Mounting Glass/Plexi
« on: July 07, 2008, 10:52:04 am »
I am building a UAII cab from plans using MDF and am up to the point where I need to build a mount for the monitor. To work out the height I first need to make a bezel, before doing that I need to work out how to mount the glass/plexi I'll be attaching the bezel to. However I am stumped on how to mount the glass/plexi to facilitate removal from the front  :dunno

If somebody can comment on the ideas I have below, or suggest various ways to mount the glass/plexi I would be most thankful.

1. Velcro - I could attach velcro to the back of the bezel (cardboard at this stage) which is attached to the back of the glass. However, I am assuming that the bezel would come off the back of the glass/plexi (given I want the velcro to be pretty strong) and wouldn't you see the glue through the glass used to attach the bezel to the glass/plexi?
2. Slotted/Pressure - I had thought of designing some sort of clamping system that you could apply pressure on one side forcing the glass up against a frame, however this would mean the glass/plexi would have to be mounted from the rear (meaning the monitor would have to be removed in order to access it - but how many times do you need to remove the glass/plexi for cleaning?)

Also I am planning on fitting a 21" flat screen monitor for my display, however it does leave me with a gap of ~115mm (4.6") either side. I can buy a second hand 68cm TV that will reduce it down to ~80mm (3.2") for ~$100. On viewing many, many cab photos one of my biggest turn offs is the "large bezel housing the small monitor". Does anyone have a cab photo showing one having a similar sizing (115mm gap, or 4.6" gap)?

Cheers.

EDIT: BTW - if this is in the wrong forum could the admins please move it (wasn't sure if to post under General, Woodworking, Projects)

I recently built a UAII from the kit.  To mount the plexi, you need to first install 4 wooden strips on the inside of the cab.  There are 2 vertical strips and 2 horizontal strips.  They are like 1" wide and they go the length of the inside of the cab where the monitor will go.  They basically make a square along the inside of the cab.  The plexi simply screws into the strips.  In my case, the plexi is so tight, that I did not even need to screw it in.  For the bezel, I simply used Rustoleum satin black spraypaint on the plexi.  I taped the entire screen area with masking tape (layered) and sprayed the plexi on the outer ends.  I used two coats on the plexi and once it was dry I removed the masking tape and touched up anything I missed.  Then I turned the plexi around so that the painted side was on the inside of the cab and slid it into the monitor area until it rested on the 4 strips.  It looks gorgeous :)

Surely.  I didn't want to reduce the image size, so I linked to my Photobucket.
