily. Then lay the part flat so there are no runs. Then set it outside in the direct sunlight. Within an hour you should have plenty of wrinkle. I tried using a hair dryer like they suggest on the can, but it never worked for me. The only thing that worked was really heavy paint and direct, hot sunlight.
Once I figured out that trick, I fell in love with the finish. I'm going to use it on all sorts of things.
Be sure to let the wrinkle paint dry for SEVERAL days, maybe even a week. It isn't very durable during that time, I guess it takes a long time to cure fully since I put it on so thick. But once it is fully cured, it is quite durable, at least as durable as regular paint. I'm glad I decided to try that stuff!
