Any TV that has a SCART input will do. I'm in Holland, and I use TV's to replace original "arcade" monitors in classic cabs. (Check the Centiepede and Galaxians links under my posts) Works OK for me, saves a lot of money, picture is the same as arcade.

You only have to be able to solder some wires to a SCART connector, and of course you need to use either an ArcadeVGA from Ultimarc or run a software solution like Soft-15Khz.

thanks, your cabs look cool. i can hook up a tv to my graphics card with a s-video cable cant i?
what i need to know is what make of tv to use eg does it keep the input channel when you turn it back on basically i need it come back on(on the s-video input) when i turn the socket on and not have to change the channel i'm using a sony trinton 21" crt pc monitor at the mo but its a bit small and it seems hard to find larger pc monitors in the uk that aren't wide screen lcd's

Yes you can, but it won't deliver the best possible picture. RGB (through SCART) will render the best quality picture that is exactly the same as a real "arcade" monitor.
Also, when using the SCART connector it is possible to do all that you want. It will automaticaly switch to monitor input by applying some voltages to certain pins. I can give you the schematics if you need it.

This is all completely brand unrelated. All SCART equipped TV's (and that's about all of them here in Europe) react the same to those signals.

Again, don't forget about at what resolution you want to work. If you want true arcade style picture you need to use an ArcadeVGA or Soft-15kHz and make a cable from the VGA output to the SCART input.

Scart is the way to go, sadly over here in nz its all but disappeared on new tvs with components replacing it. That and 25" tv's are rare as rocking horse crap.

If you can find one that fits width wise, thats 90% of the battle. having the power come back on has happened on all the tv's I have tried it on bar one, and that was solved by glueing the power switch in (it had both the mechanical one, and a momentary one to wake up the tv) - it was from the side of the road so didnt matter.

The input on a scart can be forced by putting voltage into one of the pins. You have to put voltage into the RGB selection pin anyway so its just another wire joining them together.

I'm currently building my cabinet (it's at the painting stage). I'm using a 28 ich Toshiba tv. Like alot of people I had probs with my svideo being black and white. I've got a radeon card with svideo out going to a scart connector with svideo input. I realised that the TV has AV1 & AV2 input, but also if you press the AV2 button on the remote I get AV2 svideo and low and behold colour.
Now all I gotta do is get the TV to switch over to AV2 svideo when I turn it on rather than using the remote. I saw a post somewhere using a half dead 9v battery and a little soldering. If only I could remember where I saw it!!

I've hooked up through Arcade VGA and hacked vga cables to RGB Scart

On Sanyo, Philips and Mitsubishi with no problems.

You need to get your skates on if you want to get a crt tv in the uk as it's getting difficult to get 21" ones as the flat panels are taking over.

Try to get one that doesn't have wide speakers on the side so it will go in  a cab better.

One thing to be careful of:

Make sure you do take the ground from shield of the VGA cable (as shown in the diagram)

One good souce of a VGA cable pre stripped is an old CRT monitor with hard wired cable.

I've seen the Maplin things before, they sound like the same thing, but I have never used them so I can't comment.

It (probably) is the same thing, but you would need an Arcade VGA or be using Sailor Sat's Soft 15KHz.

The disclaimer may be there so no one tries to drive a TV from a 31KHz VGA signal and ruin it.

I am using a Sony Trinitron 25" inch TV I got off Ebay for the princely sum of £8.50. I am currently running off Svideo but I am looking go get a VGA to scart cable made. I have posted a thread asking about the construction in another post but basically I want to know if I can just cut back the shielding on the individual wires that are ground to the VGA socket and eartth the main shield?
