Mouse is faster than lcd topgun's cursor?
« on: April 09, 2008, 10:53:54 pm »
Now i have tried both the EMS LCD Topgun and Smog's Guncon2PC Driver, and STILL i have the same problem where the mouse is faster than the topgun moves, how do I fix this? This is a major problem when trying to use Mame when I can't see the cursor on screen. Specifically in Zombie Raid because I haven't been able to test any other lightgun games yet, (mainly because my MAME DVDS haven't arrived yet...)

the guns realtime tracking will always be slower than a mouse.  However, when you press the
trigger, it instantly updates.

Using the guns for 'Analog Positional' gun games is not exactly what these were intended or
designed for.

turn the mouse sensitivity down in windows perhaps.

control panel / printers and othr hardware / mouse

So then this is only going to be a problem for "certain" games, like for example Zombie Raid as I mentioned, because no matter how i calibrate it, the gun is ALWAYS inaccurate so I cannot tell where I'm hitting.

Well, I partly misunderstood something you said  I think.

Northern is correct in that you want to disable mouse acceleration,  and maybe even reduce
sensitivity in windows.

If anything,  one would move the gun and the cursor would lag behind it because the
guns realtime tracking will not be as fast.    If the cursor is moving further, then the acceleration
is the cause.

Yet, no matter how close you get.. it will never be perfect because the hardware is not
designed the same way as the original guns.

Zombie Raid used Positional Guns.  Which are basically just Analog Joysticks.  In fact,  you should be
able to control the game even better when using them instead.  T2 was also such a game.

Area 51 however, is a true lightgun game.   It doest track in realtime.  Only when the trigger is pressed.

There are hybrids..  which use the Topguns same technology.   Led infered sensors.   However, these
also are not realtime tracking as far as I know.

Realtime tracking with near perfect accuracy is possible..  but it would require some extra horsepower with
dedicated processors  and or a dedicated PC card  ..I think.

ok thx 4 that, now just ONE more question (then I will leave my questions to myself for awhile...). How do you properly calibrate Zombie Raid or ANY lightgun game properly in MAMEUI32, specifically in the newest version v.124a? I have read several forums on this and I thought I calibrated the gun correctly
(
X Analog = Lightgun (Didn't touch, because I didn't see what to do)
X Dec = Lightgun X-
X Inc = Lightgun X+
Y Analog = Lightgun (Also didn't touch, because of what I said for X Analog)
Y Dec = Lightgun Y+ (Apparently Y is inverted when moving the cursor?)
Y Inc = Lightgun Y-
)

The result of this setup is that everytime the game starts, the cursor (from mame) in zombie raid/ and the one ingame when starting both start in the center of the screen then glide in on one of the corners when the gun is not moving, but if I move the gun at all the cursor will "respawn" back in the center and repeat the process of moving in the corner of the screen, what am I doing wrong in the calibration?

You get tracking lag on real arcade machines as well........

HOTD4
Ghost Squad
Time Crisis 4

all of them show some tracking lag when you're calibrating them. It's normal.

Your mapping is incorrect:

X Dec = Lightgun X-
X Inc = Lightgun X+
Y Dec = Lightgun Y+ (Apparently Y is inverted when moving the cursor?)
Y Inc = Lightgun Y-

Do not map analog controls to mame's digital-2-analog input ports.  Basically, take the lightgun out from these.  (These are for digital inputs such as keyboard to fake being analog.  If you map analog inputs, mame converts it to two value digital, then increases or decreases the analog signal sent the game according to the digital info.)

IOW, never map inputs from analog devices (mouse, analog joystick, steering wheel, lightgun, etc) to mame's "...Inc" or "...Dec" ports.

Quote
X Analog = Lightgun (Didn't touch, because I didn't see what to do)
Y Analog = Lightgun (Also didn't touch, because of what I said for X Analog)

These are all you need and want for analog controls on analog inputs.

Not sure if that will help your calibrating, but fixing the Inc/Dec will stop the walking cursor.

Sry, I rechecked my settings in the General Settings of MAMEUI32 and found that my settings were actually:

lightgun X Analog = Mouse 1 X or lightgun 1 X
lightgun X Dec = lightgun 1 X-
lightgun X Inc = lightgun 1 X+
lightgun Y Analog = Mouse 1 Y or lightgun 1 Y
lightgun Y Dec = lightgun 1 Y-
lightgun Y Inc = lightgun 1 Y+

So I attempted to do what the above post stated about remapping Analog X/Y to prevent my problem. However, I couldn't change the value so I pressed "Esc" and that made each Analog "None," which I thought would fix the axis, but now it glides across an area everytime the lightgun moves in an area instead of just "following" the cursor.
And I also saw that the above post stated I did not configure the setup correctly, so how do I fix both the analog and configuration problems? Or simply could someone post an ini/cfg that has the correct configuration, please?

I just re-read your post U_RebelScum and I guess what I just said must have not made sense. So all I have to do is just leave the General Settings alone and calibrate the game some other way? Because I tried service mode and that did not help at all, so is Zombie Raid just one game that has crappy calibration?

i have two top guns and i cant even get them to shoot or even move curser in my mame cabinet the calibration sucked but i fixed that by shooting one inch off screen in the corners were it was an inch off in the screen. That seem to work but i cant get it to work at all in mame it would help if someone could screen shot their config for these guns on mame32
                           please help
