The "I Just Took On 16 Countertops" Project!
« on: October 03, 2010, 12:53:32 pm »
Well, it all started here: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=151557

It said that he had 6 of touchscreen countertops (Megatouch 5's), all imports that just needed to be switched to 120v. It also said he had a Touchmaster(didn't state condition), and 2 JVL's a Concorde with a bad CD Drive, and a Conquest with bad monitor. That would total to 9 at $25, but deals never go as planned….

I went to go look at the 9 touchscreen games and see what I'd like to get. I get there and he counts them off and he has 16 games plus a parts machine he'd like to get rid of in one big lot. The price was lowered even cheaper, and an hour later my van was squatting the worst I'd ever seen.

Now, I have 16 countertop games and a parts machine to go through and try and sell most of. I plan to keep one or maybe 2, and I know that I have 2 potential buyers (friends) that have asked about these before. I plan to use this thread as a log of my progress.

[INSERT PICTURE OF STACKS OF COUNTERTOPS HERE]

1) Labeled Megatouch 5; As stated earlier, these were imports and I was told I needed to jumper something in order to get the Megatouch 5's working. I open this one up and I see the monitor set to 220v so I move the jumper and plug it in. I get a lit monitor that seems to scroll white bars (I'll get picture later), putting to the side for now

2) Midway Touchmaster 7000; As always with moving equipment I open this and check for anything loose, especially in an as-is purchase where I didn't even plug any in. Nothing looks loose so I go ahead and plug it in. Monitor lit, game boots and  the touchscreen works! I could sell this one today!

3) JVL Concorde 2; Started out the same as above, nothing loose, looks complete. I plug it in and it starts to boot. In the middle of boot, it fails with a fault code. I turn it off and back on, it gets to a similar point and fails in boot with a the same error code. I checked the manual and the code appears to be a memory error which is fixed with a factory reset. I'll have to check it out soon.

4) Megatouch XL Gold; I plug this one in and I hear the high voltage in the monitor but nothing shows up. I walked away for a minute or two, came back and it was booted, but the monitor was pathetically dim. Touchscreen works. I had to turn the game off to get the monitor adjust board that was laying in the bottom. I cranked the brightness and contrast all the way up and I got a brighter picture that was readable, but still really dim. When I went to go back and turn it on it was locking up at different read errors. Needs a CD-Drive before I can do anything with monitor. I'm going to try and crank the flyback up some and see what I can get.

5) Megatouch XL Diamond 2?; Opened up the back to find a missing PSU for the motherboard. The monitor neck glows. When I rip open the Megatouch XL Gold to replace the CD-Drive, I will borrow the power supply and test this one in more depth, and hopefully confirm the game. Unsure where priority is on this one until I put a PSU in it.

6) Megatouch XL Platinum; Got this one fired up one the first try! Reading the CD was going very slow and I turned it off and back on and it boots 1 more time out of 5 tries. Needs a new CD-Drive, but I like the games in this one and will probably keep it. Monitor is very bright, and touchscreen is really sensitive, but it is also dirty as can be.

7) Megatouch 5; Forgot how old the Megatouch 5's were! The touchscreen wasn't very sensitive but it has 10 layers of dirt on it too. Clean this up and sell it unless I need parts to make a newer one work.

8) Megatouch 5; This did the same thing as the first one did, no clue what it causing the issue.

9) Megatouch 5; Booted right up after plugging in both ends of the power cord ;) the only problem is the touchscreen doesn't work. Will need to look into it and see if it's the controller or the touchscreen itself.

10) Megatouch 5; This did the same thing as the first one did, no clue what it causing the issue.

11) Megatouch 5; Boots, pretty clean (was in shrink wrap), touchscreen works really good

12) Megatouch 5; The touchscreen controller is missing, the monitor neck glows but the game doesn't boot. May be looking for the touchscreen controller before booting but unsure.

13) Megatouch 5; This did the same thing as the first one did, no clue what it causing the issue.

14) Megatouch 5; The monitor has no high voltage, the touchscreen is also falling off. The board works blind, along with the touchscreen.

15) Megatouch 5; This did the same thing as the first one did, no clue what it causing the issue.

16) JVL Conquest; The monitor was labeled bad, and all I got was a few seconds of  high power and then it cuts out. The rest of the game appears to function (including the touchscreen)

17) PARTS; I have no clue what is going on with this one. Nothing happens when it is powered except the monitor neck glows. It was thrown in for, well parts!

So this is my findings so far, I plan to try and get CD-Drive issues taken care of first, then start to troubleshoot the other issues in order of simplicity. I feel like an idiot for buying 16 countertops but again, the right price is the right price.

I'm getting pictures today of what I got. I'll keep you posted of my progress.

Well I forgot to grab my camera when I left so pictures come later tonight...

I got to #3, the one that was giving me fault code 213. I did the factory reset and it booted! The problem now is that it says it is unregistered. I can continue and it will work on free play so i tested the touchscreen at least. It really needs calibration but it now is verified working. I just have to call JVL between 9-5 M-F, which can't happen unless I bring home the countertop. This countertop is being put off until I can find time to call them during business hours to get it registered.

P.S. If anyone is looking for a countertop game let me know through pm. As I get these up and running and cleaned up I'm going to sell off most of these.

You competing with smalltownguy?

I have a spare touchscreen and controller if you want it.  (have the monitor and boards too, but it went dark, same as the ones you have)
Just pay shipping or pick it up if you're close (central pa).

I went to lcd screens on my two machines.  Any old ELO touchscreen with a serial connector should work with the XL models.
The one in my XL case is a 15" from a photo kiosk and it almost fits  ;D .  It's shoehorned in there pretty tight.
I had to shim out the side panels to make enough room and the coin section is wedged in so tight it isn't removable.
Also took some careful cutting and sanding of the bezelm but it's in there and looks beautiful & more responsive.
My other uses a little 12" stand-alone screen with it's own base (so it wouldn't take up much room on the bar).

I'm running late for something now, but I can get you the part #'s for the LCD's later if you want.

I'm not trying to directly compete with smalltownguy, I liked his thread layout and I was thrown into the situation (well lets face it, I bought my way in, besides I've passed the 50 game mark).

PM Sent about the touchscreen stuff.

I'll have to check about the spot the difference games, I believe that the XL's do indeed have that but I'll have to check for sure (will have to wait until after saturday, prepping games for Timonium auction right now is killing me). As for the price, I'll be reasonable but I'm not looking to hand out deals.

Just an FYI for anyone who might be interested;  ELO LCD touchscreens with serial connectors work with the Megatouch XL boards.
So you can build a housing for the boards and run the vga and serial cable to a touchscreen monitor on top the bar.
Also, you can build your own housing: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=90631.0
A 15" LCD can be shoe-horned into the original housing, but it ain't easy (see my post above).

Touchmaster 8000 works pretty good in MAME.  The megatouch games have glitches, such as missing numbers on cards. They are pretty old versions anyway.
I've always kinda thought the glitches were left there on purpose to protect mame devs from the wrath of Merit.
The the process to assign the x and y axis in MAME works the same way as a light gun.

I really really really don't need anymore projects, but I'm tempted to get one of the leftover Megatouch 5 housings when the dust settles and make something cool out of it.
I'm thinking a mini all-in-one.  Touchscreen, trackball, joystick, poker buttons.....must stop....

XL software and newer has photo hunt...and erotic photo hunt.  ;D

Working Megatouch machines just don't sell cheap.  :-\

I paid $275 for my first one (Gold XL).  It was filled with roach crap and the monitor died a month later.
I probably have $150 in the 2nd one, but I didn't buy the whole machine, just a mobo & i/o board (marked as-is), & a new power supply.
Lucked out and got the touch monitor for $60.

There is a seller on fleabay who sells Platinum hard drives that work with any XL key.
That is what I have running on both machines.

I saw a nice Megatouch Ruby (next generation past XL) sell for $350 right after I bought the old roach crap filled one.
You can't smell the item on fleabay.  :'(

They use a standard AT power supply (but of course they'll charge you more for a "megatouch power supply").
They also sell ATX to AT adapters if you have extra PC power supplies laying around.
Not sure how the switch works on those though since the AT supplies just use an on/off switch.
The AT power supply also has the pass-through for the monitor cord.

There is nothing to keep you from reversing the two motherboard power connectors, so pay close attention to which one is on which side. (take a pic)

I've rebuilt a couple of the XL series machines.
I think I've had most problems you can have with them, so ask away if you have any issues.  ;D

I have a couple touch controllers on eBay if you're looking. Also I have a box of hard drives and keys for Megatouch mostly Ion and Force software. Let me know if you're interested and I'll get a list together.

I'm gonna stop by Frys on the way home from work tomorrow and get an AT power supply, thanks for the heads up.  Looks like they have one for $25, w00t!  I'll replace that and see what happens.

Monitor does have neck glow.  I haven't tried hooking up another video source to it to test it.  It is just standard VGA, correct?

Yep,  standard stuff.
I've used a bunch of different monitors for testing & currently use LCD touchscreens on both my machines.

Replaced the power supply, and BAM!  Works great, monitor is clear, and the touchscreen is perfectly calibrated.   :droid :droid :droid

No sound, though.  Not bad for $50 and hour of my time.

Sweet!   There is a volume control pot on the I/O board.  It's a little metal lever attached to two vertically mounted pots.  IIRC, it's in the bottom corner near where the speaker plugs in.  There is also a volume adjustment in the service menu.

I wouldn't be surprised if the speaker is blown though.  Mine was all crackly and had to be replaced.
It's 8ohm, but I don't rember the size off the top of my head.  I have a spare and can post specs when I get home if you like.

How do you get into the service menu?  I've only messed around with JAMMA type games before this.

There are two red buttons behind the pull-out coin box (assuming this is a tabletop model).
One will launch the service menu, the other will launch the calibration screen.

You can also press them both simultaneously while powering up for a "two button reset", but you shouldn't need to do that unless you are switching software.

This is a tabletop model, yes.  Cool, so I'll look for those buttons, too.  I assume they are inside the case?  There is one red square button on the outside next to the AT power switch.

Mine doesn't have that one.  ???
It's an XL6000 that was upgraded to gold (then upgraded to platinum by me).
Not sure how many variations there are being that most were upgraded over the years.

Here are the pinouts on the I/O board for the service & calibration courtesy of Paladin:

I assume they are inside the case?

Remove the coin box and you will see them along with a counter (it's interesting to know how much money the machine made in it's lifetime).
They are meant to be accessed without having to open the back of the case.

Any luck with the sound?  The speaker is 4".  These are similar to what I used and were a tight fit, but they're much better than the original: http://cgi.ebay.com/Pair-New-4-Inch-Full-Range-Speaker-Drivers-NSBs-/260697317937?pt=Speakers_Subwoofers&hash=item3cb2c56231

Be careful that the entire speaker, including the basket isn't wider than 4".
Probably a good idea to stick with shielded ones.

So I adjusted the pot, and the in-game volume adjustment, checked the wiring.  The speaker is bad.
